Well, in my case I have installed iOS 14.5 RC since the release day and gave it 3 days to settle but my phone kept getting warm. Keep in mind that the phone gets warm when I’m in an application and not when the phone in idle. So, I can only assume that there is an issue with the update (at least for me).
Glad to hear it is only when usage is involved and not when idle. That is better than it could be. With that said, I still think something introduced with this update is to blame. Personally, I am not updating yet. Thought of rolling back while you can?

Yes, I had the same issue on my XS max iOS 14.5. My iPhone kept getting extremely warm (I can feel the heat through the screen) on all the applications I use not just Safari with light use and the battery was draining like crazy (I even tried to do a clean install via iTunes) but my phone kept getting warm and the battery life is poor. So, I decided to downgrade to iOS 14.4.2 and now my phone does not get warm and battery life is decent I easily get 7:30 to 8 hours of SOT.
I installed on Tuesday, the day after the big rush, and so far Safari seems to be the culprit on my phone; I haven't noticed it heating up in other applications, however Safari has been the majority of my use since I updated. I've had conversations in both Messages and WhatsApp and didn't notice any heating there, though neither were very long conversations. Most of my other app usage is short, incidental things (checking weather forecast, syncing Fitbit, checking security cameras, creating/completing reminders and calendar appointments and other things that are done for <5 mins). It would likely take a week or more of my normal usage to know for sure if other apps caused the same, but I'm debating whether to roll back to 14.4.2 while that window is open, or jump forward to the 14.6 beta and just keep it moving forward.

Edit: Fixing Tpyos ;)

I’d revert to iOS 14.4.2 while you still can. I wanted to keep the IPSW files but I formatted my Mac and forgot the files there so... I’m staying on 14.4.2 and I know there’s a web with the files, but I prefer having them downloaded from Apple itself.

Keep in mind that, most probably, Apple will stop signing iOS 14.4.2 on Monday

14.5 is running a lot faster and smoother on my iPhone and iPad, only letdown is green tint is still happening on my 12 pro max.
I had an Air 2 spit up on me. It had some kind of display issue that seem to quench one of the primaries (probably red), leaving the screen with a greenish tint and severe color distortion. Everything worked fine, but it was painful to look at. You may have to replace the phone.

Optimized battery charging stopped working for me on both my iPhones Mini after installing 14.5. I’ve found a topic on Reddit mentioning same behavior. Could you please guys check how is yours ?

Well you don't really have to worry about taxes if you're rich. Jokes aside that are actually truth, I feel skittish updating, battery is doing great now. Temped for the security patches.

XS running iOS 13, what do you guys think. Any XS owners?

No issues so far for me with XS...

Reading all your reports, I guess I’m staying at 14.4.2 on my iPad 8 (A12) my iPad Pro 2018 (A12X) and my iPhone (A11). I know iOS 14.5 introduced a lot of new features and privacy stuff, but my devices work great on 14.4.2, so maybe I’ll update them with the last version of iOS 14 this summer, iOS 14.7 or so.

Thank you, everyone, for your reports!
I would say its better to stay on 14.4.2 unless you want to use the apple watch unlock feature or planning on getting Airtag. Other than this I think there is nothing exciting about the update.

I did downgrade to 14.4.2 and I can say that it feels much better (smooth, decent battery life, and my iPhone does not get warm). I highly recommend to downgrade to 14.4.2 if anyone having issues with 14.5 and wait for 14.6 which I believe will be mostly focused on bug fixes and improvements since we are not anticipating any new features and product release soon.

Yeah, my XS was running as close to "perfectly" as can really be achieved on 14.4.2; I was getting great battery life, and wasn't experiencing any sort of bugs or issues of any significance. Normally, I am on the "update as soon as available" train, but things were running so well I was hesitant to update, and I sort of wish I had listened to my gut. I had been following this thread since the beginning and don't remember seeing any reports of phones heating up like I'm seeing now. Most of the issues that people were discussing were folks with the same longstanding issues that have spanned several versions/builds and a few that appeared to be one-offs. I don't remember seeing any reports of phones heating up like mine now is throughout the beta cycle.

Because my wife is a recent iPhone convert who is still getting aquatinted with the platform, she is a bit adverse to updates, so I always install them first to be the 'guinea pig' and make sure there aren't any showstopper issues since I enjoy messing with my devices and have been a long time beta participant. I was hopeful that 14.5 would keep up the good work of 14.4.2, as I just got my wife an Apple Watch that I'll be giving her for our anniversary soon to replace her dying Fitbit and know that mask unlock would be huge for her since she wears one all day at work. Maybe we'll see a 14.5.1 with a fix before then? 🤞
Hi! May I ask how many hours of SOT you had with 14.4.2? I'm still on 12.4 (!) on my XS with around 6 hours per 100% full charge but I'm thinking about updating finally. If I wanted to update to 14.4.2 I guess it's the last days to do so before Apple stops signing it.

Thank you!

I'll be completely honest with you, I never really paid that close attention to SOT or battery stats, so I can't really give you numbers. Sorry about that. The best I can give you is anecdotal, but every day I take my phone off the charger around 7:30 AM give or take ~30 mins, and put it on the charger around 10-10:30 PM. With 14.4.2, I'd hit bedtime with somewhere between 35-45% battery left. Obviously some days more and some days less depending on usage for the day, but the overwhelming majority of the days were in that range at bedtime, and most days on the higher end of that.

I installed 14.5 on Tuesday (day after release), and every day since I have had to plug my phone in during the day. Yesterday, I was at 30% around 6 PM and had to plug in to make it the rest of the evening, and tonight, I was out and not near a plug when I hit the Low Battery Mode Prompt (20%) at about 7:45.

Of course, this is all YMMV, but in my experience 14.4.2 was great. In your position, I would definitely jump on 14.4.2 before your opportunity disappears, since iOS 12 is basically ancient in phone age haha!

Anyone else’s phone getting warm while using Safari since installing 14.5? 98% of my daily browsing is done on my XS, and I had no issue on 14.4.2. Since updating to 14.5, my phone gets noticeably warm on the back after a few minutes of using Safari (browsing MaxRumors and the like).

I’m running 14.5 on a XS since release day and have not experienced any over-heating.

Haha I know, iOS 12 is quite old now. But works so well and I have no issues at all, so...

Thanks so much for you comments, very helpful. Sounds quite similar to my usage, to be honest. I think I'll pull the trigger this weekend, wish me luck!

I got an XS Max and it has zero problem running iOS 14.5. You should definitely upgrade if for no other reason than to get security patches. Right now you have multiple publicly known and unpatched vulnerabilities that can easily be exploited in the wild by any script kiddie including remote code execution, privilege escalation, and persistence - those most severe level of exploits.

Just tried to add the Long Expose affect to a Live Photo and it doesn’t work. I get the thumbnail with the affect applied but when I go to play it it’s completely normal. Bounce and loop do work. Anyone else noticed this? Ta.

Edit: just tried on another iPhone 12 Pro with 14.5 and it’s screwed on that too. Oh Apple you really are a sack of

Yes, same. I understand the nature of an internet forum, but 14.4.2 works very well on all my iOS devices. Unlock with Apple Watch would be the only incentive, and honestly they're about a year too late to for me to get torqued up about that. YMMV.

I went back to 14.4.2. Too many calling issues (cutting in and out, dropped calls) along with Wifi issues. iPhone 11

I also have the XS, and installed 14.5 the day after release day. I have not felt any overheating. The two nice things I have noticed are slightly better battery life (and my battery health did not take a hit), and vastly improved Face ID recognition. I find it unlocking from angles now, rather than just straight on, and unlocking is quicker. The OS also seems overall more responsive.
