So much for a Midnight EST announcement, I think all of the reloading everyone has done just killed the bandwidth to that site.

ummmm.... how does me asking where to download an advertised tool equate to me abusing anything?

lose the attitude man.

It wouldn't do them much good with the open source crowd to hide it so that no one can help them further now would it?

So it isn't out.

Availability of the code and availability of the code's documentation are two separate things.

And I'll point out that I wasn't the one getting all frothed up over the midnight announcement. Just because someone makes an announcement doesn't mean every forum denizen needs to hold their breath and elevate it to the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It was an announcement.

It was an announcement at midnight, just like last night's was.

It's of interest to the folks who are centrally or peripherally involved in the bleeding edge of iPhone modification, either via the group effort undertaken and organized around that site, or independent of it.

It's of very little interest to anyone else, because the information simply isn't usable by 99% of iPhone owners.

Just for example, how many people actually have a working, valid token to use for the activation tool they released yesterday? How many can extract one? How many understand how to use DVD Jon's approach to activation?

These breadcrumbs being dropped by the hackerazzi aren't being provided as a point-and-click solution for the average person who went out and bought an iPhone. The information is being written by hackers -- often very tired hackers with little interest in fully explaining things to the average Joe -- for hackers.

Making a huge deal about them and pointing all and sundry at the resources they rely upon to do their work and communicate with each other does a disservice both to them, and to the laity who are misled into thinking that there's a pre-packaged, fully-documented solution to whatever problem they may think needs solving, just waiting for them at some mystical hacker website.

Progress Report - Latest update July 6, 12:00AM
Boot Loader

We've successfully been able to issue commands to the boot loader. Right now, we've been limited to power off, but we have made significant progress to other commands. Some of the commands are radio commands. This is our key to wealth and prosperity. :)
Unlocking

We know how to unlock the phone. The question is, can we get the commands to the radio to do so. We don't believe our method is the only method, but due to the help of some very smart folks, assuming we can get access to the radio, the firmware should be trivial to unlock.
iPhoneInterface

We've been very successful in writing a tool called iPhoneInterface to do some generic items on the phone and are releasing it tonight. We are including source code so you can understand our techniques. We will be expanding this tool significantly tomorrow. The best news for people is that we have prototype code for the following capabilities (not necessarily included in the first release):

* Running any application desired that's already on the phone
* A very hackish method to control what processes run on the phone
* Moving files around on the phone
* Getting the restore process working in verbose mode
* Activating the phone without iTunes and without a token

We have significant work continuing on this tool and tomorrow will probably have similarly worthwhile updates.
Hardware side

We are working on some prototype circuitry to access the debug capabilities of the phone. Stay tuned for more on this, I don't have any updates yet.
SVN
A public subversion server should be up by 1:00AM Eastern.

I can't think of any reason not to post the information from the wiki, for the curious ...

[Edit: Cut redundant info.]

Availability of the code and availability of the code's documentation are two separate things.
Yeah, I get that.

My question is "is the tool is out?" Not if a 4-color glossy brochure on how to install it is available.

If it's not available for download, it isn't a "release". If it is, then it is. It would seem that it'll be out when the code's available via SVN in a short while, no?

Information FROM the wiki is fine.

Information ABOUT the wiki isn't.

Since we're in such a wiki-cut-and-paste mood:

This wiki is public for a reason. WE WANT to share all the information we discover. It's in everyone's best interest for us to share the progress that has been made on making the iPhone an open platform.

Unfortunately web servers can only handle a finite amount of traffic. Wiki's are especially susceptible to high web traffic, and this has a negative effect on the project. It hinders development by making the server unreachable or unusable, and increases occurrences of vandalism (resulting in the alteration or removal of critical information needed for further development).

We have no problem with you using information from this wiki in news articles, blog posts, etc, but please do not link directly to this wiki from your article or post. You may mention the IRC channel so users can find us, participate, and contribute useful information, but please keep posts about the wiki to a minimum unless it's absolutely necessary.

If you'd like to debate the semantics of their announcement with them, feel free to join the IRC channel and have at it.

Yes the tool is out and is currently being mirrored over multiple sites as we speak. I currently have the tool on my hd right now. however as of right now there is only a windows version. There is a mac version being ported right now.

I can't wait until they unlock the phone, especially since they said they know how. ;) I'm Canadian and I can assure you I'll be zipping down to the US and grabbing one to use on Rogers. I do NOT need or want visual voicemail so it'd work out fine for me!

so not is out .. like i said, didint expect anything because a dude said so.

Yeah, how dare all these people sharing their efforts with you for free deign to use a development platform of which you do not approve? The very nerve!

iPhoneInterface.

Plenty of people know "what". We're not here to wait on you hand and foot.

No.

Nothing's great about it, from your point of view. It's interesting to people actively trying to code for the iPhone. For the average person (and in this case, "average person" = YOU), it's really not much use.

But feel free to continue being indignant about something you really don't have a need for, don't understand the purpose or significance of, and had false hopes for, based on a post hyping an announcement far beyond its actual importance.

Considering my sole interest in following up with this hasn't been mentioned, I think I'll ask: would this tool enable me to add files to the ring tones folder?

Not yet, no. Perhaps sometime tomorrow. But not this initial release.

what is this great wiki that u speak of? and what is w/ keeping secret or something? is it even secret? EXPLAIN!

PSP hacking was easier to follow :(

windows version ? iphone = MAC , and they release something for windows sux..
another example how mac is always treated as second. even hack for a product made by apple cant even be ported to mac first. so retarded. this is why i want to become a programmer, and i will!!!

srry had to vent, was really pissed off

i understand this is a pretty big breakthrough, and maybe, if dig deeper, we might have custom firmware. im just voicing the concept of always pc first --> mac second, never the other way around (except for certain programs made by apple) pisses me off

with a little bit of googling, you can find exactly what he's talking about. and he's right, at this point, what they're releasing will not be of use to the average user. however, it does seem they are on the right track to figuring out some pretty sweet stuff.

agreed...the 12'o'clock fight is irreverent.

Isn't mac almost always first for the innovations that PCs bring their life from? who made the first REAL home computers? Who invented the mouse? Who invented the multi-touch that has a similar copy that will become the M$ table computer the size of a small car? I think Apple has been a company first in many things, but M$ got lucky. Now it's going to be Apple's time to shine.
P.S. M$ XP doesn't even come with software to play a DVD.

this is all a great step forward, but other than widgets, i wouldn't expect to see custom apps installed on the phone any time soon. remember folks, it isn't an Intel or PowerPC CPU, it's an ARM CPU. applications would have to be ported or recompiled to work on a different architecture. this includes plugins and other media codecs.

step 1 in software will be adding your own ringtones and widgets. the 2nd step is waiting for people to port other useful apps over to ARM OS X.

although if they do successfully unlock the phone and can prove it still works well, iPhones will be even harder to find in stores. because everyone will be buying them, unlocking them, and selling them on eBay to people all over the world, screwing people that legitimately want one for it's intended purpose...to be used in the US on AT&T. job well done ;)

dont forget the (stolen) GUI
