Why does a "little point update" impact battery life heavily? I have a 14PM and am quite happy with 17.5.1. I'm getting excellent battery life so am apprehensive to update to any 17.6x upgrades. I may hang in there until 18 comes out for a few weeks.
That’s was a joke especially because people are obsessed with battery life and starting to make science out of it after such a little update.

I've realized the battery improves if you charge it with an 5w brick
I've ruined the batteries in former iPhones by fast charging and/or wireless charging them. In both cases the battery gets significantly warm or even hot. This is proven bad for battery health. So for my latest iPhone 12 Pro, which i got brand new last September, i only used that plain old white 5W brick from the 6s for charging and the battery still has 100% health!

How many cycles you have on your 12?

Depending on the cycles you might experience sudden drop in battery health over a few weeks before it stabilizes again. Chances are it’s not actually at 100% after almost a year. And there’s already plenty of posts about 12 series batteries being lower quality.

iApplebytes uploaded new video for 17.6.1. Battery test result: Better than 17.6 but worse than 17.5.

However, there is no big difference. I think security updates are more important and decided to upgrade my 15PM from iOS 17.5 to iOS 17.6.1.

Yeah, I also watched it, and for the family of chips I’m interested in, A13 and A15, there are great improvements.

Updating all my devices ASAP. Will stay there to see how iOS 18 develops.

If anyone wants to check the battery scores, here they are:

I am still occasionally seeing cellular issues, even up this point where I have to enable Airplane mode. Not sure if it’s a Verizon thing around my office. I know big buildings can wreak havoc on cell signals.

I can't get to that information, cause Apple is limiting access to that information to the newer models - purely on purpose of course!

That’s definitely a d**k move. They should know that no one’s in the market for iPhone 15 for the ability to check # of cycles.

You can though check the cycles on Coconut Battery if you have a Mac. And fully charging your iPhone might even give you a reading of the actual battery capacity. Or one of the ips log files.

Just bare in mind that iApplebytes don't test all features on a phone. Parts/features that is normally draining the battery such as Wifi, cellular, BT aren't included/utlized if I have understood it correctly.

Yeah, but it gives a basic idea of the drain when putting the CPU under load, which is what GeekBench 4 Battery test does. Aside from that, yes, I also read your comments and make a decision after taking all data into account.

I guess it is safe to download the IPSW file from IPSW.me, but, I think someone explained me a better way to connect to Apple’s servers through terminal and download them…
Links on IPSW.me are actually Apple server links so you are not downloading from IPSW.me but just using the site to get the downloads from Apple servers... It's the same when accessing the downloads using links posted on TheiPhoneWiki or TheAppleWiki website...

Just wait for iOS 17.7 or even iOS 17.8 if you are not going to update to iOS 17.6

Nah, I’m finally updating to 17.6.1, but thanks for the info.

You're expecting better battery life on brand new iOS 18 with so many new features over iOS 17 that's been refined over a year?
I didn't say I was! I said I'm happy with 17.5.1. I meant in my comment that I'll wait for 18 to be out for a little while to see how the feedback is. Obviously if 18 is turning into bloatware with features, you would think it may impact battery life. However let's hope Apple have tweaked the new iOS to accommodate battery performance. We'll wait and see.

According to iAppleBytes’ test, the iPhone 15 (which has the same internals as your 14PM) experienced better battery life on 17.6.1, you can check it on the graph.

I’m not telling you to update, I understand how you’d feel if you started to experience any sort of battery drain, but according to the test, for A16 devices iOS 17.6.1 is better for battery life than iOS 17.5.1

It is true that, like @Reverend Benny said, such tests don’t reflect other variables such as the cellular signal or WiFi/Bluetooth reception, which play a significant role in the battery life, and if I recall correctly, iOS 17.6 introduced a modem update for some models. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing per se, it can be an improvement as well. And remember that iOS 17.6 carries a lot of security patches. I think it is worth, at least, to consider it.

I will let you know my experience but my iPhone uses an A15 so my experience may differ from yours.

PS: I suspect that any version of iOS 18 or 18.1, at least during the first months, will be worse battery-wise than iOS 17.6.1, that’s pretty sure.

I haven't had any battery issues in years, but with this 17.6.1 update my 14Pro is draining exceptionally quickly. It shows safari as my big sucker. It dropped from 80 to 50 in about twenty minutes. The phone was warm. Restarted and have the same issue. Argh. Haven't had this issue since a beta several years ago.

You must have some rogue issue or a bad install.
I’m not seeing that on my 14Pro while using Safari, certainly no rapid battery drain and no heat.
