Something small but great I've noticed on my HomePod since updating: I have a morning Apple Music playlist set as an alarm, and previously it'd just play the same songs all the time even though I added a bunch more, they'd just never get played.

This morning after updating the HomePod to iOS 14.5 I noticed it playing all the new music I've added. There's definitely been improvements in the shuffle algorithm. Not sure yet if this is an Apple Music thing or a HomePod thing but either way I'm happy.

IOS 14.5 allow you to unlock your phone (as long as you are wearing apple watch and its unlock) while wearing your mask which is convenient.

However, if another person pick up your phone it will similarly unlock.

So you have to weigh the pro and con between privacy and convenient.

I was expecting Apple to do better. I was expecting the phone to remain locked when someone handle my phone and unlock only when I handle it.

Maybe my expectation of Apple was too high?

I’m sorry what? Just how is it meant to know who is picking it up? I would suggest your expectations of Apple are completely unreasonable, not too high.

If the phone unlocks you get a notification on the watch along with taptic feedback and it allows you to lock the phone directly and immediately from the watch. The phone will no longer be able to be unlocked by the watch anymore until the passcode is entered on the phone. If someone sitting next to you can pickup your phone and try to get into it without you noticing right away, I'd say punching them in the face is the proper response.

The horrendous typing lag in Notes is STILL THERE. Do they even use their own software?

Not sure what's changed, but mask unlock used to work fairly well on the 14.5 betas. It hasn't worked at all for me on the GA release.

Edit: working now. Noticed it wasn't turned on on my phone, but was on the watch. 🤦‍♂️

I’m still having the Notifications issue where I don’t get any notifications in various apps that aren’t apple’s. Did anyone else still have those issues on 14.5?

Anyone who has the Verizon app with the wizard does your wizard ever update anymore? Mine has been stuck on xx% data used for who knows how long now and that is different than the app is reporting.

[Edit] Apparently the app is jacked also because it shows two different data usage values in two different places. o_O Perhaps its not 14.5 ready.......

Two questions, please:

1) Does iOS 14.5 require that your Mac be running Big Sur if you are going to connect the iPhone and Mac together via USB cable for transferring data?

2) Does this also apply to the Image Capture app on the Mac?

My iMac is still on High Sierra. I have no intention to ever install anything newer than Mojave on this Mac.

If I install iOS 14.5 on my iPhone Xs, will I still be able to use Image Capture to transfer photos from my iPhone to my Mac?

Mark

I’ve had iOS 14.5 beta since mid-Feb and never had an issue with “Unlock with Apple Watch” setting on my 12 Pro Max. Did a DFU install and restore from a backup, and I can’t turn on that feature anymore. Fails with a cannot communicate with watch error. So frustrating! Watch otherwise works fine.

For years, I’ve been wanting album release dates to show up along with the track and artist in on the lock screen or now playing screen. I didn’t like having to dig down to the bottom of the album page to find it. OK, Apple added the release day (in addition to the already existing year), but that’s not really an improvement for me.

iTunes will prompt for an update to the MobileDevice framework for compatibility with 14.5. It does on Mojave, so Big Sur is not explicitly required.

That support doc addresses 10.11 or later, which implies that 10.13 should be ok, as long as the framework is updated.

To verify, do a version check with iTunes, Download Only the update .ipsw file, and then manually ask it to Update, and verify that it appears without protesting, or throwing up an error. It's a big download, but if you do decide to update, 14.5 is already at hand.

Image Capture really acts like more of a specialized app that interacts only with the media directory on the device, presenting the raw files with the human-readable names, and copying/deleting as desired. Not on the same level as what iTunes does.

Macs will always ignore iOS devices' file systems and require an app like iTunes to interact with a device in the pretty, sanctioned fashion.

But plug one into a PC, and they treat them as mass storage devices, and can read the raw file system, allowing manual manipulation of the media directory contents. That's basically what IC does, and insulates the user from the nitty gritty.

Unfortunately, Apple is less than clear about the Mac system requirements for each iOS version, but in practice, has been pretty flexible about keeping older versions functional with newer versions of iOS.

Updated the wiki post OP for giffgaff 46.0. Since it's an O2 MVNO I'd be curious to see if O2-UK has updated to the same version. Anyone on O2-UK wanna check?

Am I the only one with this issue? Driving me nuts. I reinstalled iOS and WatchOS numerous times and tried everything. It was a simple toggle in feb when I was on beta!

Anyone else’s phone getting warm while using Safari since installing 14.5? 98% of my daily browsing is done on my XS, and I had no issue on 14.4.2. Since updating to 14.5, my phone gets noticeably warm on the back after a few minutes of using Safari (browsing MaxRumors and the like).

Explain please one thing with unlocking iPhone with FaceID while wearing mask. For example my iPhone was stolen in bus and thief immediately unlocked it while wearing mask. I have push on my Apple Watch and can lock my phone back. But if I for some reason don't lock it right away, low my hand, so this notification will be lost forever? Can I lock my iPhone with Apple Watch from settings for example?

Yes, I had the same issue on my XS max iOS 14.5. My iPhone kept getting extremely warm (I can feel the heat through the screen) on all the applications I use not just Safari with light use and the battery was draining like crazy (I even tried to do a clean install via iTunes) but my phone kept getting warm and the battery life is poor. So, I decided to downgrade to iOS 14.4.2 and now my phone does not get warm and battery life is decent I easily get 7:30 to 8 hours of SOT.

There has been several reports of poor battery life on 14.5. Some say it’s indexing, could be, hard to say. One thing for sure though, if the phone is warm, there are only two components causing it. Either the battery itself, or the processor. Now, it could be a runaway process, or something similar using CPU cycles. This will itself consume power, leading to what could appear as a “drain” on the battery. See how it goes after several days to see if it continues.

Well, in my case I have installed iOS 14.5 RC since the release day and gave it 3 days to settle but my phone kept getting warm. Keep in mind that the phone gets warm when I’m in an application and not when the phone in idle. So, I can only assume that there is an issue with the update (at least for me).

Reading all your reports, I guess I’m staying at 14.4.2 on my iPad 8 (A12) my iPad Pro 2018 (A12X) and my iPhone (A11). I know iOS 14.5 introduced a lot of new features and privacy stuff, but my devices work great on 14.4.2, so maybe I’ll update them with the last version of iOS 14 this summer, iOS 14.7 or so.

Thank you, everyone, for your reports!

Yeah, my XS was running as close to "perfectly" as can really be achieved on 14.4.2; I was getting great battery life, and wasn't experiencing any sort of bugs or issues of any significance. Normally, I am on the "update as soon as available" train, but things were running so well I was hesitant to update, and I sort of wish I had listened to my gut. I had been following this thread since the beginning and don't remember seeing any reports of phones heating up like I'm seeing now. Most of the issues that people were discussing were folks with the same longstanding issues that have spanned several versions/builds and a few that appeared to be one-offs. I don't remember seeing any reports of phones heating up like mine now is throughout the beta cycle.

Because my wife is a recent iPhone convert who is still getting aquatinted with the platform, she is a bit adverse to updates, so I always install them first to be the 'guinea pig' and make sure there aren't any showstopper issues since I enjoy messing with my devices and have been a long time beta participant. I was hopeful that 14.5 would keep up the good work of 14.4.2, as I just got my wife an Apple Watch that I'll be giving her for our anniversary soon to replace her dying Fitbit and know that mask unlock would be huge for her since she wears one all day at work. Maybe we'll see a 14.5.1 with a fix before then? 🤞
