That just sucks

i have had a perfect iMac, no freezing problems at all since I first bought my 2.4ghz 4gb ram back in early sept.

i am very aware of all the issues people are having with the new imac but I thought i was part of the lucky ones without any issues!

SO! i see that software update tells me that apple has an imac software update...why NOT?!? right....if apple tells me to 'update' my system its obviously for a reason and typically for the better....

I installed it and right after i rebooted after the installation my comp froze, i tested the update and ran a 3D intensive applications..well not really 'intensive' i had a bunch of windows up and cycled through iDVD's stock menu animations....and used expose a few times and spaces, surely it froze....

After that reboot I noticed that there were friggin white artifacts on my dock and on other areas of the screen...WHAT THE HECk!

So, after my 4th reboot or so, I haven't had an issue. Fingers crossed if this software update screws up my lovely computer ill be right peeved...

c'mon APPLE!

Even if it's more than 5% if they want to avoid Class Action they will replace all the freezers. I think Apple wouldn't be that dumb and remain silent.

A company known for quality products...

Letting this happen. Wow.

I am not sure if my next computer will be a Mac.

:(

Will I have to spend hours on the phone to get mine replaced or will Apple actually fess up about their mistake?

Just for fun I snagged "thefrozenapple.com" earlier today... anyone good at website building want to put something together to stick on digg and submit to any other apple news site? :)

I'm glad I decided to stop by here before moving from 1.0 to 1.3 at least. Now I can avoid having to figure out how to roll back to 1.0 again. I'm so sick of this.

Guys, I don't think we need to make a big fuss about this matter. As long as Apple can replace the freezers with something that works we should be satisfied.

I know this is disappointing for the long-time Apple fans because the QC dropped but hopefully this would teach them a lesson and get the QC back up to standard.

I'm still buying an iMac this week. I'm hoping it's not a freezer and if it is I can still refund it. Can someone give me an idea of what will DEFINITELY freeze the iMac under Leopard?

Well I spent 5 hours on the phone today with out a resolution...

1 call was 2 hours on hold and then they hung up on me...

I think I have every right to make a big deal... Apple is not acknowledging this problem...

I've been "not making a fuss" since September... tiptoeing around my machine and the apps that cause it to freeze. Exactly how long should I continue to do so?

And as far as what will freeze the machine under Leopard - LEOPARD will freeze the machine if you have this issue.

In my case, the machine freezes within seconds of the OS booting. I have to use Tiger with patch 1.0 or NOTHING works.

I wouldn't be so upset if i knew that i could take it to the store and they would 100% replace the video card. I know that i have to first call, wait forever, go to store, wait until guy wastes my time, argue for replacement video card, et c etc. If apple sent out recall and said we'll replace cards bring em in that would be the greatest news (second to a software fix)

My retailer promised me if I get a Freezer I can take it back.

Hopefully Apple will recall. Those of us who have had their computers for more than 60 days (waiting for Apple's promised fix) will have to ready for battle with tech support, otherwise. It would be vastly preferable to have a no-hassle trade-in than to be forced into a repair job that could lead to other issues and also take much longer.

Hi I am new here, and been following this thread for a few days now. I am having the same freezing / white pixels issues on my 24inch iMac 2007 model.

I installed the 1.3 update (running Leopard) on my iMac 24 inch, and at first it didn't freeze, but eventually it did, after scrolling over the dock long enough. Also still see the white pixels running around the first 2 times I booted. For some reason, booting a 3rd time, the machine runs fine for now for the last 30 minutes (no white pixels).

During the crash, a crash report was generated when I rebooted, and it included the following info:

0x51d67db8 : 0x12d165 (0x58f3b68 0x3f275a0 0x0 0x0)
Backtrace continues...
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(5.1.8)@0x406f5000->0x40797fff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.5)@0x2e955000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4)@0x2e600000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(1.5)@0x2e8b8000

Looks like it is the ATI Radeon video card.

I reported it to Apple.

Let me know if anyone else has seen something similar after the 1.3 update (on Leopard).

Call me simple... How do you access the log that indicated a faulty video card?

Lead in paint

This sounds like the lead in paint recall for children's toys. Some poor soul is paid crap wages to make these video cards. The work 12-14 hours a day and some super is yelling at them to make more. So bad boards get counted as good so everyone can look good on the production line.

Stop blaming Apple for everything; Apple will take care of this issue for you. I feel for those of you who are going through this, I am sure I would spit fire.

I just do not think one single fix is going to get it done, if software can fix it.

C'mon! Stop blaming Apple for this? They approved the parts that are going into the machine! Would you not blame GM for putting faulty tires on their cars? Or a builder for putting faulty bricks in their buidlings?

Astounding...

Remember Ford

Bridgestone/Firestone paid for the tires Ford put on the SUVs the flipped. But my point is, its an assembly line; and the pressure to produce lots of iMacs allowed, perhaps, some crap hardware to enter the system. Of course Apple has to make it right, but can't we just get these units fixed and focus on that! That's all.

With all due respect.. I don't think you are being realistic here. We buy a computer from Apple and it doesn't work properly. There is no one to blame for that but Apple.

There are multiple problems here now. These iMacs have been on sale for nearly 3 months. iMacs sold as recently as last week are freezing still. And those who bought on or near release day are fast running out of AppleCare cover.

For those people, nigh on 3 months is a long time to wait for an update that does not even work.

And remember, we're not talking about some niggling issue that is merely mildly annoying, yet liveable with. We're talking about an issue which will effectively lock up the Mac entirely, often while doing nothing but the most mundane tasks which doesnt even begin to put the machine through its paces. This renders the Mac undependable in the extreme.

Apple built them. Apple sells them. Apple is not fixing them. Honestly, who else is there to blame, but Apple?

That might not happen given the recent upgrading problems (1.1 and now 1.2/1.3). We can't do anything to get these things fixed. It is Apple's responsibility plain and simple and it is our duty as consumers to remind Apple of their responsibility.

Wow, i haven't experienced freezes with my 24" and judging by some posts here I'm glad I didn't actually apply the 1.3 update yet!
