iOS 9 - performance dropped on literally every device I've ever tried it on and very few new features apart from on very new iPads.

iOS 6 was similar to iOS 9 but I found it actually improved performance at least on the 4 and 3GS.

iOS 8 wasn't great, but it had enough important features.

My favourites have been iOS 4 for features, iOS 5 for some really great features, iOS 7 as the design was fresh and I enjoyed it despite running it on the oldest supported devices and iOS 10.

iOS 8 hands down. It was the biggest piece of optimized trash to ever come out of Cupertino.

Random OS glitches, animations rendering at 10 fps, sudden device rebooting. Biggest was super reduction of device performance. It had it all.

I didn't even have such poor experience on iOS 7. The poorly implemented forced device encryption on iOS8 may have been the reason behind it.

For me, the current one. I never had the phone locking on me, and the visual voicemail bricking the phone on any of the previous versions. And also whichever iOS started the banners showing me phone number only when a text comes in, whereby prior to this, it ALWAYS showed the contact name (when they were in my contacts obviously), but that bug still is present to this day, and I think that was about 2 or 3 iOS prior when that kicked in. Never was sorted out. I still get text alerts without contact's name, and I've no clue who it is, until I open the app, which is not terrible, but it should be fixed!

Plus when I switch off at night and it may have 34% or 20 something. When I switch on next morning it shows 2% or 0% and when I plug charger in it goes back to the 20 or 30 it was on, but not until I plug in and I can't plug in it won't work at all, and all these problems only started with iOS10. It won't work until I plug in to get correct reading. So I win. It's the worst one yet.

I would say every release get better and much more stable over the months but if we talk about the day it was released then I would say, without a doubt, iOS 8.
iOS 8.0 was a complete disaster and buggy mess with slow wifi issues, new features that didn't even worked, random reboots, crashes, animations lags... Moreover, iOS 8.0.1 just made it even worse with the infamous cellular bug.

My personal favorite version was iOS 7 (specifically 7.0.x) because of the design choices Apple made. I felt like everything was in its place with the amazing edge to edge design, the fonts and more that are not present in the newer versions of iOS.

And finally, the best one in my opinion is obviously iOS 10 with all the new features and rock solid performance since the very first release.

I think 10.0 was junk , but 10.1.x is ok

haven't tried 10.2,

what was junk about 10.0 was that it felt it performed OK, but compared to 9.3.3 it does not and the bugs are ones that dont immediately pop out at you ,they need time to settle.

but rampant!

I would say iOS 10 and 7 were the worst, 7.1 was ok though.

6 was junk too and 9 was kinda messy from 8.4 but I had new hardware on it so didn't suck as bad as what I heard from 6/6+ people

most initial releases have been junk, in recent years,

It would be easy to pick on the earlier versions of iOS for lacking features, but at the time it was still the best phone I'd ever used.

Honestly, iOS 7-9 are all pretty ugly and full of bugs, but I think iOS 7 was a tad worse than the others due to lack of refinement.

In agreement with @iOSUser7 regarding initial releases. iOS 8 was the dog of the bunch even though at end of life it finally got pretty stable. But if the question is "out of the box" hands down 8 was the worst due to the things mentioned.

iOS 8 was by far the buggiest release for me. It didn't feel stable and ready for public use until iOS 8.3.

Full disclosure: I didn't jump on the iOS bandwagon until a late version of iOS 3, and I avoided updating to iOS 6 until Google Maps was available for download in the App Store since at the time it was reported that Apple Maps was completely useless in Canada.

Do you remember iOS 7? Until 7.1 and speed bumped animations it was the worst iOS by far.

iOS 8 was bad too but not the worst.

True, the slow animations with iOS 7 prior to iOS 7.1 did make it feel a bit sluggish but for me everything still worked. The same can not be said for iOS 8 where the bugginess meant some basic phone functions didn't work consistently or reliably for me for months until iOS 8.3 was released. That's why for me iOS 8 was the worst. iOS 8 was the only version of iOS that seriously made me think about switching to an Android phone.

That said I'm surprised that iOS 7 and iOS 10 (a version which for me has felt rock solid from day 1) are both beating iOS 8 in the poll. I guess it goes to show that everyone has a different experience with iOS updates.

iOS 7. What a horrible OS that was compared to iOS 6. Fisher price colors, slowness, redesign took ages to be implemented in many apps (not that that's Apple's fault, but it's still a huge departure from iOS 6).

Apple had to make a change, ios 6 and earlier were really looking dated.

I think IOS 11 will slow down older devices like 5S and ipad air 1

You sort of brought that up in this thread before. What does that have to do with this thread (especially when you have another thread that you started that deals with that already)?
