I am curious to know if anyone else is having CarPlay issues as it relates to playing music. Before ios11, everything was working fine. With ios11, though, my music isn’t playing under “Browse” or “Radio.” I unpaired it and paired it again with no luck. I am wondering if others are experiencing similar issues. It may be an Apple Music issue too, but I haven’t seen any posts.

I had a lot carplay issues with my old pioneer carplay... i think they were mostly because of a fidgety lightning cable. ive now switched to alpine wireless carplay and it seems to work way better... the pioneer use to have a way slow siri response as well.... alpine is instant.

Am having numerous problems. Doesn’t connect first time. Repeat song button disappeared. When I press play button pause button appears but songs do not play. Have to go to general settings CarPlay and forget this car happens 50% of the time to get it to work. Have to disconnect reconnect often. Screen goes black/blank when using maps and start music. A big mess.

So many issues with CarPlay since ios 11. Doesn't connect first time. Song repeat button disappeared. When I push play button pause button appears on screen but no sound. Have to go to general settings CARPLAY forget this car to get it to work. Using maps and going to music, screen goes black/blank. Incoming text message plays but no sound. Was working perfectly before update. Surprised but not really that this product is so poorly updated. Actually very dangerous to use in its current form.

Same issue for me on my 2017 Nissan Maxima. CarPlay launches, and I can use Maps and the Apple Music app, however, when I try to use Pandora, iHeart, or the Amazon music app, it just hangs. No audio whatsoever :-( I also get the "incompatible device" error several times... I guess I'll try to revert back to iOS 10.x... Bummer...

I have a 2017 Nissan Maxima SR with some of the same issues. I have read on this forum that a couple of folks have contacted Nissan on this and based on the posts from these folks, Nissan is working on an update that will resolve these issues. I have yet to hear of any further updates regarding the Nissan update.

Apple certainly cannot blame the auto manufacturer. I had all of these problems start with iOS11.

The problem exists in my 2015 Ford with the My Ford Touch system and also in my 2018 Ford with the Sync 3 system.

Two different systems from two different software vendors. Apple iOS is the problem here.

How long do we have to wait for it to be fixed?

After updating to iOS 11, I could not get CarPlay to work when the USB was connected to the phone. I could connect via Bluetooth and I could also play music via bluetooth or the USB cable. I just could not get CarPlay to work. I have a 2017 XT5. I kept getting the message that there was no USB device plugged in. Lo and behold, I fixed the issue today. I went to the home screen on the XT5 and opened up the settings. Under settings, was a category for CarPlay. When I opened this up, there were two options: 1) Turn CarPlay On/Off and 2) Manage Devices. CarPlay was turned on. I went into Manage Devices. Here is where the problem was. There were two iPhones listed and neither were listed as Active. I deleted the two devices from the car. Then I plugged the USB cable into the phone and the car. I was able to add the phone back to the car as well as allow CarPlay to access the phone while locked. This worked. It seems as though the update to iOS 11 made the phone look like a new/different device. By simply deleting the old entries and re-adding the phone, I solved the problem.

Same problem here. 2017 MB GLA250. It was working perfectly until iOS 11. Now the car doesn't even know when the phone was plugged in.

If your car has a setting to add/delete devices to CarPlay, then I suggest deleting your phone from the car's memory and re-adding it. That is what worked for me.

Interesting. Seems to be fine here on my 2017 Lincoln MKX with SYNC 3. I know there’s supposed to be a SYNC3 update coming to improve CarPlay responsiveness, and to stop it from returning to FM radio when you disconnect your iPhone.

Returns to whatever source I had active before I plugged in when I unplug in my 2017 Mustang.

Last week, I drove a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox for a week (rental). It had CarPlay, the only noticeable issue I could find was that EVERYTIME Apple Maps gave me a direction, it would I kick me out of the radio, and I would have to manually use the touch screen to turn the radio back out, outside of the CarPlay screen. Luckily I was in Montana, and everything seems 100 miles away there, with a lovely 80MPH speed limit.

I was connected with USB, I did not bother trying to connect with Bluetooth, since it was a rental.

My carplay works great with my ‘17 Silverado via both USB and Bluetooth on ip7+ iOS 11. no problems what so ever. Only thing I don’t like w/ Bluetooth is the Album artwork doesn’t display, but think this is more on Chevy’s end (software/unit) than Apple

It's definitely a hit or miss with our MKX's. But I wasn't really referring to when we disconnect our iPhone's. I should've worded it differently. It's more about the source it returns to after you restart the car without an iPhone connected, after shutting the car down with CarPlay connected. It seems to return to AM or FM radio in both of our MKX's and our Escape. When we start the car without connecting an iPhone, it will just sit silently until it gives up and just goes to AM or FM.

Supposedly, SYNC 3 v3.0 will remember your last source before CarPlay, and return to it if you shut the car down with CarPlay connected, and start it later without a CarPlay device.

It's not really a critical issue, but last I talked to Concierge, they seemed aware and told me a fix is coming with no eta. It'd be a nice improvement for the few times I hop in the car without plugging CarPlay in (although that's pretty rare nowadays since I absolutely love the CarPlay interface). It's easily worked around by just tapping Audio -> Source -> Sirius/etc while it's in the "waiting for CarPlay" phase. But any ease-of-use improvement is always welcome! :)

I’ll test it tomorrow but it’s been returning to Sirius (as I had it set to, while the usual post purchase trial is still running) without an issue if or until I plug it in so far, even if I turn it off still plugged and in with CarPlay enabled. I’ll try a few stop/start/open door/close door/lock cycles with different sources. Maybe we can narrow it down to a setting or something. I did check earlier when I replied and I’m on Sync3 v2.2 too.

Interesting! Let me know how you make out! It's really not a concern, and I'm not smashing my head against the steering wheel. Some users over on the Focus RS forum said the 3.0 update resolves it, so maybe it's only affecting some SYNC 3 modules, but it looks like they've made some change to improve it. When I chatted them, they said the vehicle team was aware of the issue, and it would be fixed. Now it's just up in the air when the official v3.0 will actually make its way to the public.

My experience with car audio systems, including those with carplay, the oem system in the car is usually the cause of problems. Whether I use carplay or not, my Ford Escape occasionally wont connect to any bluetooth device, requiring a reset. Though, the last update caused a noticeable decrease in the occurrence of this error. I’m not saying ios is never at fault, but that 90-99% of the time (depending on make/model) it’s the car.

I wanted to add this update regarding CarPlay on my 2017 Nissan Maxima SR which I posted in the "iOS 11.1 Beta 2 Bug Fixes, Changes and Improvements" thread. Sorry to double post, but I noticed a few Maxima owners with the same issue and maybe this would be of some benefit.

I couldn't help myself, took the plunge and upgraded to 11.1PB2 last night. I am not charging at all today and letting my battery drain to see how long it lasts in total. But after two hours, I am still on 99%. Good sign as this was about the same of 10.3.3.

Additionally, I noticed this morning during my 30 minute commute, while using CarPlay (USB connected) in my 2017 Nissan Maxima, my IP7+ battery is no longer draining and getting warm/hot as it did on 11.0.x. I feel pretty confident that the battery drain and heating issue are/were related to using CarPlay as I did not have this in any other scenario on 11.0.x builds. I hope it is true and the CarPlay issue is resolved too.

I would also add that I did not previously have or currently have the connection issues that some of us have had with the Maxima and CarPlay, so I cannot comment on any status change for that.

I have a hard time absolving Apple of issues with CarPlay. The main objective was to provide an interface that was compatible with Apple products. This is THEIR product.

I could understand if it was another company's audio system...but CarPlay compatibility should be part of every iOS testing cycle.

Interesting thread! I did some testing yesterday and mine seems to be well behaved for the most part. Volume level is pretty consistent between sources on plug/unplug. The only gremlin I really have is occasionally the phone is not recognized when plugged in, maybe 1 in 20 times. A quick replug does the trick.

Looking forward to the goodies v3 may bring (though not to the bugs it inevitably will. Hands free Siri got totally broken by the last and only update to my previous Fusion!).

I hear ya! Hopefully extensive testing is why we are both sitting on 2.2 ;). Probably wishful thinking, haha.

Thanks for testing on your end! Always helps to hear all experiences.

I'm running iOS 11.0.2 on an iPhone 8 using CarPlay on an Alpine iLX-107 (the first wireless CarPlay stereo).

The only thing I'm noticing is occasionally the screen will be black but my music is playing. If I hit the input button it will go to the main screen and I can select Music and see the screen again.

I've looked on the Alpine site for a firmware update and haven't found anything. I guess I should be happy this is all I'm seeing compared to some of the other posts.

The thing is, the hardware which carplay operates on in cars is not Apple hardware. Each automaker has their own hardware which carplay operates on. I’m fairly certain Apple tests carplay but I do not expect them to test it on every make/model which supports carplay. Also, keep in mind that a particular make/model that supports carplay could have various hardware and software across different years. I think Apple has done a good job with carplay considering the variables.

I don’t have this issue on 2016 Ford Escape oem system.
