this is the reason for the existence of public beta testing, in the past only developers had access to beta software and the installation was recommended only for new api testing, now all the guys are excited to try preview software and apple is happy to save money for internal testing.
You are missing my point. Actually you are proving my point inadvertently as to why they should not release a beta before taking a 10 day holiday.

Why not? It is a serious News site about apple products
Because it’s all rumors. Apple keeps all of that tight lipped.

my mistake to quote you with that post.

in relation to your post I’ve already said that if someone installs beta software has to expect that something can go wrong

Yes. You don’t need to tell me that. I’m fully aware. It does not change the fact, that like I said yesterday, it is a risk for Apple to do this. That’s probably why it has never happened before.

Installing a beta is a risk of annoying bugs. Not a catastrophic bug that does not allow you to make a phone call. They are not even in the same bug category.

How do you explain when public releases have bricked phones or disabled cellular? That’s not a risk of installing a beta. Any software release can have an inadvertent consequence. It has happened in the past, and will most likely happen again in the future. No release, whether public or beta, should be seeded the day before a 10 day holiday. That’s just plain common sense.

All software contains bugs. Some bugs are worse that others... but beta software often contains serious bugs that can affect performance and/or cause data issues and loss. It's pretty darn certain that beta software will go sideways at some point... but your point stands - if you put the beta on your daily driver device, be prepared for problems.

Unfortunately, many see "beta" software as an opportunity to get the newest version on your phone to show off to your friends. That is a dangerous proposition, IMO, as many are unprepared to be able to successfully recover.

While I agree with most of your post, performance issues or losing data is not the same thing as not being able to make a phone call. I lose some data, sure that sucks, but I have a backup. Not being able to open the phone app is a catastrophe waiting to happen. God forbid a life threatening situation. That’s not an acceptable bug anyone should tolerate or make excuses for. Beta or not.

Perhaps b4 was released because of the phone app issues introduced Monday in b3 and they didn't want to leave that hanging for a week. BTW the issue wasn't that one could not make phone calls, it was Visual Voicemail was going AWOL and not appearing. The phone app still worked. And b4 seems to have solved it (once folks did the airplane mode toggle if needed). Also there is always the option to restore to the release version in the event of some major issue with the beta so not really that big a deal.

From what I recall from scjr, after installing he could no longer open his phone app.

That’s why it’s a beta (not for production or mission-critical use). And that’s why I’m not too crazy about having a public beta because some users just don’t know what they’re getting themselves into.

Or wait to release the public beta a day later (like they used to) in case a bug like the phone one pops up.

I know its a long shot, but it would be nice if they put out beta 5 today considering some of the problems with beta 3 and 4.

I’m hoping for 11.2 to get released, but with it being a holiday week, they might not want to put such a big update out to the public. Apple employees want to take a break too. But still, maybe it could be good to get Apple Pay Cash in the hands of consumers before Black Friday.

The only 11.2 released this week would be a beta if anything at all. Still too many bugs to iron out before a final is released.

Beta 4 is still 100% a beta build, meaning we need at least one more beta seeded before a public release is even possible.

I take it at this point no one reads the thread? How difficult is it to pay even the most basic attention and read the last page before posting? As has been said many times - Apple corporate is basically shut down this week...I wouldn't expect a thing.

I agree with your point, but a lot of these are coming from people I've not seen on here before. That's the problem with this thread continuing through the whole iOS 11 product cycle: its pushing 4000 posts and 159 pages. I don't blame someone new for not reading the whole thing. That said, it doesn't hurt to read the last 2-3 pages before posting!
