The Surface Studio is a joke. I've seen where people could not even use it with Lightroom properly without lagging. Performance wise, it's a waste of money.

It is a beautiful concept. I do get amused at the MS store minions scrambling to do a demo as the Studio never seems to work correctly, particularly the puck. The MS store is directly across the mall from the Apple store and they always have a dozen employees standing around while it’s a long wait to even see a person to buy anything at Apple.

Frankly, I’m pretty much done with both of the retail stores. At least the MS store does seem to have about every configuration of the Surface products on hand. Apple had nothing but the base configurations in stock. They use to stock a high end configuration but no more.

For that matter, if the MS store had had a decent laptop like the Thinkpad T series or X1Carbon, on display I would have ditched my MBP ages ago - at least for work. I still like my Mac at home for the entertainment ecosystem, and I can still work from it when needed, which is pretty much daily. I have had two Surface Pros but they were both frustrating as there is so much potential to be let down by glitchy display issues when docked. Also bought a Surface Laptop as it’s got nice specs and is very comfortable to use, but I returned it because I did not feel the finish would hold up and the ports were hugely lacking even compared to the new MacBook Pro’s.

Btw, why do the new MacBook Pros FEEL so much heavier than they are. I have been baffled by this. I think the thinness makes the weight seem even more. Maybe it’s because being smaller they feel more densely packed.

That’s it, we need a proper PC maker to step back into the game, push prices, and give the Mac some serious competition. Apple will not innovate **** until that happens. Why would they?

Literally billions in the warchest, and apple has given us these ground breaking innovations to the iMac: two fans, two new holes in the iMac case, and some black paint.

Is this a joke?

Where is the 5K Cinema Display? Why don’t they put the thermals from the iMac Pro into the regular iMac and offer proper desktop graphics? Where is the modular Powermac (sorry, “Mac Pro”)? What happened to external GPUs (pretty much the one thing Thunderbolt can do that legacy ports can’t)?

Someone at apple needs to be fired.

A new display is coming. A new Mac Pro is coming. The iMac Pro is Gen 1---I think they want to make sure the thermals in the new machine are solid before stuffing them in the old machine. External GPU's work over TB 3.

I'm not really sure what the issue is here. They are explicitly working on or doing just about all that you are complaining about, including offering support for VR.

The iMac Pro is Gen 1
While I think Apple has designed the iMac Pro to handle the heat, I do remember the issues of the first generation 5k iMac and it had a tendency to throttle. Something the 2015 model by and large doesn't have. Given the better GPU and the high Xeon core count, heat management must have been on the top of the must have list. The proof will be in the pudding, as all this talk is just pure speculation.

I'm not down on the iMac Pro, though its wildly expensive and not for me. My 2015 iMac is more computer then I need, but my needs are more humble then others.

You cannot use the word 'Pro' and 'iMac' in the same sentence. Just another sealed unit wallet inflater for Apple. Provide something your customers can work with and more importantly upgrade themselves.

Where is this company going?
Where’s your company?
Let’s hear some of the names of your computers... here’s a good name for the computer that you would build... “ jalopy” he he!

I was all for a new iMac and sold the 2015 Retina iMac I had during the ending of last year. I had sold it off in preparations that a newly designed iMac release was in the works, which sadly wasn't the case. That being said I then moved onto a Microsoft Surface Studio and haven't had any regrets since.

I may venture back into the Mac computer world if the iMac gets a new design or if the Mac Pro and Pro Display brings something new and great to the Mac line up but sadly I doubt the iMac will be getting a new design anytime soon given the release of this new iMac Pro.

Really? I don’t see no all-in-one PC with 18 Cores!!!!
Re: the competition comment. There is plenty of competition. Go build a killer PC tower. I know you know this.

I get so tired of the tech community screaming "competition!" and then having no idea what that word means.

There is plenty of competition. Go for it and stop whining.

Couldn't you just order a Thinkpad online?

I think the macbooks feel heavier for the reason you mentioned---they are very dense.

I would never order a laptop online sight unseen. I have to carry one for work and use in every imaginable location. Many times while standing. Ergonomics, balance, and feel are the biggest criteria and why the SurfaceBook was not an option.

We have not had a real computer store in years. I would love to have a store like B&H where you can check out everything in person.

I think you are missing his point. The CPU exists/will exist. So by virtue of that, there will be "competing" builds that will be powered by the 18 Core CPU. What DOESN'T exist is an All-in-one 18 Core build. Why? Because unless your company buys/leases it for you or has a company to service them, very few people would willingly lock themselves into such a device.

Just look at the lockin for the Mac Pro. Sure, reliability is top notch, but the CPU/GPU lockin makes the Mac Pro fall far behind a PC that is build for a fraction of the price.

One piece on the All-in-one breaks, the entire machine is out of commission. One piece fails on a non All-in-one, and simple swap means much less downtime to a function computer again.

Also, at this point, we only have Apple's word when it comes to cooling. And Apple doesn't have the best track record with respect to keeping powerful machines cool.

So the no competition for an 18 Core all-in-one is a very valid statement, with lots of implications - only some of which I just spelled out.

I was responding to the commenter before guy quoted. My mistake in not making that clear!

AU$9K for a Nikon D5 body
AU$20.4K for an iMac Pro “To The MAX”

If I had ~$30k burning a hole in my pocket, sure why not? I’d love to see what I could do with it.

I can only imagine how much greater the quality and how much more profitable the output of my production could be with this cutting-edge gear over say my current 7 year old D90 and nearly 10 year old Mac Pro 3,1...

Or would it just be a case of “Deeper pixels”...? That’s a lot of money for the sake of keeping up to date.

The D5 body alone won’t cut it. You’d have to buy the “holy trinity” 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 + a couple of quality primes (85/1.4, 50/1.4, 35/1.4, 24/1.4 to begin with, and the good to have 200/2, 105/1.4 and a couple of tilt-shifts). We are getting closer to AU$100 but who cares, this is pocket money.

Yes, I guess I was thinking of the economic route and reusing my FX lenses.. why reuse old gear when you can just buy new!!

A D5 won't even make the base iMac Pro sweat so you would save a lot of computer money ;)

honestly the imac pro isn't for you if you think it's overpriced. IT's because you don't understand why these components cost as much as they do. Get over it. Some things may not just be for you. NO need to cry about it.

and don't you think the "lack of competition" tells you something? It tells you either

1) Apple is just leagues in front of everybody else
2) there's just not much to innovate on in this space
