Hey there,

My XS feels overall sluggish and slower since I updated to iOS 15. Typing feels somewhat laggy, the animation of going from locked screen to main screen drags a bit, the gesture to expose all open apps sometimes gets a bit ‘stuck’, etc.

Anyone else experiencing this? I’ve had the new iOS for a week now.
Cheers
Heh I’m not trying to hijack your thread but I’m a super noob. Can you tell me how to downgrade my iOS and jailbrake my xr or at least point me to an in-depth guide?

I updated my iPhone XS to iOS 15.4 and the stutter while closing apps seems to be gone. I was on iOS 15.3 and it was already fine. Sometimes it would lag, but this update feels better, specifically on the app switcher. Fingers crossed for battery performance which was pretty good on iOS 15.3 IMO.

So far so good on my XS (256 GB and battery has been replaced recently). Apps are closing and opening without any lag. Fingers crossed it keeps up!

it will never be solved
I think people are slowly waking up to this! It will never be ‘solved’ because it’s by design to give the impression the phone is slow and old, and you need to go and buy a new one.

I know quite a few people with various iPhone models and all those with an iPhone 13 are having no problems, but older models are ‘affected’, surprisingly even some iPhone 12’s.

What’s interesting is if I get my ancient old iPhone 6 on iOS 10 out the cupboard and jump on the WiFi it’s super smooth and lightening fast. Browse the same sites on my iPhone X running 15.4 and scrolling stutters and judders like crazy.

If we disregard the whole 'planned obsolescence' theory, it all comes down to one integral aspect of iOS that should be of the highest priority: optimization.

Clearly iOS is only properly optimized for the iPhone 13 models and this could be fixed later on, as Apple software seems to have been coming out in a half-baked and unoptimized state nowadays and then fixed later with an update (e.g. ProMotion on 13 and MBP, webcam quality on Studio Display).

Don't misunderstand me, I am NOT condoning this kind of ****** software quality (especially coming from a vertically integrated company like Apple), but I am still positive that a fix is coming at some point.

I readed on Apple dev forum that on iOS 15 disappeared RAM limit for applications. I am asking my self why people dont care about this problem. iPhone is a really expensive device.

Could be some defected application.

There is my list of most using applications:
  1. Spotify
  2. Firefox
  3. Outlook
  4. Youtube
  5. Instagram
  6. Reeder
  7. Teams

Come on, dude. I have an iPad Mini 4, with an A8 like your 6, which has sat on iOS 10 up until recently and it had evidently noticeable slowdown when browsing websites. A lot of the website plug-ins and scripts do not load on iOS 10 either. I brought my iPhone 6S out to charge it up and did some WiFi web browsing and it was slow also on iOS 11 despite it being lightning fast back when I retired it in 2018. Websites have come along since then resulting in all older devices struggling, not just Apple devices. Websites are more bloated today than they were back in 2016. All devices age when doing simple tasks such as web browsing. I agree that iOS becomes more demanding with each iteration as the animations improve and more features are added, etc…

The iPhone X came out in 2017 so it’s an old phone. Apple users are lucky it’s still supported with the latest patches and security updates and is still useful to this day. I just would not expect the smoothest browsing experience on a dated chipset. I brought my retired iPhone 8 (which has the same chipset as the X) out a couple of days ago and updated it to iOS 15. The experience isn’t up there with my 12 but it still runs everything to a reasonably high standard. I could easily go back to it and thought it would be a viable option even in the present day. I was shocked to see how well it ran applications and browsed the web almost half a decade after release.

Wish I could share your optimism!.. but I don’t think a ‘fix’ is coming.

‘Optimisation’ is what’s being used as the cover for the planned obsolescence here unfortunately, and if you look at things from a high level you could almost agree - clearly newer models have even faster hardware etc, but it you look at things at a much lower level it’s basic things that are being slowed down, such a simple opening and closing animations for apps and other UI functionality.

If you were an Apple engineer and were given the brief to make older phones ‘feel’ old and slow, and force users to upgrade, you would introduce exactly the sort of things that they’ve introduced. Ie stutter and lag navigating the UI, judder scrolling websites, intermittently unresponsive touch screen (although this only occurs when navigating, not when the keyboard is up), crackle and distortion on music if you multi task while audio or video is playing etc - yet when running a graphically intensive game there are no issues ar all…

No doubt these ‘bugs’ have resulted in lots of sales of new phones, but it’s a slippery slope as more and more people will cotton onto what’s happening, and that damages the brand.

I had been waiting for a new MBA with OLED screen to upgrade to from my old MBA (that still runs like new due to staying on macOS 10..), but I’m not interested in spending $1500 on something that gets slowed down by design, forcing an upgrade.

Update: my XS Max still hasn’t lagged and has been running the smoothest it’s ever been in a long time. Battery has finally improved after indexing it seems, the first 3 days it was draining a little faster than before but now it’s good.
