Hmmm, I've done the Leopard 10.5.1 update, but have yet to see this graphics firmware update on my 24" iMac.

I've never had a freezing problem though.

Ditto. I thought I'd see the update, but nothing. But since I don't have the freezing problem, I won't worry about it.

Update

My IMac previously crashed all the time. I am now running Itunes visualizer at 63 frames per second with no lockup. The problem is surely fixed!

I also had similar XBench scores before and after on my wife's 24" 2.4 GhZ

Quartz before-after
197.64-195.86

Open GL before-after
180.54-178.16

Close enough for rock 'n' roll!

We need a poll on this thread to see who has their systems fixed and who doesn't.

Either way, looks safe to order my iMac now.

iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0

The latest software update Apple Imac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 has deemed my new Mid 2007 2.8 Ghz 24" iMac does not need updating. Normally I would not worry too much about this, as I have in fairness only suffered a few freezes which required a restart by switching the iMac off. However uncertainty is not good when you're entrusting a lot of important data to your computer.

I have definitely had the occasional freeze as described by others; admittedly this was mainly using 10.4.10. I also had the screen corruption in the area of cover flow within iTunes.

It seems more stable since upgrading to Leopard.

What concerns me is not knowing exactly what the latest firmware is correcting and why this isn't necessary for all new Mid 2007 iMacs?

I'm sure it would be comforting for all new iMac owners to know they can be certain how and why their new iMac is definitely not affected?

Does anyone know why only some particular new iMacs are deemed in need of this firmware update?

Please, please Apple issue a statement to clear up all the confusion about this issue, this will stop your loyal supporters from worrying unnecessarily?

The solution seems to be in line with the one dell provided (new vga bios as well). I shelled out 2300 eur for my 2.8ghz machine that will be arriving shortly.
As I am a student that´s a lot of money. I am really looking forward to a new computer experience.

I have a 24" 2.8 iMac as well and it showed up immediately in software update.
Are you on 10.5.1 yet?

Mike

Have you installed the iMac 1.3 update for Leopard?
This is required.

I never had the freezing issues (not had it for long mind) but happy for those who did :) Very encouraging re: Apple in general, shouldn't have expected any less really.

Just installed it. Hasn't solved the gradient but I wasn't expecting it to (it's the panel backlight bleeding, can't see how it possibly could). Nor has it solved the fuzz/interference effects or rough gradients in Windoze but I wasn't expecting that either... that'll be a monitor driver IMO, as XP is pretty much designed for 32-bit colour whilst the iMac 20" panel is 6-bit with interpolation, or so I heard.

Anyway even though I didn't have the freezing issues it gives me more confidence in the thing somehow :)

Well, my iMac only froze very occasionally. During games for the most part, like UT2004. It froze up only the other day with that.
I just installed 10.5.1 and looked for the firmware update, and it isnt there. So according to Apples tech notes, my iMac doesnt need it
Perhaps its bundled into 10.5.1 then?

Which MemVendorID does your card have? Maybe we can narrow it down to people getting the firmware update have one MemVendorID over another?

Darn, with this update I thought I finally would be able to play Madden '08. I guess not because the words are still jumbled. I wonder if they are ever going to fix this.

It only lets you install if your MemVendorID is 600 and your MemRevisionID is 100. Mine wasn't.

mh$ ioreg -l | grep ATY | grep Mem
| | | | "ATY,MemVendorID" = <0100>
| | | | "ATY,MemRevisionID" = <0900>

Maybe some one brave wants to edit the javascript in the installer? Since I have had freezes before just now I'm thinking this is a limited release of the patch, then once its confirmed to help they will release a new one for other (newer) memory revisions.

Ditto. I thought I'd see the update, but nothing. But since I don't have the freezing problem, I won't worry about it.

Ditto on the ditto. Installed the Leopard update, rebooted, and the iMac update did not appears. Now granted, in the month I have owned the machine, never had a freeze, but it really makes me wonder how they are determining what machine needs the update and which ones do not?

MemVendorID = 0100
MemRevisionID = 0900

Perhaps worthwhile mentioning.. I had not installed the 1.3 update in 10.5.0, and the update was gone when I updated to 10.5.1 today. I guess 1.3 was rolled into the 10.5.1 update, which I largely expected.
