No but I lost track how many times I heard Apple CS recommend a reinstall of the OS.
It's a step on their trouble shooting guide.
Apple’s reinstall suggestion is a fresh install which would get rid of all the caches, temp files and any potential bad config resulting from the unique setup of a user. OS’ are complex so there’s potential for a corrupted file over time and a fresh install would eliminate the issue.

I’d been sticking to OTA since iOS 16 & 17 and haven’t had any issues most others mention here. The issue I had were actual bugs and were resolved in the next beta. I think it’s more to do with the specific apps/config a user has among other things than the method of install itself. iOS itself does a cryptographic signature verification of the volume before and after an install and would fail if it didn’t. The hashes are unique so has to match exactly for the process to be successful.

Any source or Proof that ispw installs Are better than ota Updates?

Just ad hoc testing that demonstrates, usually, less issues via ipsw than OTA.
It’s the “usually” that is frustrating when you try to wrap your digits around it.

One supportive aspect: those of us doing this across several betas and OS versions show the same result trend.
Conclusive? No.
Indicative? Yes.

Subjective (opinion): Yes

There's no empirical evidence... just conjecture, anecdote and opinion.

If it was based in fact, Apple could not allow OTA updates, as their support burden would skyrocket.

It’s not proof and IPSW method isn’t better, because it’s the same files after install present on the device… but, rather than replacing only changed files like OTA does and IPSW file replaces the whole iOS system on update, and there is something to be said about that method of updating that’s creates a “cleaner” I call it, version of iOS on your phone every time.

Also, Craig F, when we carried out this little experiment for him, 2 phones on OTA method, 2 on IPSW method for an update… the 2 on OTA had the same bug in safari that wasn’t present on the phones using the IPSW method.

His solution after reboot, test for bug, reboot, test for bug, reboot, test for bug… then he advised an IPSW instal.

So, what I took from all that is, why put myself through any of it and risk an OTA update behaving like that, when I can cut out the middle man so to speak and just use the IPSW files.

Having done so for a while now, I also don’t see hardly any of these bugs I read about on here. And never had the square notification bug for example.

Yes there are bullet holes in this if you pick it apart, but just on face value what we saw, what Craig recommend for us to do and the results using the IPSW file method… it does sway me.

I’ve got a list of people on here who have asked about the IPSW method of how to reinstall the iOS… all OTA users with connectivity issues or battery drain etc etc… all had positive effects from the full reinstall. I don’t knock the OTA method at all. Just would rather chose something that time and time again has had proven better results.

That’s not gonna be the last one he does lol. He’ll make 5 more around the RC next week…. 🙄
Even though I like his videos, I couldn't agree more. It's gonna definitely be like this:
- New features on RC (Probably nothing)
- A lot of stuff related to the date of release, iOS 17.1 beta 1 release and so on.
- Poor battery life on his 14 Pro Max "that will take a few days to measure".
What else?

I know this has been asked probably a million times, so apologies.

I was always under the impression that a IPSW install was a wipe and restore? If I were to install (using your excellent instructions at the beginning of this thread), is it the same as an OTA update - ie it will keep all my settings? I would prefer to do that, but have always done a OTA install. The app I am worried about is my company RSA app, as that is a real PIA to get reinstalled and I am in the chicken and egg situation that I have no remote access (I WFH) to contact support lol or access to my work VDI machine if that goes. Fixable, but waste half a day!

Thanks and sorry to make you repeat yourself :)
Not a wipe just a re-install and replacing ALL files in the OS.

It's not like that. The files are all identical, regardless of how you get there. The signatures on the files require that, or the OS won't boot.
I think the point is on IPSW install ALL files are replaced and OTA just changed files are replaced. But definitely the files are identical though.

How else would he make thousands a month?

Did they remove the ability to create a contact photo using initials or emoji? When I go to edit a contact, I only see the contact poster setup screen.

I just noticed this too! I wanted to change my memoji but it only lets me edit the call poster?

(Weird position to put it in anyway. What does the contact photo of iMessage have to do with the poster. Shouldn’t it be out under „phone“)

Same performance? I am fine with latest 16v. But always interested in latest upgrades.
Little bit afraid of overheating and battery drain

It’s beta , not same performance. If those are your fears then beta testing probably isn’t for you

I really miss the feature where you could forward/rewind on videos by swiping anywhere on the video content. I don’t know why Apple got rid of this. I wish they at least made it an option in settings.
Agreed.

I’m also perturbed that they will be forcing billions of people to set a wallpaper using their constrained settings. Either you get a zoomed in image or a wallpaper with the top 3rd completely frosty and unrecognizable. How did someone sign off on this.

OTA installs are all I've done for 11 years. No problems, other than the occasional setting that reverts to default. And that's only happened 2 or 3 times in 11 years. I downloaded and installed iOS 5 sitting on a bench in front of a Mexican Restaurant for their wifi. It took 2 hours. But no problems.

Idle speculation but perhaps Apple has a reason for leaving the top portion blurred?

What is this in reference to? Im not seeing that in my wallpapers?

Still trying to figure out a good reason for this. The dark/blurry area at top is not supposed to be there.
