The problem is, no one discusses the reason 9/11 happened. It was, as military planners refer to it, "blowback" resulting from decades-long US international policies. You can't be the biggest bully on the block - attacking sovereign nations, assassinating opponents, overthrowing governments, rigging elections, and controlling the world's oil production by force or threat of force - and not expect to make some enemies. Americans need to take responsibility for the actions of their government abroad.

You might enjoy moving to North Korea, China, or Cuba if you have a problem with America.

I am not surprised.

I am disgusted.

I don't believe the denials.

Blaming one particular politician or party for this stuff seems futile. Both sides of American politics have done nothing but add to these powers forever, and ramped it up since 2001. To go a little 'Jurassic Park' for a second, history is littered with the U.S.A. doing things because it can, regardless of whether it should, for both good and ill.

If nothing else I hope this acts as a wake-up call to anyone who trusted the cloud too much. There are numerous legitimate reasons why you would not want any government snooping on your data.

The whole thing is quite sad IMHO. If the time and money spent by various governments to invade privacy and suspect everyone of everything was spent on making the world a more equal and fair place to live in I think we'd end up with no greater number of terror attacks, and a much nicer world as a bonus.

To all the gun hating liberals out there...this is why the only way you will take mine is "from my cold dead hands"!!!

You're going to shoot the NSA's computers? Please explain how exactly your gun protects you from the government. I hope you have depleted uranium shells, LOL.

Gun nuts... how embarrassing.

As if its ok to take personal information of non US people. I'm Australian and find that kind of statement to be typical arrogant American. No offense but that's how it sounds to a non US person.

Yes, but as an American I don't care if you find our behavior offensive, what are you or anyone else going to do about it?

As a Australian I think you should have a look at the awful laws Howard pushed through during his tenure, noting that we escaped the sedition clause that he tried to add. Prism is completely legal, the Australian laws are also legal just as bad.

So, in summary, try not to be a hypocrite when you're having a bout of righteous anger.

----------

Guns don't work without ammunition; that's why the government is buying all of it up.

What a clever and devious government! It's a good thing gun companies can use the profits from those sales to invest in more production and facilities to produce more bullets for sale or your theory would be crazy!

I was just about to post the same. I have no idea what went on, but the timing and Jobs' general beliefs on this matter lead me to suspect it's too coincidental. I'm sure the companies involved are getting something in return.

Well the tax hearing started with everyone professing their love for Apple then asking Mr. Cook how he would structure the tax code..

So tinfoil hats were not that far off.

The never are, the just headfirst down the slope.

]In all honestly I do not care if the gov't has access to my data[/B]... if your'e doing nothing wrong and not involved in any shady business why care? they can access and store all the data they want, do you think they have the man power/resources and time to go through it all? I highly doubt it...

That's a problem..

So if I understand the last statement, it means that PRISM can't spy on YOU (the U.S. Citizen), but it can spy on ME (a citizen of a foreign country using Apple & Google products).

Well, that's just great, I feel much better now!

When you look at post 9/11 America.

The TSA at airports, the DoHS using the Patriots Act like a mini police state, and now NSA snooping in cyber space also the total militarization of local police forces.

It's very difficult to believe that you were supposed to have WON the cold war.

am i the only one looking at the "powerpoint" slide and thinks its placed together by a two year old? Even down to the logo having a red background?

I think we can all agree that NSA places very little emphasis on visual design skills when recruiting. Then again maybe it's just a coverup... ;) If one happens to get hands on these "design masterpieces" they look like created by some crack head nazi created them to present their personal world domination plans.

By law NSA is not allowed to spy on US citizens. However, they are circumventing this by stating 51% of first target communication is between foreign nationals. However, after communication is flagged NSA searches everything from two hops from the source (regardless of source or nationality). If anything is found there are another two hops and so. Therefore, NSA can search anything and everything that they find necessary just by increasing the total number of searches.

Edit:

If you compare the 51% first contact search to US population and that to total world population you realize that NSA is very much targeting both US and foreign nationals. Based on that comparison one could assume that emphasis is on US communication.

welcome to the rise of fascism...

...most people seem site unaware of how the US government is slowly invading peoples privacy and the means of political dissent. Obama, amazingly may be even worse than Bush. He is certainly not the liberal many of us would have hoed for. I suggest that you try the following website of you are interested honest informed information on how the US is mutating.

www.counterpunch.org

This newsletter has a slight left bent but is very well regarded. it is edited by very well established journalists and has contributions from people who really know. Good luck to us all.
sorry for the bad news.

1. Don't panic.
2. Check whether any of your servers (or providers) is mirroring data to the US.
3. Don't do anything cloudy.
4. Search for alternatives.
5. Live on your life. For now.

Or

Just step 5.

I don't know why nobody up-voted this. I find it hilarious.:D

And they're just getting started. Soon they'll be iris scanning as part of the pre-employment process, and walking rhythm software to catalog the way you walk.

So whats everyone worried about? What do you have to hide??

That is not the point. Someone could have many things to hide but there's nothing wrong with that as long as it's not illegal or criminal. Arguments like yours make it 'fine' for any government to collect anything and everything about an individual even if this individual is a law abiding citizen with not even a parking ticket on his name. Why? Does it reduce the crime rate? Are same citizens better protected from crime? No. Mind Police and pre-crime...... It that what you really want? I don't.

oh please, did you guys really think they weren't doing that to begin with? I always suspected the US to screen everything (!) and have backdoors in all the software.

Doesn't change the fact that it's outrageous. I'm even more pissed of (being from europe) that the update states, that only non - US citizens outside the US are being spied on! Great!

Screw them, frankly!

I feel really sorry for the operative who's got the assignment to track my boring life.

Anyway, that this happens is quite obvious and I'm afraid that PRISM is just the tip of the iceberg. All those free, public, cloud based services are finally a rebranding of the Gestapo, but with voluntarily participation. Spooky.

All this spying on Americans in the name of national security to protect the citizens from foreign terrorism is just a smoke screen. The real enemy is you and me. The U.S. government is mapping out all the potential political dissidents so that when the dollar finally does fall, they'll already know where everyone is at.

On the lighter side, I guess at least if Apple is involved now then maybe they can move from Powerpoint to Keynote...! :p

Might as well bend over :| You should think about that next time you use Skype or anything that could be seen by those clowns. Freedom and freedom of will is the right of every person and not by a certain group of people.
