It looks like iOS 12.1.2 (16C101) released this week is not the final release of iOS 12.1.2 (16D5024a) beta 1 of last week but the bug fix on iOS 12.1.1 (16C50) release. It can be seen that released iOS 12.1.2 is branched for C release which is part of 12.1.1.

It looks like Qualcomm patent issue pushed Apple to release software in rush. Hence, today's beta iOS 12.1.3 (16D5032a) beta 1 is like iOS 12.1.2 beta 2 and labeled as beta 2. They are both branched for D release.

That's basically what has become the assumption when 12.1.2 was publicly released.

12.1.3 beta 2 profile is now available in the developer portal for those who couldn't install the beta previously.

Expect the unexpected...more and more these days (especially with all these patent scuffles and rulings it seems).

I think they just added the animation for closing apps for China which was in 12.1.3 in this 11.1.2 update and that's it.

I wonder, if someone hasn't installed the earlier iOS 12.1.2 update and now goes to update OTA would they get the newer build or the previous one?

Surely it will come to OTA since 99% of people do that.
No it won’t. This is no different than 9.2.1 and 10.2.x. When the version gets re-released you must do the full installer. There will not be an OTA for this new build.

If this build was so important that 12.1.2 people needed to update, they would have pushed it out as 12.1.3.

I assumed it was relating to some bricking. My 6S came close to completing the update before iTunes encounter an error. I had to unplug but the update completed fine though.

That’s usually why these re-releases occur. There is no need to update if you are already on 12.1.2. It’s a 3 point build difference. With the same version number. Clearly Apple doesn’t find it necessary to update.

I’m still on 12.1.1, is there a point to do an OTA update to 12.1.2? Did they just fix some sort of an esim bug? Because if that’s all they changed then I could care less and won’t update

There is. I got it for my iPhone X which doesn´t support the eSim.

The OTA was over 100MB from 12.1.1 to 12.1.2. I’m sure there are other behind the scene changes than just the eSIM fix. Could be shuffling code around for 12.2 as well.
