Another bogus rumor, although the free office is a pretty sweet deal if they were looking to clear out some stock... OVERSTOCK that is.

has anyone actually confirmed that apple was forced to switch the MB and MBP over to penryn because of stock shortages. anyone think that maybe it just had more to do with the timeframe and the fact that penryn only has advantages for real labtops whereas the iMac will benefit mightly from the montevina platform?

There's actually a couple articles out there that say that Intel is cutting down and attempting to completely phase out Merom production, in favor of Penryn.

Why not give the imac a little oomph instead of the portables? Apple's selling them left and right, and the desktops are comparitively lagging. Ithink apple should put the swifter, newer chips in the desktops.

The iMac is the number 2 seller since the MB and MBP got updated. The MB is #1

swifter, newer chips... you think calling them that makes penryn better than merom in a desktop? stop dreaming. Penryn is all about reduced power and heat production, and the SSE4 intruction set.

Montevina will have all that, 1066 mhz system bus and DDR3 memory support.

It's looking like we very well may see some refreshed iMacs in the next two weeks... I've been itching for a 24" iMac 2.8 GHz Extreme for quite a while now... if they do much of anything to sweeten up that model, it will be difficult for me to keep from ponying up some money! And I doubt I'll buy any desktop set-up with anything less than 24" from now on (spoiled by my HP 2465 display that my MacBook is currently driving).

My only hesitation on the 24" iMac is uncertainty about whether the display problems that have been reported are now a thing of the past. I know the 20" uses a TN panel which I would never buy, but I think even some of the 24" S-IPS panels were having some problems. Anyone know what the current state is with the 23" screens?

"According to a "product change notification" issued to customers, Intel said it plans to discontinue shipments of the dual-core PC chips after July 27, 2009. In addition, the chipmaker plans to stop shipping some single-core Celeron M processors after Jan. 26, 2009.

The Core 2 Duo Merom chips set to get the ax are the T7600, the T7400, the T7200, the T5600, and the T5500. Another Core 2 Duo chip that would be discontinued at the same time is the low-voltage L7200. Among Celeron processors, Intel has started phasing out the M520 and M530.

Intel plans to stop taking orders for the chips on May 26. The phase-out is part of Intel's routine discontinuance of older products as new ones are introduced, a spokeswoman said Wednesday." - http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206100647

Make of this what you will, but Apple can continue ordering the current chip sets in the iMac and Mac Mini right up until 2 weeks before Montevina drops.

I'm sure Apple wasn't "forced" to upgrade, however Intel is gradually phasing out Merom, so it would make sense for them to upgrade to Penryn whenever they could. Also, them MBPs were rather lagging behind and hadn't been upgraded in a while, so it made sense for Apple to upgrade since they hadn't in a while and due to the phase out of Merom.

it made sense for the laptops to be upgraded, because penryn offers fantastic heat reduction and lower power production.

Exactly.

Penryn's not going to be doing much for the iMacs, which is why I think Apple hasn't updated them yet. There's no need to keep up with PC manufacturers in this regard. But, they will undoubtedly have to at some point, since Merom's not going to be manufactured anymore. But whether Apple is going to wait until June for Montevina/Centrino 2 or just upgrade before then is yet to be seen.

I disagree on the life span of a computer.....

Adding RAM doesn't void the warranty unless you install it wrong or use the wrong type and something happens.

Apple justifies the price of APPLECARE by claiming its far superior to other companies repair/warranty services.

In my actual experience, Apple products are designed to last just a few days longer than 4 years (1 year warranty + 3 years of apple care). That way, Apple makes the most $ off of your purchase and at the end of 4 years, you can make expensive repairs or buy a new computer. Don't get me wrong though, PC's aren't any better, since most come with 3 year warranties, they're aimed at dying 3 years + 1 day.

My G4 1.25 Duelie lasted 5 years and was running perfectly! I needed more speed and traded it in for a 24" Alum iMac. Otherwise, I would have kept the G4. The G4s fans were noisier than hell compared to the iMac however!

Freebies with iMac

John Lewis are offering a free copy of Mac Office and PC World are offering a free tv tuner with iMacs bought before 31st March.

IMO a sure sign that they are trying to clear out old stock before the much anticipated revamped model makes an appearance.

I'm not sure about that.

I dunno about other retailers, but I always see MacMall offering free Parallels and printers whenever you buy anything, and that's even with the new models, not just the old ones.

Rather than lowering the price directly, Apple may be offering discounts to retailers that offer these deals. These deals may actually signal a direct discount coming from the Apple Store.

i'm praying for a nvidia 8600 or even better an 8800 for the iMac. Please God, please!!!

I got an 512MB 8600 GT, and let me tell you - It would be a step backwards from 2600. Strangely enough these cards are very even.

I am not even sure if an 8800 Would be worth it at this point. DirectX is a complete mess. DX10.1 features wont be compatible with DX10.0 cards. It's pretty freaking retarded how Microsoft messed this crap up.

It's so bad actually, that John Carmack(creator of Wolfenstein, Quake and Doom) and his team at id software, are making their next game based in OpenGL.
Im not screaming the end of PC gaming, but, we might wanna wait to see the marked develop further.

An 8800 GT seems to be all the rage currently. Apparently almost as powerful as an 8800 GTX, but much quieter and much cooler.

Hi,

I'm in the process of waiting like everyone else for a new iMac. I was planning on getting the 20" as the 24" one will be a touch large on my desk but after reading your comment I'd like to know why you wouldn't buy the 20" version? I've tried both in the store and while the 24" is nicer, I can't say I noticed a huge difference. Am I missing something. It's not a loaded question, I'm new to MAC's and want to make sure I make the best purchasing decision I can with all the information available.

Thanks,

L

Could today be the day? the UK store has iMacs shipping in 2 days at the moment not the usual 24 hours... :D

Fingers crossed!

New here, first post, been reading for a few weeks.

I thought maybe someone metioned the process here in the states if they DID do an update? Can anyone tell me what that is? I thought I read somthing about the store coming offline for a few minutes at some predetermined time?

Hey :)

Apple usually take the online store down while updating a product line. Sometimes for an hour or more, to tease us. Tuesday is frequently the day that Apple choose to update... But then you can never really tell.

Hmm quite qorried now

It could happen... The Top Spec iMac always says 5 days shipping. I don't think they keep many set up like that in stock.

All the other iMacs are now saying 24 hours again :( It must have been Easter that delayed the shipping on them.

hope so, im itching to get me glands on this new baby,
ive got a lot of video editing to do, so i hope it arrives soon,
the only real upgrade im worried they may do is the video card, as it is a bit poop in my opinion and that in turn was the only thing holding me back buying in the first place!

I'm still holding out for the update... who knows when it'll turn up though!

It looks like all of the promotions regarding the iMac are ending by Friday of this week, which means we could see something on April 1 - Apple's birthday.

I'm still holding out for the update... who knows when it'll turn up though!
