iMac Pro VESA-Gate

Scary story. Pissed me off too. Not to mention that mount looked so flimsy. No way could I trust a 5000 dollar machine to hang on the wall just with 5 tiny screws that apprently break.

I’ve started exclusively buying electronics on my AmEx Plat. The peace of mind is worth it. Anything goes wrong with a company AmEx does fight on your behalf.

Sadly it seems that all companies today are going cheap where they can. :(

At least Quinn seems to be level headed and was being as honest with his video, unlike Linus.

When I have Quinn's type of problem my temper usually gets the best of me and I usually end up demanding that I talk to the person's boss or even their boss. I realize the people who are on the front line have their hands tied to some extent. What gets me is how Apple is trying to pass the buck on an $80 part when the computer costs $5000+. Apple should be ashamed of themselves and that is a good way to lose their loyalty based people who have bought Apple throughout the years. :oops::mad:

Sounds like my recent laptop warranty repair experience... the training part... they had to send it to Tx for repair after failing locally.
 
It was pretty egregious. That stand looked mangled after he picked it up from the Apple store, how/why was there no quality check done before telling Quin his computer was good to go?

Sleezy apple is the name of the brand. You gotta wonder if Apple would do this to Mac pro.
 
Several issues here:
  • Quality of components that they sell is subpar and not good enough
  • They put their brand on it and refuse to give support
  • Re-assemble the iMac with a clearly damaged stand
  • lie about the repair
  • wanted to charge for the repair
  • Clueless technicians
  • Damaged iMac

I'm surprised that there aren't as many people trying to blame the YouTuber or comments such as "Oh Well then Maybe you should have not removed the stand at all then!" Or something like that.

It’s pretty bad. The shoddy quality of the screws, the customer service referring him to the oem of the mount (seriously?) for a 5k “Pro” machine. Then the shoddy work mangling the stand.

Oh wow, as someone who uses both an iMac Pro (and not a base model either) as well as the VESA Stand this doesn't sound very comforting!

It's very interesting how Apple mentions that one can remove the stand should they wish!

You guys are gutsy. I’d never have the cojones to hang a 27lb USD 5000 machine on the wall just supported by 5 screws. Not very good screws at that looking at this video. What if a screw breaks when it’s hanging? Crash landing on your desk and more than likely not covered by Applecare.

That is another design flaw in the Apple VESA mount, and also as such in the actual foot stand as well. The screws should not be part of the support system. The screws should only act as part of the retaining system. Like a cotter pin on an axle. The cotter pin bears no weight, the cotter pin is simply a retainer.

On the iMac Pro, the stand and the VESA mount should have an interlocking shape to them, that when put together snaps into place and firmly attaches one to the other. All weight should be born on that interlocking groove as the mount snaps to the iMac (both the foot and the wall mount). The screws only function, should be to prevent you from accidentally unlocking the mutual grip that the iMac and the stand or VESA mount have upon each other.

In other words, the entire design is flawed. Not just the screws, the entire design is wrong. The screws should not be so brittle, and they should not have any part of actually supporting the iMac regardless of whether you use the original foot stand or the VESA wall mount.
