The Mac haters think think they know more than Apple Engineers and Management. Which one is worth 886 billion this morning?

To be fair, that management has publicly stated that both the Mac Pro and TB MBP were mistakes they are correcting. Apple's had more than their fair share of bad decisions. Being rich doesn't make you right.

I don't know if it will be a success or not. I like it. But the question I struggle with is "Who is the computer for exactly?"

It's too expensive for the consumer market, and not upgradeable enough for the pro market? Do you really want to spend 13,000 or even 5,000 on a computer that you can't upgrade anything on?

Near as I can tell it's for small business and content creators? People not doing 3D or heavy VFX and short form content that want power?

If you buy an iMac Pro today, probably you can keep it for about 5 years. If you mount 64GB today, do you think you would upgrade that RAM if you could do it?
I ask you this because in my whole life I never upgraded the RAM in a computer, I always changed all because the problem was not "I don't have enough RAM".

whatever works man, i always upgrade parts, including ram, far more sensible way to spend resources

My greatest resource is time. And the iMac Pro serves that up in spades.

The iMac Pro may not be the right tool for some and that's cool. But the many people that are quick to call it stupid, a waste of money, and "not pro" are simply using their comments to masquerade their jealousy and insecurities.

If its not the right tool for you, then quietly move on and buy the right tool for your own needs. But to try and put it down just makes one look ridiculous.
congrats bro hope you love it

That’s it, we need a proper PC maker to step back into the game, push prices, and give the Mac some serious competition. Apple will not innovate **** until that happens. Why would they?

Literally billions in the warchest, and apple has given us these ground breaking innovations to the iMac: two fans, two new holes in the iMac case, and some black paint.

Is this a joke?

Where is the 5K Cinema Display? Why don’t they put the thermals from the iMac Pro into the regular iMac and offer proper desktop graphics? Where is the modular Powermac (sorry, “Mac Pro”)? What happened to external GPUs (pretty much the one thing Thunderbolt can do that legacy ports can’t)?

Someone at apple needs to be fired.

You will be disappointed.

The iMac Pro and the Mac Pro will be targeted at the same market : Those who need extreme CPU (and GPU calculation) for professionnal work, who need as much CPU core they can get, who need ECC RAM, etc.

It is not targeted at gamers. The Mac Pro won't be just as the iMac Pro isn't.

Accept this and you will be happier.

What do you use thunderbolt for?

I know you were asking this question to someone else, but I currently use Thunderbolt 2 to connect to two different OWC Thunderbays. One is set up as a RAID 5 and the other as a RAID 0. When I transition to an iMac Pro (or possibly the upcoming Mac Pro) I will also use Thunderbolt to add an additional 5K display.

There are lots of uses for Thunderbolt for those of us that need speed and the ability to push very large amounts of data.

I take back what I said, thunderbolt is really good. Unfortunately, apple doesn't seem to be doing anything to unlock Thunderbolt's full potential. The Thunderbolt display (discontinued!) is over 6 years old.

I remember when those came out! I was going to buy one but decided to wait for the 32" release. I forgot I was still waiting for this! I use a 43" 4k now and would be thrilled if apple upped the game on displays. They could release a 43" or 50" 8k display and I don't even care what it costs, I'd buy it. I can't believe the imac pro is only 27" still, I would have to seriously downgrade my display or else put my display directly in front of the imac if its even possible to turn off its main display.

How close do you sit?

27" at 5K barely fits the definition of "retina" -- it's certainly nice but I can still see pixels and it's not, say, mobile phone grade pixel density (iMac = 218 ppi vs iPhone X = 458 ppi)

But 43" at 4K, the pixels must look like boulders!

i found that by the time it came to upgrade my 2006 mac pro the rest of the mac was so outdated it made more sense just to buy another mac instead , so i bought a tricked out 5k imac

the difference in performance was utterly staggering

going from a wheezy old hd to ssd and as for the cpu ... oh crikey

everything became instantaneous !!!

I keep mine for three years and replace them when AppleCare is over, by then the new models have enough improvements to warrant the change. I try to choose a configuration that will be relevant for the three years.

What's funny/sad is if you do this with the Mini or Pro, you'll get the exact same computer that you bought 3 years ago. :p

And you'd still have a 3 year old computer, effectively. :D

Oh yeah, a design disaster. I've had Thunderbolt on my computer 5 years, and I've used it exactly ZERO times

So you haven't had the pleasure of using RAIDs, Video I/O and/or anything that required faster bandwidth.
Then honestly, the iMac Pro or any professional computer isn't for you.

It is pushed all the way to the back of the desk. Am I the only one around here who needs room for activities on my desk?

Isn't that the point i.e. Apple haven't really been making meaningful new models at their computer division for a few years now. This so called new iMac Pro is just an iMac on steroids.

Sorry but simply stuffing more powerful components into a chassis a few years old in design with a screen you already sell is not innovation, the Surface Studio was innovation with a fresh new idea to a target market.

The Surface Studio is a joke. I've seen where people could not even use it with Lightroom properly without lagging. Performance wise, it's a waste of money.

I love the concept of it, and I think MS could have knocked one out of the park. I agree, MS swung and missed on the implementation of the concept. The hardware is just too lacking especially at the price they're charging

If they put in high end desktop (not workstation class) hardware, it would likely overheat. And it's a mile away from being optimized for workstation (Xeon) class hardware like the iMac Pro.
