Can you all stay on topic seriously debate the nuances of 12 somewhere else:rolleyes:

Right. Back on-topic, then: A hacker wiki, a link to which cannot be posted here by the group's own request, is making an announcement at midnight tonight, just like they did at midnight yesterday.

It's still not anything to do with simlocks or provider locking.

It's nothing to do with the encrypted filesystem disk image, as that's already been cracked.

It's nothing to do with activating the phone without signing up for AT&T, because that's already been done, both by them and by DVD Jon.

Since they've been focusing on low-level hardware and trying to get access to the debug menus, and since the wiki stated it was going to "open the door to help others understand what we've done", it's probably either documentation, or yet another tool that'll serve more to satisfy curiosity than add functionality.

And since the wiki link won't be posted here, I rather fail to see the point of bringing this up here, particularly as it doesn't address what most of the people posting here want: an unlocker.

Well it does redirect our attention over there. You are right most people probably want the end result, but I think the process is cool.

Hopefully they will have something usable in the near future

Maybe it is the 500th announcement from some "hacker" saying they are getting close to unlocking the phone, in the past 6 days?

Apparently tonights news could be bigger than they initially thought.

Code:
  5 July 2007 8:15pm update

<@gj> so...
<@gj> looks like I was a little premature about some things
<@gj> we can run any file
<@gj> we can start and stop things on the iPhone at will
<@gj> we can get files on the phone and put them wherever we like
<@gj> we can get into the bootloader and commands are successful though we can't read the output yet
<@gj> we have essentially
<@gj> totally reversed the restore process, and totally own several things on the phone
<@gj> our technique is based around doing interesting things with restore, and while I can't publish any code yet
<@gj> I promise you we will put some information up tonight when we get finished hacking, and we will still do a major release tonight
<@gj> tomorrow will bring some more work on the tool we are releasing, which will allow you to do much more with the phone
<@gj> I cannot stress enough how close we are to the internals of the phone, and the closer we get, the more opportunity we have to mess with the unlock functions themselves
<@gj> so I am moving on to that portion of the effort myself, while the other guys work on this
<@gj> so that when they are done, I can have some clearly formed ideas
<@gj> I do believe it is reversible by Apple but I think we may be able to recover from that reversal and I doubt they will stop us at this point, since we are in capabilities very important to the phone
<@gj> and to "re-engineer them"
<@gj> would be a pretty significant effort, in my opinion
<@gj> guys, I cannot stress enough
<@gj> how absolutely revolutionary
<@gj> some of these advances have been in the past 20 minutes
<@gj> what we can do is leaps and bounds ahead of where we were
<@gj> I will be in touch tonight closer to the release
<@gj> I am NOT answering any more questions until then
<@gj> these guys need to work and I need to think
<@gj> so i'll be back
<@gj> thanks for your support
<@gj> and if you want to help
<@gj> like REALLY want to help
<@gj> there are some people that need phones very badly
<@gj> $500 is a lot of money but
<@gj> maybe you could help on that front.
<@gj> thanks!

Come on iPhone Doom! Or maybe Duke Nukem iPhone Edition? :)

Really, though, I'd like to see sshd started, and maybe customizable ringtones. Anything else would be great too. :)

I don't think they've got gcc cross-compiling to ARM Mach-O yet.

I'd prefer ssh (the client, not the daemon), terminal.app (or perhaps a port of iTerm), and bash.

I hope they come up with a way to turn the iPhone into a full blown Macintosh, with the ability to run Windows applications natively.

I want to play Battlefield 2 on the iPhone.

Not to sound like a sour apple but why do I get that feeling that 12 will come and pass and nothing will happen. I hope im wrong we will see.

So, a bunch of info on things that aren't done yet, and a file listing/modification tool.

Forgive me, but I fail to understand why an announcement of a supposed accomplishment, with no actual software to back it up yet, is major.

When I see proof, which I wouldn't be surprised to see soon, I'll accept it as big news.

For now? It isn't anything more than their word that they've done something big.
What part of "filesystem modification tool" confused you, exactly?
The "release" part.

file listing/modification tool... then we can modify our mp3 to aac and replace the ringtones to whatever we want it to be....:D

Looking at the tool, I don't belive the ability to place files on the device is there yet. Unless it's via a complete restore image. The list of available commands doesn't seem to include anything capable of moving files to the iPhone.

Nor does the tool seem to have anything but the most rudimentary filesystem manipulations, e.g., creating directories. No file moving or copying, no renaming, etc.

I'm sure it'll come in time, but unless the command listing is incomplete, it's not there now.

ok..... So where do I download this tool?

You don't. Not yet, anyway. And even if it were available right this minute, someone apparently spread the word too far and wide, and the site's dead.

Keep abusing it, and it wouldn't surprise me if they move it again, and this time don't share the information of its new location with anyone.
