I don't this its wise to recommend people what to do before we even know what bugs and security fixes that 17.7 does contain. Would recommend people to wait and have a look at the release notes when its being released.
To do what? My recommendation is much more complex than “stay on 17.6.1”.
The user is still on 17.5.1 so just updating to 17.6.1 will provide a big security patch that came with 17.6
Then, about 17.7, I just told him to update to that if he/she doesn’t fear any
possible last minute bug that could affect the battery life. Because the possibility is definitely there, I think it is wise to warn the user that 17.7
could have those effects, just in case they are heavily reliant on battery life.
And regarding iOS 18, I just said that there are a few aesthetic bugs that bother me, but I already said it works pretty fine for me, so that’s up to them to update.
Honestly, I think providing a more nuanced reply is definitely wiser than just defaulting on “always update to the latest version and don’t look back”. That would be the norm if Apple allowed users to downgrade, and if there weren’t some releases with battery drain, or other issues. But Apple’s software QC is what it is. As I said, if the user isn’t worried about battery life at all, then go 17.7 all the way. But I feel like I must provide a bigger picture.
If you don’t think it is wise, go ahead and give the user a more simple recommendation, that -not wanting to be rude-, coincidentally usually aligns with
update to the latest version.
We have two different approaches, mine is heavily critical and analytical, and I will share it here the same way that you are allowed to share yours.
EDIT: re-reading your message again, yeah, I think it would be good to see what iOS 17.7 contains, see how performs on other’s devices, and then decide. Especially being as close as tomorrow. I guess 17.6.1 will stay signed for a few days past the 17.7 release.
