I would agree on if it was just the homescreen stuff, but the iCloud syncing has been a big plus for me since I have multiple ATVs that I use every day. Having them stay in sync has been killer since I have a number of items that had to have their metadata selected due to multiple movies/tv shows with the same title. I'm an infuse beta tester and having the correct title show up everywhere on clean installs has saved me so much time and headaches. It's a great first step. Now I'd just like to see the actual parsing of the library synced so that I could do it on one ATV and have it done everywhere since it takes away to do all of my titles. The other thing I've asked for is being able to exclude a share from the sync so that I can do something like say have the bedroom TV have a share that you wouldn't want the family and friends to be able to see in the living room.
As a developer (not with infuse), I'll defend them a little here. I hate subscriptions too but have been thinking of moving a couple of my apps to it due to the way the app store works. Apple doesn't give us a way to charge for upgrades between version x to y in the AppStore. Once a user buys an app they own it, and get all upgrades to it, forever. It puts us in a bit of a hard spot because we want to continue to update and provide new features but we also need to eat and pay the mortgage. Since we can't do the old fashion method of offering the upgrade at a discount to existing users that leaves us with two choices, both bad. First is to release a "new" app that's a different SKU in the store which sucks because existing users have to pay full price for it and it's hard to let them know that they have to go to the store to download it. The other option is to go the subscription route which people don't really like either. It's really a rock and a hard spot issue for us. At least with the subscription option is should theoretically force us to keep improving the apps on a regular basis to keep the subscriptions active.
