Yeah right! I do not believe their denial but that does not make me like Apple less. It is the government, they cannot say no :)

When Bush did it, Democrats screamed bloody murder and Republicans were silent, defensive, and accused opponents of lacking patriotism. Now Obama's doing it, and Republicans are screaming bloody murder, while Democrats are silent about the very same thing they screamed over.

Why do we have different standards for government when "our guy" is the one in office? It's ridiculous. "My guy" is as bad as "your guy". They both suck.

This isn't partisan .Both parties voted for this stuff by 99 %.

Any republican that complains is a hypocrite .

I blame both parties. President Obama and President Bush.

The denial doesn't really deny anything.

"We have never heard of PRISM. We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer data must get a court order."

If the NSA called the program something else , had a secret FISA court order and Apple provided a website instead of direct server access then the denial is still 100% accurate.

You can always say no to the government, you just need to be willing to deal with the consequences. When Bush was doing warrant less wiretaps one of the tescos said no and told the NSA to get a court order. There is a certain amount of protection from overt punishment since the whole thing is secret. Still a lot easier for companies to just toe the line , especially when everyone else is.

"and indicating that any data collection is limited to non-U.S. citizens located outside of the United States."

Oh, that's alright then.

/sarcasm.

Why would release cycle matter when all this is bound to be happening server side?

Wont make a scrap of difference when its added. Both iOS and OS X have always called home, and very regularly. Run Little Snitch on your mac and disable reporting - you'll be surprised to see that you mac still connects up to Apple servers several times an hour.

Does anybody really believe the government is only collecting information on non-citizens? Why the **** at this juncture should we take the NSA's word on anything?

The problem is, no one discusses the reason 9/11 happened. It was, as military planners refer to it, "blowback" resulting from decades-long US international policies. You can't be the biggest bully on the block - attacking sovereign nations, assassinating opponents, overthrowing governments, rigging elections, and controlling the world's oil production by force or threat of force - and not expect to make some enemies. Americans need to take responsibility for the actions of their government abroad.

Well said, and what's even worse is that they act all innocent about it and make it out that they are the victims.

Then they make stupid laws like these and enforce them on everyone, even if it's people out of their jurisdiction - Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot, those people who they are monitoring must be "threats" to the country.

They still go on about 9/11, yes it was tragic and many people were killed but there is thousands upon thousands of innocent people, whether they be man, woman or child, being killed, injured or hurt by famines, disease or warlords in Africa, in sweatshops in India, China and in developing countries or by the floods that are happening in Europe. Remember, all this is happening RIGHT NOW not 12 years ago.

I have a hard time believing the US Gov would really care about what I write to facebook or what I see on youtube.

So, to the person reading spying this post to MR from your spy (hopefully) Mac, have a nice day!

...and Obama oversaw the expansion of the program. I don't view this as a partisan issue.

Obama oversaw the expansion of the program? How do you know that? No, you do not know that one bit. This is a top secret program and you have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER what Bush was doing with the information and NO IDEA WHATSOEVER what Obama is doing with it. And not one news story or government person has said anything about the program being expanded or not expanded. You only "think" its expanded because you are just hearing about it now. You cannot just make up accusations to fit your political view.

Paranoia no; more like pragmatism. What solution would you suggest? Your argument is as shallow as the case of a smoker trying to tell you that smoking is somehow not that bad, because you're much more likely to die from smog and air pollution.

Ignoring the problem of terrorism is what I would call a perfect example of 'ignorance is bliss.'

Try to sell your argument of 'worrying about terrorism' as being paranoid, to the surviving relatives of those who died on 9/11, or to the relatives of those who died in the Federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, or Aurora in 2012, or Boston just recently, for that matter, not to mention those 26 (including 20 innocent children) who were gunned down at Sandy Hook in Newtown, CT. last December.

A comparison of the total number of people dying during such acts of terror, against the number of people being knifed or shot to death domestically, is a weak argument at best, especially in light of the potential number of casualties that could be inflicted during a successful terror strike. It's also of little consolation to the grief-stricken survivors.

Downplaying terrorism as paranoia, is where the real problem lies. It's time we had a frank discussion about this, rather than diminishing these acts, and continuing on as before, and burying our heads in the sand.

As I said in the part of my post, that you chose not to include, I have as much mistrust of the Fed as the next guy, and loathe this whole intel gathering of ordinary law abiding citizens as much as anyone, but these info gathering missions are simply a necessary evil, a choice of the lesser of two evils, and a must-have tool for the intelligence agencies charged with our protection, if they are to have a snowball's chance in hell, of being able to prevent future terrorism.

Give up trying to be the worlds policeman and trying to enforce western 'values' on others and there might be less terrorism in the first place. 9/11 was simply a response to US foreign policy. Simples.

Personally, I think this is an overreaction. There are millions of phone calls, millions of pieces of data being analyzed and most likely, its in the form of traffic analysis and not actually listening in on everybody which, given the millions of people and only a few hundred or thousand analysts, would be impossible.

Traffic analysis is used when you do not have code keys or otherwise cannot read the actual data. Done by computer now, it looks for patterns in communication that might be deemed suspicious. If suspicious patterns are found, the computers look for key words in the information, e.g., "bomb" or whatever, then they zero in on that traffic pattern. If it still scores "high", then an analyst, finally, might listen in.

I'm not giving an opinion to whether this is something we should be doing or not, but I also think its safe to say no one is listening in on you talking to your wife or grandma.

Its very possible that the NSA has a profile on pretty much every American and foreign national that have interacted with the US in anyway. I think this may just be the tip of the iceberg, it sounds like another good reason to switch to Linux, who knows what backdoors Microsoft and apple are giving the government.

Apple says the government doesn't have direct access to their servers, but they don't need direct access when Apple provides them with whatever they want.

PRE-COG ALERT

Have a nice day.

.

LOL. Except hat the word "bomb" wouldn't be enough to attract their attention. I would have to match a certain traffic pattern too, e.g., be on a "radical" website or something like that. So, the Feds still wouldn't be reading my messages.

Switch to Linux, Ha!

Even with Linux being open source and all the code "can" be peer reviewed. The people I know that code for a living and compile their own kernels and run distos like Gentoo when I ask how much of the code they have personally audited the answer is anywhere 1 to 5%. Not to mention all the other things they use like closed source video drivers.

Unfortunately, since computers much of the work, the feds will sometimes get wrong conclusions and bad analysis. Again, I am not defending the program and I would lean towards the side of "the gube'ment" NOT doing this, but I don't consider this to be the worst threat to our freedom. I'm more concerned about some of the draconian laws that states have been enacting in recent years.

To all the gun hating liberals out there...this is why the only way you will take mine is "from my cold dead hands"!!!

LMAO! :D oh my God, I don't know if you did this on purpose or not, but man, thanks for making my morning! I love how we shove the gun discussion in... anything really!

I am so happy for you that your gun is protecting your privacy against your iPhone

:D can't.stop.laughing!

Meanwhile, the government has the US Army, with tanks and the USAF with F-16's, and there is Goober, holding off the oncoming massive assault with a few AK's. Yeah. That'll work.

I don't know about you, but I keep my homegrown software code in my doomsday bunker in North Dakota. :D
