I had a Gen1 MBA. It had terrible overheating problems. Replaced it with a Gen2, with a little help from Apple, and it mostly doesn't overheat. Much better, actually. Once once in a while, while working outside in direct sunlight, have I had an overheating problem with the Gen2.

I would guess that, given all the problems Apple had with overheating and the Gen1 models, that they would have designed it specifically to avoid those issues. Apple doesn't usually repeat the same mistakes.

That's good to hear. I love the form factor of the original and am considering one of the new ones, too. I can handle slightly slower performance for the tasks I do, but overheating gets annoying very fast.

man, now I know why everyone on the net thinks apple users are "douchebag hipsters"

If I looked like that, I'd kick my own ass

Size Matters

your girlfriend has been waiting YEARS for a mbp with a screen ONE INCH smaller than the current one?

i understand missing the 12" ... but holding out for a 14"?

your chick puts a lot of importance on some strange things, man.

maybe that's why she's your girlfriend? :p

Size does matter to most women whether they'll admit it or not.

I think the new macbook air is great, both on price and features, now although it does have a 1.4GHZ Core 2 Duo, They added an SSD, which will give faster random read and writes, which means everything will launch faster.. Your more likely to notice a speed bump with an SSD then a faster c2d processor, at least for day to day tasks.. obviously it won't fair very well with some video encoding or gaming..

Anyway I think its an improvement from the previous line.. Its pretty affordable..

If only $200-$300 less

If they were $700, I would probably get one, but $1000 is too much. I'm happy with my iPad.

I thought the exact same thing. If only it was $700 or even $799, I would sell my aluminum MacBook and get the 11" model in a heartbeat. My iMac does all of my real computing, so the MacBook is relegated to just surfing duties anyway.

I was very tempted to get the $1299 model, til I realised they were charging AU$1599 for it here, when last week the AU$ went past parity against the US$.

Ugh - sales taxes!!!!!

In the US the price is quoted excluding sales tax. In Oz the price includes GST.

So lets assume a sales tax of say 8% in the US (I have paid as much as 12%).

In US - base price -= $1299+8% = US$1402

Convert to Oz at around .98 = 1430.

Uplift is $150 - around 10% - much less than other price uplifts here in Oz...

Factor in the lower unit numbers being sold here and the higher per unit price that leads to - it is not a massive uplift.

You should also compare the price of virtually everything else you buy in Oz compared to other countries and see how expensive everything is.

Both devices are incredibly thin and light, but the 11.6" version stole the show. The machine is practically netbook-sized (but don't tell Steve Jobs or Tim Cook we said that, as they seem to have a seething hatred for netbooks)

Steve said "We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk." That's all a netbook is, a cheap laptop. Evidently size is not the problem. You just need a full sized keyboard and display on a small device with a great user experience, and the Air delivered. And it's not cheap :)
He actually gave a list why netbooks don't work. The 500 dollar thing was something he said afterwards in the Q&A session. The size of the screen and keyboard were some of the items on that list. On netbooks they were simply too small according Jobs. Now they're selling an 11.6" MacBook Air (although it does have a fullsized keyboard!). So yes, it IS size which is the problem in netbooks which makes the 11.6" version a bit odd (13,3" screen was the minimum according to Jobs iirc). I think it will be the 11.6" version that will be the most popular one (women can put it in their purse it seems).

Do you think that the "instant-on" feature will be enabled for MBs and MBPs that use SSDs?
You already can do something similar by using an app called smartsleep. I have the new mid 2010 MBP and put an ssd in it. Since the battery is integrated and I have an ssd I found smartsleep very useful as I could set it to sleep (aka standby) except when the power is too low (it hibernates (aka safe sleep, deep sleep, etc.) in that case). If the battery power gets too low I don't loose my work.

Im thinking about getting the 11.6" with the minimum standard options to replace my travel-pc which has a 10" screen with the exact same resolution. It is sad to see the backlit keyboard gone which I would have loved on night flights. But I think I can cope with it :).

I live in Sweden and I really want it right now so Im thinking about letting a friend of mine who is in New york for the next two weeks take one with him.

Im really happy to see Apple make a really small computer.

Backlit Keyboard Absence <sigh>

I can't deal with no backlit keyboard. No new MacBook Air for me :(

I have become so addicted to my backlit keyboard. I cannot buy a laptop without it. Frankly I'm not sure why Apple hasn't come out with it for their desktop keyboards. I'd immediately ditch my old keyboard and buy the new one.

And yeah, I know, there are 3rd party models. But I really love the sleek, tiny, aluminum keyboard for my iMac. Can't live without it on my MBA.

So, until the backlighting is added, there will be no upgrade for me.

I already have an SSD - it was an option on the original MacBook Air with a 1.8 Core 2 Duo. The performance is substandard even for light tasks. I don't see the new revisions very promising.

Putting a SSD in my Macbook Pro was the best investment I ever made. Boots up in seconds and apps launch in 2-3 seconds. I fire up the entire Adobe suite in about 5 seconds.

Awesome.

Is it possible to add another SSD into a MBP with already 7200 HDD inside? I'd have SSD for system and apps and HDD for media and files.

It's a problem typing in the dark without a backlit keyboard, huh?

Gee, some of us know how to find the home row and type without looking. I would think someone attending an event like that on behalf of a news organization or site should have basic note-taking skills. Apparently not.

yes it is possible. take out the optical drive and install a data doubler kit from OWC. You can then offload the os and app to that ssd drive and keep the hd for storage. thats what ive done and it work flawless.

Home Row

And I'm sure you can find the mute key, the brightness keys, the tilda key, the backlighting brightness keys, and several other obscure keys all by finding the home row too, eh?

:)

Looks very cool... To bad I can't justify purchasing either of them.

Please learn to enjoy the small things in life...

You can't justify purchasing something (what?), but you may drop three times as much in beer that you go pee two hours later, or smoke that much in a week, or.... You get the point, don't you?
