Sometimes I can pickup and it will unlock without finishing the animation like before but more often than not it will show the full animation.

Same for me on my X since iOS 12.1. Sometimes there is no (lock symbole)animation and it unlock extremly fast. But in most cases there is the normal animation.

btw. i have the feeling that the animation cost a lot of time to unlock….

Same here! I just updated my iPhone Xs Max to 12.1 and already noticed that FaceId is noticeably slower than it was on 12.0.1. I think I'll go back to 12.0.1 where the unlock was almost instantaneous every time.

I wonder why they slowed it or maybe a bug

I just upgraded my X to a XS Max on Sunday, the Face ID was noticeably faster. I updated my XS Max to 12.1 yesterday and I would say the Face ID is the same speed that my X was, just a beat slower than before the update.

The change Apple made is this:
First try is as quick as before.
Second try (and later) has a delay with an extra animation on the unlock icon. Second try is also delayed by a message on top of screen saying that you must pull the screen up to activate a new try to face unlock.

In your case the phone has probably already tried to unlock when you actually want to unlock it and hence the delay.

I don’t like this but I think it’s intentional by Apple. It could be that a lot of phones was unintionally unlocked on 12.0 and 12.0.1 just by doing other things than actually wanting to unlock the phone since it did several tries before triggering a message to pull the screen up to activate a new try to unlock with Face ID. It happened to me several times when cleaning my screen. Face ID was so fast the screen unintentionally unlocked when I cleaned the screen—but I loved it!

This is not my case.
With the phone in my hands, phone in standby, the first unlock attempt takes longer than before updating. Period.
We are not talking about an abysmal difference with a much lower unlock speed, but the difference is still sufficiently visible being used to previous instant unlocking!

I’ll just get over it and wait for a fix to be released asap...let’s hope so!!!

I take that back its gone slow again, don't understand, my girlfriends phone xs is much faster, I think my phone needs replacing

Having this issue too. After the first "fail" It wants me to swipe to unlock unless I turn off screen and back on again. Seems less consistent

Sometimes mine just shows the lock unlocking, other times when its slower it shows the circle unlocking animation like when you use it in Apple Pay. Never saw that on 11

I have the same issue.
iPhone XS here.

After 12.1 face unlock is quite slow (compared to previous versions).

I hope it will be fixed soon

Its upsetting even in 12.1.1 its slow, i thought the whole idea of ios 12 was fast speed and less bugs its starting to be like ios 11 lte bugs major issues now speed issues

I can see very few people complain about this bug and I'm a bit worried about it.
The difference in speed compared to previous versions is noticeable.

I cant understand others saying its the same

Mine has been noticiably slower since 12.1. Part of me feels like I should update from 12.1 to beta 5 and remove all beta profiles. Beta 5 felt the smoothest of anything I've been on so far.

Compared my XS on 12.1 to my girlfriend’s on 12.0.1. They are identical in terms of unlocking speed.

Maybe they will stop developing new features for iOS 13 and focus on speed, bugfixes aso again... :-/

Still so many inconsistencies. Like the trashcan on Photo app jump up/down, if you switch between portrait/landscape. Reading position in Safari also jumping when switching orientation, or photos partly disappearing off to the side in Photo app. Or menues never in the same place, from app to app. Things like that used to be the power of iOS, now they don’t care anymore. I thought fixing that was what iOS 12 was all about... And now slowing bugs are already starting to reappear.

The reason why you dan9700 always are fighting your iPhone could very well be, that you are more observant than most. They never notice the issues, that you see in an instant.

Still, if you are having so many issues that you consider replacing your iPhone, try a backup first and then flash a firmware without reinstalling the backup. See how it performs on a clean setup. Then you will at least take local software issues out of the equation, without the hassle of replacing your iPhone.

Oh, and the first thing I noticed after flashing 12.1 Release, was slower unlock...
