I have a question: Is MKV supported in the free version? Because the app says it supports it, but I couldn't get them to play. And it looks like the free version misrepresents what it does. And so far, I've refused to buy the pro version even tho I like the idea of the app and liked it when I was using the free version...except for the MKV file issue.

Due to licensing requirements, certain video types will require Pro in order to play. Many MKV files will work in the free version.

You have to remember than MKV is just a "container," not an encoding. Simplifying things a lot, but generally Audio/Video files have two formats you have to keep track of. First, the encoding. Second, the container. Some decoders are free or built into the OS, some aren't. As far as I understand, Infuse free lets you use the free decoders but you need the pro version if you need to use a decoder for which they have to pay a license. As to the container, this is basically just the extension and how the encoding is packaged in the file. It can be avi, mkv, m2v, etc. The container doesn't matter very much, and they're all free. This is why answering a question about MKVs is difficult. Without knowing how the file is encoded, we don't know the answer.

I understand all of that, but Infuse never played a SINGLE mkv file I threw at it. I have plex set up, it plays everything. I set up Emby, it plays anything. I tried the MrMC Lite version, it played everything I tried (didn't try much because I didn't like it that much). But Infuse played none of them. I would like to use Infuse so I don't always have to have a server running. But it just bothered me the free version wouldn't do what it was advertised to do. Now, Infuse did play most other file formats I had. But a lot is set up as mkv and if it can't play that reliably, it's going to have to be passed over. Sadly. I really like the idea and it would be a benefit over the server system of plex, et al.

On the other hand, I really like how the developer is so active here and so responsive. That's really good to see and I applaud that.

As others above said, try the trial of the pro version.

If you have a video collection and like Infuse' UI and playback performance, the pro version has an extraordinary value. My yearly subscription was renewed recently. For a year, Infuse charges the same amount of money that Netflix charges for 14 days. It's ridiculously cheap.

Most of my DVDs and Blu-rays are ripped to the MKV container. They all work excellent with Infuse, playing from my NAS with the great convenience of not having a server running.

I highly recommend Infuse. The developers work hard, keeps customers informed about future plans, respond quickly, are knowledgeable and polite. Give the pro version a chance.

Fall is the air, leaves are changing, snow is on the horizon...and Infuse 5 is getting some exciitng new improvements in a huge new update.

A fresh new look
Introducing the all-new Infuse with a fresh new look built around the videos you love. We've taken the best parts of Infuse, rebuilt them from the ground up using modern frameworks, and made many other fine adjustments to get things just right. And of course, 5.6 looks great on the shiny new iPhone X.

Gorgeous HDR colors for all
In August, Infuse was the first to add support for HEVC video, and today we're proud to announce we're also the first to offer full support for HDR colors. Not only can HDR videos be played in their full glory on an HDR screen, we've also baked in dynamic range conversion so you'll get great color even when using older, non-HDR devices. No fiddling with transcoding or other quirky settings - just play the videos you want, and Infuse will handle the rest.

And much, much more...
Many other changes are packed into this release, such as a more efficient video playback pipeline, improved subtitles, and many other under-the-hood improvements to keep things working smoothly. A complete list of what's new can be found here.

Do more with PRO
Infuse gets even better when you go Pro, and when you download Infuse 5 you can test drive all the awesome new Pro features for an entire month, for free!

We always love hearing your comments, feedback, and suggestions - so please feel free to post a comment below or drop us a note anytime.

Enjoy!

Updated fine here on the Apple TV 4K. Currently streaming an uncompressed HDR-flavoured UHD .mkv across my network, and it is working flawlessly and looks incredible. Excellent work chaps. The best just got better.

Looking good. Hate to be impatient but do you have an eta for framerate and colour space switching? I’m itching to sell that shield tv of mine.

I’ve updated Phone and iPad, it looks really good.

My ATV 4K hasn’t updated yet though. I have bought Pro on my iPad - do I need to pay for Pro on my ATV also?
One purchase will cover all devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) so it should appear for you soon.

This is currently in progress, but it seems to be something we won't be able to release on the App Store until 11.2 is publicly available. :(

Thank you!

Unless you regularly switch between watching video-based PAL and NTSC material, you shouldn't have much of an issue with frame rate switching, and you aren't going to be watching 'much' HDR material with Infuse anyway, so having the auto-switching will be nice, but it's not a massive necessity to me. HDR support in general is what was missing, at least for the new 4K box, and now it's here, I couldn't be happier.

I disagree. I have a fair bit of hdr material and a good bit more SDR material. I like having my dash at 60hz but hate watching movies at that output.

I’ve been using the Shield TV for local media and auto switching is required for me to go back to infuse. I’ll keep using the shield tv until such times as they get it implemented.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy to see the progress in this update. Just need that one last hurdle cleared and I’m good to go.

I wish the Apple TV would auto switch to HDR for the screensavers but it’s not the end of the world. I agree with others - can’t wait for auto frame rate and range switching in Infuse, at least I can now watch the films I’ve had ready in all their 4K HDR 24hz glory!

How come? If you don’t mind me asking

Other apps that use the native player entirely (like Netflix, iTunes, etc...) have this enabled automatically in 11.2, but apps like Infuse need to implement it in a different way.

The APIs required are in beta right now, and unfortunately Apple doesn't allow apps with beta features to be submitted to the App Store.

Are you confident it can be done though? I used your app extensively for around a year but moved away from it when I got a 4k TV. It was no reflection on infuse, it was just that it was held back by the limitations of the hardware. I’ve kept a close eye on the app though as I always intended to move back should Apple sort their hardware out. Until the current beta, I didn’t think it was going to happen but Apple have actually surprised me for once!

Well obviously it depends on your content. Perhaps I underestimated how much HDR material is out there. Either way, I think the team at Firecore were just hit by bad timing by the beta release, which usually wouldn't have been an issue, but this time actually had a lot of interest from people, because of Apple actually listening to it's customers on a rare occasion.

It seems harsh to knock Infuse for not currently supporting a feature that isn't even in a final software release, even if a lot of us are using said beta. I'm sure they will offer some kind of solution when the official 11.2 tvOS hits.

Certainly not knocking infuse or the developers. It’s a great app and their activity in their community is commendable. Hopefully my most recent posts have made that clear. Also, despite not using the app since March due to the Apple TV not supporting 4k at that time, I’ve regularly promoted the software throughout this thread and elsewhere. There’s so much to like about infuse and I’m keen to start using again.
