No one cares about the processors. Most people that are waiting for the upgrade are in it for the graphics card. I could understand that the new processors would help the portable community but in terms of stationary computers, the processors will have minimal gain and would hardly be noticeable to the untrained eye.

Please apple, just upgrade with 8800XT 512mb plz. /end rant

This makes a lot of sense to me. I was in the Apple Store today, and it was very hard not to purchase a 24" iMac. I'll be there tomorrow helping a friend out, and I'm going to have to leave my wallet in the car.

Any chance the better graphics card iMac will have a non-glossy screen ;)

Penryn might not be a big step, but I think Monetvina will be. DDR3 ram!!!!

It cracks me up reading everyone's personal handicap on whether Apple will do x or y. It's like bond traders handicapping the Fed's next move.

I also agree... I have a white, 2.13 Core 2 Duo iMac with the Nvidia 7600 (128 mb). It has worked perfectly well for me, but underpowered for many 3D intensive games. Hopefully Apple surprises everyone and decides to upgrade the iMac GPU with an Nvidia 8800 XT I'm upgrading.

I just read that Intel is coming out with its first QUAD CORE mobile CPU's based on the montevina platform later this year. I'm pretty sure Apple will offer those on the macbook pro first, but I can dream, cant I?

Imagine if you will an iMac with a quad core CPU based on the Montevina platform (1066 MHZ front side bus!), with DDR3 memory AND a 8800 XT or (9000 series) Nvidia GPU with 512 mb of RAM. That is one monster of a machine that can handle pretty much ANY game out there.

Go to sleep dude! All these worries. Just be happy that apple makes computers!

there's a lot of things lacking in your arguement. first of all, the iMac is based off of portable components, unlike other desktops. Secondly, penryn doesn't offer much gain, but montevina with DDR3 support and a 1060 front side bus, will offer huge performance improvements in all aspects.

Yep. I'm sure Apple realizes that and they made a deal with Intel so they will continue making Merom processors for Apple until Montevina is released. Then a week after Montevina is released, Apple's gonna release the new iMacs at WWDC.

I'm just going to jump into this discussion by reading what's on this page...

... but what's with the 8800XT? Are you guys talking about the 8800M (GTS/GTX)? I've never heard of an 8800XT.

Also, why would Apple put an 8800XT/GTX/GTS in the iMac, when the flagship Mac Pro only has an 8800GT? Unless they'll be upgrading that as well?

The timeframe certainly makes sense and is exactly what I'm hoping for.

that would be a dream come true.

The thing is that I personally dont want a Mac Pro. No! I want an Imac, but I want it to be powerful beyond recognition... or at least have the option to be! I think Apple should let customers be able to customize their computers more. Some like Glossy, some like Matte. Some like expenssive graphics card, some don't. Some like big harddrives some don't.

Apple updated on a monday, with the airport express. what happened? tuesday's no longer trendy?

I, personally, am hoping that that was just a fluke and that they're going to update iMacs tomorrow... something tells me that they won't, but I'm hopeful. I've been holding out for the past 3 weeks on buying an iMac in the hopes that they would upgrade the graphics card, but if they don't update tomorrow, I'm still gonna buy one.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed! ;)

It's the same procedure here...

I am still hoping that the iMac update will arrive today!

so, who wants to start speculating that if Apple doesn't update the iMacs by march 25th, they won't bother until Montevina in June.

Costwise, a June refresh would make more sense as that is around the time that Intel will be releasing the updated Montevina chipset. Penryn will be regarded as a minor upgrade while Montevina will be considered a major upgrade. The first Montevina iMacs will use Penruyn CPU's of course. The good news is that Intel will be releasing the Nehalem processors in late 2008, and according to what I have read that is a huge release. If history has taught us anything, its that Apple will ship macbook pro's first with the new chip, while those of us waiting for a an iMac refresh will probably have to wait a couple months more.

In any case March 25th is the last tuesday i can wait for. I will place my order in the evening hours of that day at the latest.

--- Still hoping for an iMac update till 25th ---

Nehalem

Sorry to shift gears but has anyone read Intel's official Nehalem info? Sounds quite impressive and consumer versions of this platform will probably be available this time next year. Sounds like the next quantam leap in computer performance. Getting rid of the FSB bottleneck will probably result in some blazing speeds.

reports say 20 - 30% performance inc. over similar current penryn chips

If Appleinsider is correct, it might be April 1. It reported that a bunch of international retailers are trying to clear inventory. In particular, it noted one UK retailer had a special deal that ends March 29. The next Tuesday after March 29 is April 1. My guess is April 1 for a small refresh (Penryn + a minor gfx bump). Montevina in August.

I gave in...

So I gave in and just returned home with my brand new 24" iMac w/the 2.4 Ghz processor :D. I've been hemming and hawwing for a month now about which computer to buy (got a gift cert. as a college graduation present from my parents) and I couldn't pass up the chance to spend my 5 day weekend with a new Mac.

Crossing my fingers they don't update next week!

The article says:

"In particular, John Lewis is offering current generation iMacs with a free copy of Microsoft Office Student and Home Edition until March 29th. However, the upscale UK-based department store lists two of the three standard retail configurations as being out of stock."

This is the middle story on the page is at:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/19/briefly_r_e_m_at_apple_store_imac_inventories_iphone_music_apps.html

However, I checked a couple of hours ago on the John Lewis website and all three standard configurations are in stock. Both 2.4GHz models do include "FREE Office 2008 worth £99.95."

Fitting that it would be on April Fool's day for all of us angst-ing over this for months. ;)

Another bogus rumor, although the free office is a pretty sweet deal if they were looking to clear out some stock... OVERSTOCK that is.

has anyone actually confirmed that apple was forced to switch the MB and MBP over to penryn because of stock shortages. anyone think that maybe it just had more to do with the timeframe and the fact that penryn only has advantages for real labtops whereas the iMac will benefit mightly from the montevina platform?
