That's what I thought about the retina imac when it came out too and I got burned... literally burned. My iMac throttled nearly all the time, the GPU runs at 99C constantly and I had to get a replacement mac because the GPU burnt the screen and made a blue stain. I also replaced the screen 3 times from image retention which may have been from poor thermals.
My iMac doesn't throttle, and while I don't always push it hard, there have been times when I was

they never intended to even make another Mac Pro.
Yes, absolutely. We totally agree there.

Even the "Trashcan" was just a design experiment in my opinion.
The wanted to showcase sth to Pixar, they were probably all using old Mac Pros and demanded something special.

The MacPro as I love it (I still have a 2008 MacPro 3,1), is not on Apples mind at all.

Super frustrating. I wish they'd still offer that sort of Mac as a BTO online only option and just bury it on the website. None of the mainstream would even have to know they were making such an "ugly" (and useful) Mac! :)

Hell - Make it available through Business reps only and don't even put it on the main website, I really wouldn't care. I just want it..

Do you run an external 4k screen from it? My 2014 GPU runs at 99C with a 4k screen attached and at 80C with just the built in display. My CPU runs slightly cooler but I see it throttling all the time (it's an i7).

The surface studio is a mini pc with an old graphics card connected to a movable screen, yes it shows some innovation but so does stuffing a full professional workstation into a slim compact all in one with a 5k screen.

You mean a pin sharp full touchscreen with better calibration then Apple and on the fly calibration switching and the dial which fully integrates with the screen and software plus high end PC components, actually that’s hypocrisy seeing as that’s what Apple use, they are all PC components, the GPUs are all based in gaming graphics cards!
No, the iMac Pro is not innovation, it is desperation to try and please and keep your customers who have left in droves, and they may well continue to, because I can’t see many professionals wanting to take their iMac Pro to an Apple store when it breaks and therefore losing them time and money, Dell or HP can provide onsite support, then again you can unscrew their computers as opposed to ungluing them...
I think you’ll find the real modular Mac Pro is the one people want, looking at the costs it won’t be much different to that of the iMac Pro either!

Talking innovation, the Surface Studio has it in droves, the iMac Pro not so much. They could and will update the Studio hardware, but it’s not built for gaming...

I don’t hate the iMac Pro, just see it as a bit pointless, the cost is incredibly high yet it’s still glued together and you can’t upgrade a thing in it? This is a machine built to earn money, so if it breaks as I said you’ll lose money? To me a machine at that price that’s upgradable and can be easily repaired makes more sense.

A fresh new idea doesnt mean innovation

Not sure what you class as innovation as then? Nothing it would seem...

Desktop computers are kind of commodities now; barring something no one here can envision they are just re-packages of similar tech in similar ways. A box, keyboard and screen. Either attached or not.

Apple's goal wasn't to break new ground, it was to provide a fast machine for videographers, sound and coding folks, the pro market it had kinda ignored of late. They just wanna get work done I expect, not have to retrain a bunch of folks to use Premiere or something with a voice controlled interface and 3d display a la the Matrix....

Apple used to be the ones pushing ahead on screen resolution and quality. They should be releasing a 43" 8k iMac. There have been nice 8k displays for PC for a while now. I think their space donut building has slowed down development operations at apple.

link, please?

Dell sells one and over a year ago the supply chain showed LG had one in the works.

I was certain that the iMac Pro would be a product and have an 8k display, at least optionally.

I'm really surprised that doesn't exist and I think it will actually come as a different model.

That and the chin - simply lazy to non-existent design allowing that chin to be there. The sd card slot on the back, lazy, cheapass.

Great point about the SD card slot…
It is the one port that is absolutely dysfunctional to have on the back.

If they don't want it to be seen they could at least put it on the bottom edge

The reviews for the Mac Pro on youtube report on how quiet the mac pro is. I am worried apple did the same thing they just did with the new macbooks where they sacrifice some performance and let the machine throttle so that they can keep the fans low/quiet.

I dont think the iMac Pro will be able to cool itself. Maybe for burst tasks but not sustained tasks.

Having a heat source right next to the screen in an all glued together enclosure can never be good in the long run. And no apple engineers will not defy laws of physics. Prolonged heat over a period of time will lead to more failures on higher end (more power hungry) versions.

It may run warm pushing all those pixels (as is to be expected) but that doesn’t mean its throttling.

None of the things you listed are apple innovations. Not a single one.

And what force from heaven is keeping them from using the old case?

Sounds like you’re envious hehe... Macs are making a big comeback in the pro arena... to own a Mac you need to pony up the $$ for the elegance of pristine performances and user experience he he... windows and PC’s are Mattel toys. This machine for an all-in-one is simply a MONSTER to only take up the space of a monitor on your desk... nice work Apple!

Sorry but simply stuffing more powerful components into a chassis a few years old in design with a screen you already sell is not innovation, the Surface Studio was innovation with a fresh new idea to a target market.

Ha ha ha ha lol you’re so happy

Sorry... XEON is NOT gaming he he! Where do you guys come from anyway???? ECC RAM is NOT gaming lol!

The iMac Pro isn't for everyone, and I wish Apple had put a little more upgradability into the design (at least a RAM access door, even the normal 27" has that). But overall it's a step in the right direction, and Apple did do a lot of things right (price to performance, decent cooling system, compact all-in-one form factor with 5K display).

After all, professionals just want something that can be justified as a business expense to get work done. And from what I've seen in the reviews, the iMac Pro qualifies.

That being said, I continue to hold out hope for a new modular Mac Pro in 2018. And if Apple decides to consider its customers worthy of a new low-cost quad-core Mac mini, that'd be great, too.

You cannot use the word 'Pro' and 'iMac' in the same sentence. Just another sealed unit wallet inflater for Apple. Provide something your customers can work with and more importantly upgrade themselves.

Where is this company going?

I think that there is something flawed about your logic.

Oh yes I am the one with a logical fallacy, the fallacy is certainly not with the company who has had a long history of thermal throttling and overheating who has just decided it would be an excellent idea to put even more beefy hardware into an incredibly small space. Oh yes, I can't possibly imagine what could go wrong here...
