Why the hell are all the random apps running in the background? It was Reddit in the last beta and even force closing an app doesn’t do anything.
Do you have them turned off individually in background app refresh?

not seeing your issue but then I have all apps background refresh off except maps and flight apps.

I never used Background App Refresh. That’s why it’s so confusing. I see News app running in the background sometimes but I chalked it up to the widget I have on the Home Screen. It’s getting ridiculous.

yeah that’s nuts. Can see why the frustration. Does it only happen when the apps are in multitasking? And not quit out of?

I have the same issue. I believe this started with beta 1 if I remember correctly. I noticed both the twitter app and the tile app are doing this as well despite being fully closed and not available on the switcher with backgroup app refresh disabled. I did file a report with apple on beta 6 but it has not gone anywhere as of yet.

Fingers crossed, it is just that apps need to be updated and not an actual iOS issue.

After I saw your post, I went and looked in Battery. Had issues with the News app last beta.
I saw a mess.
I do have Background App refresh turned on with it off for selected apps.
Found two problems:
1. The update turn it on for all apps. Ugh.
2. I am getting background for apps I haven’t used since the beta update (5) - haven’t done a full app check since 5.

I have Background Refresh OFF in settings; always have.

When checking battery usage some background activity has always shown, and this is normal behaviour.

When an app is minimised/closed (not force closed) it is allowed to do some stuff for a short period (few seconds? half a minute?) regardless of the background refresh option. This is why most apps work fine with background refresh turned off globally. All the apps I've installed work fine.

Background refresh is more for stuff which will periodically update even if the app has been closed for ages, such as updating news or the weather etc every half an hour or so, so that when you next open the app it's updated and ready.

When iOS14 came out I did think my widgets wouldn't update due to my OFF setting, but it seems swiping to a page with widgets counts as opening the underlying app and they then update just fine.

If the apps are still in switcher, it makes sense. What doesn't make sense though is when apps are completely closed fully(Not available on the switcher) and still reporting battery usage.

I’ve used the same widgets with both iOS versions and I’d have noticed this happening before iOS 15 but didn’t have this issue.
The problem here is these apps just start showing up randomly and hours after they’ve been used. If you look at my screenshot it was in the middle of the night and I haven’t used Signal in a couple days and Reddit for at least 5 hours prior to them running in the background. I think it has something to do with the widgets and the new “widget suggestions” in iOS 15. I’m gonna try removing the widgets temporarily and see if that makes any diff.

The apps should be frozen in a few secs once they’re minimized. I’ve been force closing Reddit since I noticed the background issue and it still manages to show up out of nowhere in the middle of the night.

Apps can wake up when they receive notifications. Notifications don‘t always have to be *bing* <banner>, you can afaik send silent ones.

Background app refresh only allocates more „wake up time“. Killing an app in the switcher is pointless.

Maybe so, I cannot say for sure but I don't remember seeing weird things like this with iOS 14.

I did have a bit of jip from them in B1 and 2. But after a Bluetooth repairing, seemed to clear things up. Haven’t had any FaceTime issues on my G1 AirPods since. They just run out now in 15 minutes 😆😂

yeah it was strange, "speaker" was the only option I had for audio output. did a reset, same thing. did a hard reset, works fine now. shrug! i'll admit, didn't try my AirPods, haven't charged them in about a month lol. haven't had much use for them since WFH.

This morning at 8am i left my fully charged iPhone 11, running the current beta at home. Just a few minutes ago, i found the phone to be empty after i returned home from work. And during the day no app (besides Siri sometimes) has been running in the background.

Ar least the graphs leading down are kind of symetrical :)
