This has to be the worst beta. Random lockup’s are now happening multiple times an hour. Debating on downgrading
Interesting. That doesn't seem to be the general consensus here. What device? Seems to be the best iOS 11 version to date on iP6s. Perhaps a reinstall may help or a reset all settings.

Why would they want to disable WIFI calling unless a weak cell signal is detected? The choice of using WIFI or cell signal should be an individual choice not an Apple choice.

Why would they want to disable WIFI calling unless a weak cell signal is detected? The choice of using WIFI are cell signal should be an individual choice not an Apple choice.
I see you're a newbie here. Are you also a newbie to the Apple world? Individual choice isn't the Apple way.

If they made a choice of everything people come here saying should be a choice iOS would be much more of a convoluted mess than it already is. Android is the way to go if you like choice.

Dunno but its been that way for ATT and Verizon since the beginning. Also I believe this is a carrier choice not Apple.

It was not that way with Sprint or T-Mobile and this is stated in the release notes for 11.3. I have a strong WIFI network at home and prefer making calls over WIFI versus cell.

I started with the iPhone 5 when they came out and currently have an iPhone 8. I actually removed 11.3 from my phone when I noticed WIFI calling was disabled unless there is a weak cell signal. Activating WIFI calling has been, up until now, a user's choice.

More like a carrier choice.
Just started when I installed 11.3 and it states as much in the release notes for 11.3.

Having it enabled has always been a choice. When the phone switches from cellular to Wifi calling, as far as I remember, has always been based on cellular signal strength.

iOS 11.3 also brought a new carrier version, which is responsible for the change. These carrier updates are mainly done by the carrier, with oversight and help from Apple. Also, nowhere in the release notes does it mention anything regarding this issue.

iPhone 7 Intel modem firmware updated to 2.03.05.
T-Mobile carrier version updated to 31.5.4
Added to Wiki
Did you note WIFI calling was disabled except when a weak cell signal is detected? I also have T-Mobile with an iPhone 8.

1: The point of wifi calling is to assist when there is low or weak cell service. Thats was the whole premise of it becoming a thing. Also Verizon states this as the reason:

"Once you set up Wi-Fi Calling, you’ll make Wi-Fi calls like you’d make traditional voice calls. In order to provide you with the most reliable experience, calls will use the cellular network when available. If you’re using an Android device, then you can change the preferred network when traveling internationally. For Android devices, you’ll see a Wi-Fi Calling icon similar to this:
wifi-calling-icon.png
when your call is over a Wi-Fi network. If you have iPhone, you’ll see "VZW Wi-Fi" in your status bar."

2: I stated ATT and Verizon. Apparently this changed with T-Mobile in this beta as I am understanding it.

3: The release notes make no mention of wifi calling. Not sure where you got that info.

My bad, I quoted from Banglazed's post on the subject. You are 100% correct this is not in the release notes.

Ah ok no worries. That is the wiki post. (Post #1) Anyone with enough posts can edit and add to that as they see changes and such. So its a community effort on that one. And as stated, apparently some T-Mobile users have seen this behavior change since previous versions. Perhaps because their network has grown now and has more coverage?? Who knows.

Just enable flight mode when you are at home? might save you some battery too

2hours 41 usage
9 hours 12 standby

down to 83% battery.

8h 45m usage
9h 44m standby

The phone has only been off of the charger for 9 hours and 45 minutes, and I'm at 37%. Granted, I have used it a bit more since I got 11.3 on here, but it does feel like the battery isn't as strong vs 11.2.5.

ihonda, as above advice, did you install OTA or using iTunes and IPSW file? I find the IPSW method better

Help. I searched Google and the Apple beta links and couldn’t find a way to use iTunes versus OTA unless you were a developer. It seemed like public beta testers can only do OTA but as someone that rarely ever uses iTunes to restore images I could be missing something obvious.

I was hoping after the beta profile was installed I can “check updates” in iTunes and do the beta installs that way but no. Part of me wants to figure this out because the 2 gig install of the beta image isn’t getting deleted from “other storage”. I know this because three phones now have over 2 gigs more space used right after the updates. That is the size of the beta footprint. I am thinking the iTunes route would avoid this but I could be wrong. Thanks in advance.

The beta profile only allows you to OTA update on the device. To update using iTunes, you will need to download the ISPW beta firmware by holding down Shift on PC or Option on Mac then click "Check for Updates" to allow you to select that firmware to update. You can go into Settings>General>iPhone Storage to delete any downloaded software update on the device. It could be possible its under Others but again plenty of junks like caches could be stored too.

To all the complainers about the changes to WiFi calling, try using it on a college campus and you’ll see that preferring a cell signal over the unusable WiFi your phone just wont let go of is the better option.

Sorry @ErikGrim but you are even answering my question. Why don’t you let People answer that might have a easier solucion.
Seems those are your options. One user states he did the reset as mentioned by @ErikGrim but the release notes from Apple states the following so the other option of waiting until the next beta seems to be the real fix.

Notes and Known Issues
3rd Party Apps
New Issues
• Skype may crash on launch or after sign-in. (36501124)

This first beta is REALLY making Apple look bad. They claim their throttling was built in to protect people from automatic shutdowns resulting in data loss but I haven't read a single report of that happening. All I'm seeing is talk of how fast and smooth these older devices are while also seeing an improvement in battery life.

I'd like to know who to thank for finding the evidence and busting Apple out on that crap.
they always get caught and put up with all that
[doublepost=1517362135][/doublepost]running ios 11.3 beta 1 on iphone 6 feels smoother and faster but more works needs to be done to achieve that stability and i haven't had any unexpected restart or shutdowns since they said apple turned off the throttling in this beta version don't know how true that is yet or maybe they reduced the throttling by some amount since apple don't come out pure with us customers anymore
