Despite the poor battery life, one thing I am pleasantly surprised at is the performance and speed of the 11PM on iOS 17 👌🏻
I’m not reading all 20 pages of this thread, but something I’m reading regularly about iOS 17 is the worse battery life.

I wanted to ask if this hasn’t improved even just a bit during the betas, and if you think iOS 17 will constitute a hit on the battery life of our iPhones. Especially if we take into account that the A17 chip will be much more efficient and the upcoming iOS versions will be optimized for newer devices.

Yikes...yeah, I'm not seeing that on my phone. Bug?

I’m not sure what it is, it happens when you try to crop a wallpaper to how you want it on the lockscreen. It seems to be intentional as it’s happened on every iOS 17 beta, and once it applies it to an image it’s hard to get rid of. It only happens to certain images, for whatever reason, either way it really messes up the lockscreen experience.

Playing around with photos on my 13 ProMax and found an odd issue.
Maybe normal and if someone could comment.

I took several photos around the house and on the iPhone they are 3.2 to 4.3 MB in size.
When I use my iCloud email account to send them, selecting actual size, they arrive at 1.5 to 2.4 MB in size.
Comparing them on a large monitor there is a noticeable degradation in the sent photo.

Example:
On iPhone - 3.7MB
In iCloud Mail - 3.7MB
In receiving mail - 3.7MB
Actual size 2.3MB

Happens when I send to any of these accounts.
iCloud to Proton
iCloud to Outlook
iCloud to GMail

Now if I send Proton to Proton (iPhone to S23U) it retains both size and definition.

Looks like iCloud email is "tweaking" the sent photo.

Noticed something similar long time ago. After that I don't send any photos through Apple's Mail app. Only documents and business texting. Pretty sure it's not about iOS 17

It's definitely intentional, but almost no one understands those intentions. I don't think "Apple has a reason" explains this weird 'feature'

Have you checked the formats of both the images?

iPhone camera saves images in HEIF but are converted to jpeg when being sent which is a compressed format even with actual size selected.

Right now I am not owner of any iPhone but I remember setting where you can choose how to export photos from iPhone. (setting like original, heif, etc..) This setting maybe working just for photo transfer via USB but maybe it will work for this purpose also.

I just noticed this too! I wanted to change my memoji but it only lets me edit the call poster?

(Weird position to put it in anyway. What does the contact photo of iMessage have to do with the poster. Shouldn’t it be out under „phone“)
Yeah, that kind of sucks if they removed that option. I used emoji to quickly add contact photos. Especially for those random contacts that I have.

I am running public beta on iOS 17 on both mine and my wife’s iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both of us are running Tmobile and have decent 5G coverage. I have found a weird bug, can someone confirm me is this the case for them as well?
Try this on iOS 17 device
1. Turn off WiFi
2. Make sure data is on
3. Make a FaceTime call to another iOS 17 device
4. See if the other device gets the call.

I have tried resetting network settings, hard reset, updating to latest public beta, nothing seems to be working. The only thing left is restoring the phone and then trying.

Thanks

I have already reported this to Apple since few betas but haven't had any luck.
Anyone able to test this? for me its still not working!

I have iOS 17 on my 13 Pro Max since beta 6 and in the beginning it was fine, it wasn't bad but not good. Since beta 7 it's one of the worst betas (in terms of battery life) I have ever used. I have to plug my phone several times a day at least for few minutes because it wouldn't last me whole day. I used to end the day with even 40% of battery left, now I'd do the same if I recharge it to full 🤷‍♂️

I'm hoping RC will fix that, if not then huge yikes if that's what they'll release to public.

But this is just my opinion, there might be people with great battery life.

@OhMyMy

Looked at the format. HEIF and Most Compatible.
iPhone camera is set to High Efficiency / AppleProRaw / Apple ProRes in Settings.

The fun part is that is I use GMail, Outlook (Exchange) or ProtonMail the quality and size remains unchanged.
If I use iCloud mail both the quality and size are downgraded even though I indicate to send Actual size/quality.

I changed the camera to most compatible (jpg) and see the same issue. Just not as drastic.
If I do an HEIF it is seen as JPG on receipt.

Did another quick check (test)
Did a photo of my pup in a chair in HEIF (3.4 MB) and JPG (3.8MB).

Sent via iCloud Mail to Proton on my S23U. The photos in both formats shrank.
HEIF - 3.4MB - 2.8MB
JPG - 3.8MB - 3.7MB

If I send iPhone (Proton) to S23U (Proton) they are the same size both send and receive. Only iCloud email seems to modify them.

I usually do not send photos via iCloud email.
Looks like this has been going on longer than iOS17.

Thanks for your feedback 👍

Both 16 and 17 have eaten into my 13 ProMax battery life.
Be nice to get it back but I’m not holding my breath.

Thank you for sharing, in such a detailed way, your experience. I think I’m gonna update to iOS 16.6.1 and stay there as long as I can (or until Apple improves battery life on iOS 17).

Reference post #499. I see that you saw screens shots of the issue from someone else’s post. It’s the same issue. Do you have an iPhone 14 Pro?
Ah yes, I see it now-- I normally dont crop my photos for wallpapers so I didn't see that behavior. I understand what Apple's trying to do with it, but it still maybe needs some fine-tuning :D

A universal answer to explain every weird thing they do

Not really. I’m just saying that it’s perilous to assume that it’s not a possibility. No one saw the Dynamic Island coming and everyone was screaming about how dumb it was to have the notch become a sideways “i”. (“Whaddya gonna do with that extra space?”) And then the Dynamic Island was announced and everyone understood.

Yeah, it is. Nevertheless, when it comes to this wallpaper blurring I highly doubt that it has something to do with either new iPhones or their hardware. More of an intentional bug to me

Agreed. And I also don’t usually crop my wallpapers either and that’s the issue. When I select my photo to use as my wallpaper, iOS automatically crops the photo. I don’t want that, so I pinch to uncrop it and then the blur takes over the screen. It’s a lose lose situation. Because it’s so blatantly flawed I suspect it coincides with a new feature yet to be announced with the 15, or a bug.

Yes you explained it better than I could, that’s exactly what it does to me too.

I believe they did it so that the time and widgets on the top of the screen were more legible, but for whatever reason it’s not working as intended. Hopefully we get some clarity in about 18 hours.

Agreed.

I’m also perturbed that they will be forcing billions of people to set a wallpaper using their constrained settings. Either you get a zoomed in image or a wallpaper with the top 3rd completely frosty and unrecognizable. How did someone sign off on this.

The blurred top of the wallpaper is annoying. But I found if I do the finger pinch, I can make it go away. There's also excessive blurring on the new Contact Poster feature. Not sure what Apple's obsession with blurry is. I'm guessing it's to make it easier to read. Same thing with screen darkening. It's to make the icons "pop".

I make it go away with the finger pinch to adjust. But we shouldn't have to do that. It's like the screen darkening they do. The average user is not that savvy, and will just be confused. There's also a lot of unnecessary blur on the new Contact Posters. It makes it really difficult to set.

I think it’s by design. Regardless of selecting “actual size” if you add a photo as an attachment in the Mail app then it switches to jpeg while trying to preserve as much detail as possible. JPEG is a compressed format as you already know.

Test it again by sharing a photo via the photos app to the Mail app and select “current” in the Format options. That sends the photo in HEIF and seems to be of the original size. Post back your observations on the bigger screen.

It's bug, end of story. And if not, there is a "suggestion" possibility in the feedback app ;). Did you guys reported it? I am asking, because I am going to and I could reference it to yours report.

No need to be over frustrated with something found in beta guys. Remember the "hang up" button for calls being on the right side of the keyboard and after beta 6 or 5 was introduced, they moved it back to the middle? Big :apple: brother still listens :)
