Woah, with iOS 15 expected to go live, this update is surprising ...
Agreed. Update today, then update again next week.

Honestly, I thought they decided not to do 14.8 when it didn't come out two weeks ago. Or were saving it to launch alongside iOS 15 for those who were going to opt away from going to 15.0 right away.

Probably the last of the "if you want to stay on iOS 14" updates since Apple is letting people choose to stay on 14 or move to 15.
Makes sense but still somewhat out of the norm with the expected iOS 15 to launch here soon.

they’re showing the icon now just like the ios 15

So, just an update for everyone. Looks like Apple previously announced that users that did not want to go to iOS 15 would be able to benefit running iOS 14 with continuous security updates. Still somewhat strange, but that is most likely why the update came out today.

that would be interesting but i don’t see the reason
Apple have said that if you will stay on iOS 14 than is that possible also for security updates. And maybe is this the beginning of a new IOS era. You can’t stay on you’re iOS with a new iPhone and Apple Watch.

Any sources on that bud? Personally I have only noticed the stopping at 80% when wireless charging and it is off and on, sometimes it is at 96% when I wake up, other times it is only 80%. Over the cable, it seems just fine.

Everything I have seen has been just security changes, no bug fixes or feature changes

Everyone experiencing drops on Cellular or WiFi, or calls not entering, could you test if the issue is now gone with 14.8? I REALLY want to update...

from the write up - seems as if it was a very necessary security update and probably not much or anything more

Updated right away, set up as new. iPhone 11. Getting a lot of safari refreshes.

A whole point release for a security update? I think there's more under the hood changes.
Until Apple officially posts the changes on the site below, it is purely speculative. At this point, Apple had only released the security changes in this update.

Until Apple officially posts the changes on the site below, it is purely speculative. At this point, Apple had only released the security changes in this update.

Apple is releasing iOS 14.8 to the public today for iPhone users, just days before we expect iOS 15 to also be released to the public. Analytics and Xcode data had previously suggested that iOS 14.8 was in development, and sure enough, it is rolling out now alongside iPadOS 14.8.
Update: More details on the security fixes here.
The build number for today’s release of iOS 14.8 is 18H17. You can update your iPhone by going to the Settings app, choosing General, then choosing Software Update. Apple is also rolling out iPadOS 14.8 for iPad users today as well.
Notably, iOS 14.8 was not beta tested, so this is a surprise release for users. Apple’s release notes for the update simply say it “provides important security updates and is recommended for all users.”
Last year, Apple released iOS 13.7 on September 1, just two weeks before the release of iOS 14 to the public on September 16. Something else to consider this year is that Apple has already announced that it plans to give users a choice between updating to iOS 15 as soon as it’s released, or staying on iOS 14 but still receive important security updates.

iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it’s released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.
