Okay, according to IPSW.me, it’s being signed again. With the exception of the iPhone 14PM. Weird.
Are you saying with my 14PM if I download and update to iOS 17.6.1, that it is unsigned? What does that mean?

Also I read somewhere that Apple will be having two iOS versions available! i.e. iOS 17.7 and iOS 18.0 - I don't know how accurate that info is?

I am really tempted to downgrade to the previous version of 17.6.1 this weekend. It's pretty noticeably worse compared to the previous version, I had thought it might get better but...
I have a 14PM with 17.5.1. Should I hold off until iOS 18 is polished? I've also heard a rumor on YouTube of there being 17.7 available??

I was saying exactly a month ago that the update was unsigned for a few hours and, it got signed again. With the exception of some devices. But man, that was a month ago! The IPSW is signed again even for your 14PM.k

AFAIK iOS 17.7 is a RC and it will probably be released next Monday along with iOS 18.

My recommendation? Stay on iOS 17.6.1 (build 93) or update to 17.7 if you don’t mind any possible battery drain issue. I’ve been using iOS 18 RC and, in my opinion, even tho it works fine, has some bugs while switching between light mode and dark mode that will make me stay on iOS 17 for a bit more.

I don't this its wise to recommend people what to do before we even know what bugs and security fixes that 17.7 does contain. Would recommend people to wait and have a look at the release notes when its being released.

Edit: The recommendation to use 17.6.1 is a good one no matter what build.

To do what? My recommendation is much more complex than “stay on 17.6.1”.

The user is still on 17.5.1 so just updating to 17.6.1 will provide a big security patch that came with 17.6

Then, about 17.7, I just told him to update to that if he/she doesn’t fear any possible last minute bug that could affect the battery life. Because the possibility is definitely there, I think it is wise to warn the user that 17.7 could have those effects, just in case they are heavily reliant on battery life.

And regarding iOS 18, I just said that there are a few aesthetic bugs that bother me, but I already said it works pretty fine for me, so that’s up to them to update.

Honestly, I think providing a more nuanced reply is definitely wiser than just defaulting on “always update to the latest version and don’t look back”. That would be the norm if Apple allowed users to downgrade, and if there weren’t some releases with battery drain, or other issues. But Apple’s software QC is what it is. As I said, if the user isn’t worried about battery life at all, then go 17.7 all the way. But I feel like I must provide a bigger picture.

If you don’t think it is wise, go ahead and give the user a more simple recommendation, that -not wanting to be rude-, coincidentally usually aligns with update to the latest version.

We have two different approaches, mine is heavily critical and analytical, and I will share it here the same way that you are allowed to share yours.

EDIT: re-reading your message again, yeah, I think it would be good to see what iOS 17.7 contains, see how performs on other’s devices, and then decide. Especially being as close as tomorrow. I guess 17.6.1 will stay signed for a few days past the 17.7 release.

I wouldn't update from 17.5.1 if he's happy with it on 14 PM and worried about it. iOS 17 is a crapshoot even with minor point releases, so any security upgrades don't really matter that much to someone who isn't a celebrity or 'important' person societally.

Would not be worth it if updating resulting in halved battery or a cooked phone or new bugs that weren't there previously (not saying it necessarily would, but it might / could) . 17.5.1 is 'mature' enough iOS 17 in the cycle. IMO.

I'm still on 17.5.1.
I'm not jumping to iOS 18 yet and I haven't updated to iOS 17.7.

Can anyone recommend iOS 17.7
Absolutely, I've almost updated all my devices (including iPads) and have 300 + people at work running it with no reported issues. Battery is the same or better than 17.6.1 on my 13 pro.
The iOS devices updated at work are a mix of 11, 13, 14 SE2 and SE3.

The only bug I came across initially was that i needed to kill iMessage for new messages to appear after I was notified I has a new message. But a restart seemed to have solve that issue.

The biggest benefit since 17.6 aside from all the security updates is the boost in battery-time when using cellular connectivity.

Having used that version 17.5.1, and 17.6.1 (not signed anymore), the latter is better at least battery wise. Also lots of security patches. iOS 17.7 is even better in performance and battery life from what I’ve seen, so I would definitely install 17.7
