Could be both one for 17.1 and one for 17.03 😉
As the MacRumors article said:
The bug should be fixed with iOS 17.1, which is currently in beta and is expected to be released in late October. It's quite possible that Apple might also make a bug fix available sooner with a smaller software update, such as iOS 17.0.3.
So the 17.1 is in progress with a beta 2 Oct 3rd or 4th (6-7 days), but it's a "might also make" with 17.0.3 patch. So I am a bit pessimistic to how fast Apple will work the issue because of the below text. It might be more that all these impacted app vendors need to fix issues by updates then a 17.0.3 patch soon?
Apple also says some recent updates to third-party apps have overloaded the system and contributed to the overheating issue. The report notes that some of these apps include Instagram, Uber, and the racing game Asphalt 9: Legends, and Apple is working with the developers of these apps to address the issue. The report adds that Instagram already introduced a fix as part of an update to the app released on Wednesday.

the fact 17.0.3 hasn't showed yet in the algoryhthyms makes me think we won't get it immeadietly like this week. I'm thinking early next week

I had the same thought. It may be that Apple just has to tell them (the responsible app developers) how to rework their code to eliminate the problem.

What are these "algorhthyms" you keep referring to? I'm not referring to your misspelling of "algorithm", but what are you referring to substantively? Server logs?

Yeah I guess so there has been no sign of them working on 17.0.3 yet. I don't think they will be able to fix it quickly enough to get it out this week

My speculation is that they are close to releasing a fix for the overheating. The fact that they acknowledged this on a Saturday leads me to believe they already know how to fix it. I don't think the acknowledgment would have been made public if they weren't close to a solution.

This statement from Apple addresses everything they are acting on:

We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity. We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We're working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.

If Apple was to do this correctly they need to be comprehensive several ways not just spit out a patch. Given that there was a initial 17.0.1/17.0.2 patch, then all non iPhones 15's went to 17.0.2 a few days later, I tend to doubt that Apple would want to just release a 17.0.3 quickly as it would be seen as fixing only a few things, then expecting maybe a 17.0.4 patch before 17.1 goes public. Yes this can look bad if not done right.

Maybe, I think Apple needed to acknowledge it quickly, to keep new customers happy that a fix was coming, and to also keep sales pushing, helping stop people freaking out about the Titanium frames… or that product would have been a sinking ship.

I agree about them needing to say something....we'll see in the next few days what they release (or not)

Heat wave in California tomorrow, so I bet this will spur Tim to stay up late tonight working on a fix so that he can get it out by tomorrow. 🥵
