AirPlay 2 is amazing, its exactly what AirPlay should have been all along. This is exactly what I have always wanted. I can't wait for Sonos to update my speakers to include AirPlay 2 so I can directly control everything within iOS instead of having to go into the Sonos-app all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonos and what if offers. I replaced all my AirPlay (v1) speakers with Sonos and it gives me much better flexibility and much better speaker managements, grouping and multi-room.
But using Apple Music within the Sonos-app doesn't compare to using the actual app, not at all. And its rather fiddly to always have to use the Sonos-app for controls and the app itself is such a battery hog for no apparent reason. I'm currently testing AirPlay 2 to three of our rooms as all three have Apple TV's in them running tvOS 11.3 BETA1 and grouping and everything is so easy directly in iOS. When the Sonos-speakers get updated with support for AirPlay 2 I will basically never have to use the Sonos-app ever again for anything else other than setting up new speakers and firmware upgrades.
I notice when playing around with AirPlay 2 that it still seems to function in a "point-to-point" fashion. In other words when I AirPlay from Overcast or Apple Music from my phone to my Living Room Apple TV and Bedroom Apple TV I will get audio in both rooms etc.. It works great.
But if I receive a notification or anything that stops the playback, or if I simply disconnect the devices from the network the playback will stop. Apple Music will continue playing, and even change songs on a playlist but after 2 min it stops. Overcast will stop immediately.
But one thing I can do is control the playback on the Apple TV itself. If I open the "now playing" on the Apple TV I can use the Apple TV remote to pause and restart the song, and when looking on my phone it will change on the phone as well. There is no way to look at upcoming songs or playlists while AirPlaying, not even when AirPlaying for Apple Music.
As all of this feels somewhat disconnected, but hey its the very first BETA containing the feature it bring the question. How is it supposed to work?
Will AirPlay 2 still be a strictly point-to-point connection. So even with AirPlay 2 you are still streaming from your local devices to the AirPlay receiver or will it gain a Sonos and Chromecast Audio like feature where AirPlay 2 itself will be able to just be told what to play and it will be able to stream it directly from the web by itself?
The major downside with it only being point-to-point is how the playback will get interrupted as soon as you do something else on your phone, or when you move out of range of your network connection, answer a phone call etc.. Its also far less ideal in "party situations" as you can simply have people adding music to a queue.
