But what's stopping Microsoft from release office apps for the xbox? Any limitation here is purely self-imposed, based on an arbitrary definition of what a gaming console should and should not do.

Could these gaming companies then be charged for dumping, since they are knowingly selling their hardware at a loss or break-even point?

Personally, I don't see what is wrong with Apple choosing to have their cake and eat it too, by selling both their hardware at a handsome margin, and collecting 30% of all app proceeds.
It all boils down to the screwy concept of ‘fairness’. The critics can only come up with words like greedy, monopoly, unfair, as if we users have a right to quality merchandise at a price WE determine is fair, not the market. Those same critics have always had the option to move to another platform, to buy less expensive hardware and software. But no, they want to force Apple to comply with THEIR idea of what a fair price/commission is. The really want complete government regulation of price and profit in some imaginary FAIR economic utopia so everyone can afford an iPhone 14 Pro Max no matter their ability to afford one.

Then what is the point of all of all of this then?
My question exactly. I know, because it WILL happen. Epic and others are driving this. Not you users on this site. So when these companies win, it will happen. And like I keep saying, Epic targeted Google too since it’s more difficult to side load than they think which is WHY this isn’t happening on Android.

People need to realize this. Both iOS AND Android will be changing. I guarantee you some of the people that are jumping up and down about this will change their minds in a few years due to the consequences. But by then it will be too late.

Still, I like apple's hardware eco-system AND would like more freedom when it comes to software. As an apple customer I bite the bullet and live with the wallet garden - but I'd rather not - because for me it has more drawbacks than benefits. Let me have what I want?
And why should you get what you want? You want government regulation to get what you want? What gives you the right to demand anything from Apple? You prefer Apple’s products but you want them on your terms, not Apple’s? How does this work in a free market economy? Have you not witnessed what happens when government manages an economy?

Does this mean that I finally would be able to install an app that can record my phone calls?
If so, I welcome this!
Yay, no more running a cable through an external recording device for interviews. That'd indeed be nice. But I see nothing that suggests that sideloaded apps will be more capable than iOS ones - therefore they won't offer an additional attack vector either - unless they deliberately circumvent iOS security measures.

That doesn’t work. I like Xbox more than PlayStation. So can we force Sony to port their exclusives to Xbox? Why can’t I have what I want there?

It’s not up to you to dictate how a company runs. If you like a product, buy it. If you don’t. Don’t. This whole “I want things my way” is a very strange attitude.

I want a lot of things. Doesn’t mean I get to tell multiple companies how to make their products.

There are many people who would love the opportunity to sideload on iOS, and I anticipate it will be fairly

-Apps have already been trending towards a subscription-based model, long before sideloading was ever a consideration.
-People may want several apps (such as emulators) that are not available on the App Store.
-No, they wont find a way to "bill developers 27%".. The entire point of the EU bill is to bypass Apple as gatekeeper, not to mandate cosmetic changes.
an eu court already ruled they are entitled to their commission

Safari lacks any compatibility modes and a lot of websites design just for Chromium

Oh god here's this argument again.

Microsoft isn't a gaming company either, and they still support games, which is why Windows is king for PC gaming, to the point even Playstation can't ignore PC anymore. Hell, they're buying Activision/Blizzard/King for 68 billion dollars.

Sony isn't a gaming company either, and yet they still make and support games with the Playstation, which is one of their biggest departments. Hell Playstation saved Sony from bankruptcy during a period where their music and TV and Bluray divisions were in a slump.

Meta isn't a gaming company either, they're primarily virtual reality hardware and social media services, and yet they support games, which as a result the Quest 2 is the most dominant VR platform, to the point many VR developers ignore PC and just develop for Quest.

If Apple gave even a tiny bit of caring about the game industry (and I'm not talking about "mobile gaming" I'm talking proper AAA releases) then Mac gaming wouldn't be a meme and could actually be a threat to Microsoft's monopoly on PC gaming.

One other argument: Apple isn't a movie or TV producer, they're primarily tech for lifestyle. And yet they still make movies and TV shows. Now imagine if Apple had a gaming division. Apple entering the AAA game industry would be a massive shakeup. It's why there was a lot of excitement over the idea of Apple buying EA despite that rumor not being true.

Friendly reminder Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller demo'd a Playstation emulator during Macworld 1999

No. Any APK should be allowed.

Just copy what's done with the Mac where you're warned about unsigned apps and have to go through extra steps to install them. It's not rocket science.

Sorry can't hear you over the Youtube videos I'm watching on FireFox since I don't have ads thanks to UBlock Origin
  1. LOL, Microsoft IS NOT a gaming company? Xbox launched in 2002, maybe you can't do math. That was Two Decades ago. Sony is only 8 years longer in the gaming industry. And Windows PC gaming has been around since the original Windows way back in 1985. DirectX is from 1995, 27 years ago.
  2. Sony is a gaming company, Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony Interactive Entertainment) was founded in 1993, 29 years ago. Their first product was the Playstation.
  3. Meta is a gaming company. John Carmack, the creator of Doom, helped contribute to the development of the Oculus. That makes Meta, the owner of Reality Labs, a gaming company. There is no one more associated with gaming than John Carmack.
  4. Apple's only foray into gaming was the Pippin, and a stalled attempt by Steve Jobs to lure developers to the Mac. An attempt that failed so bad, Microsoft bought Bungie Studios whose Third Person Shooter Halo was redeveloped into a First Person Shooter exclusive to the Xbox. Maybe you have heard of it?
  5. AppleTV Studios producing Ted Lasso, Martin Scorcese Films, Tom Hanks films, and being nominated for Emmys and Academy Awards does not really lend well to your argument that Apple is not a Film or TV company, either.
  6. Apple's only real attempt at gaming these days is Apple Arcade, a sad attempt at GamePass that gives mostly small devs a quick access to billions of consumers, but the apps aren't curated well and they have an inconsistent duration on the store. And those games are barebones mobile games, not AAA titles.

Indeed. But then, why the fuss in forcing Apple to allow side-loading? You aren't forced to use an iPhone or you aren't forced to put your app in the App Store. Just use other platforms.

Why not say "Consumer always has the choice. You have the choice to look elsewhere or don't buy it at all." when asked why should Apple allow this? Use other platforms. You have a choice. You want a more open system, there are alternatives.

In my POV, making iOS more open when there are other alternatives with a more open approach is just making things all the same. It is just odd. You have a choice, like you say. I have an iPhone because I want. And if I didn't like it, I would change it. When I pay for it, I know what I am paying for. If Meta decides to pull all their apps, If I value more FB, Insta instead of the phone/system, I move to another platform. Like I had to do when I wanted a more versatile machine to play games – had a PS4 and decided to buy a PC.

Everyone talks about the 30% that Apple takes. Well if apps increase their prices to gain the same margin (when in comparison with other platforms), it would be down to the user to decide if they want to pay more, not pay, or change platforms to pay less.

You are now telling me that if I don't like the iOS as it is now, to go elsewhere - That is what people against this have been saying - if you don't like that you cannot sideload, go elsewhere.
That's not what I'm telling you at all. I said nothing of iOS. Do you pay for iOS? I was talking about apps, where most of the time you have a choice of different apps that do the same thing. An app in the App Store is like a product in a grocery store. Don't like the price? Buy it someplace else or don't buy it at all. We all make that choice every time we go.

I don't want to download apps from the web. I don't want to put my credit card information on a thousand different websites. I don't want to manage my subscriptions in five different places. I don't want to install junk App Stores from Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, Epic just to get their software and services.
The response to every single one of these is: Then don’t.

You already can. Microsoft allows sideloading on the Xbox via Dev Mode. It's why the console hasn't been jailbroken since Microsoft lets us run whatever we want in a sandbox.
I thought Microsoft have put a stop to that this week…

“Microsoft is barring users from running game emulations on the Xbox Series X | S. On Thursday, Twitter user @gamr12, who's involved with the distribution of the RetroArch emulation software on Xbox, posted the error message they received when attempting to launch emulated content”

No that's for running unauthorized software in Retail Mode, which is the main Xbox UI in the operating system, and where you run your games and blurays and streaming services. Microsoft made it clear you can still use game emulators on Xbox, but it has to be in Dev Mode, not Retail Mode. The reason being is Dev Mode is sandboxed, Retail Mode is not.

I don’t have any that can’t be updated was just curious would the EU be happy older devices can’t side load
A lot of product categories have technology vendors unable to go back pass certain hardware requirements for updates, can’t imagine some kind of wording that’s not in this EU action that doesn’t clarifies that. The question was interesting. ;)

But. Malware already exists. Which people love to point out here. That already means the app model isn’t perfect and has flaws. So it’s going to turn a garden hose into a fire hose. Going to make it much faster and much more than before.

You mean more like adding a straw to the garden hose. Not sure where you get the idea it would be a firehose. That makes absolutely little sense.

Epic is looking more for something like an Epic App Store app like the OnePlus Store or Samsung Store or .. that you can either install from the App Store or come pre-loaded. They do not want to have to jump through the current Android side-load hoops (if allowed). App Store or Play Store level access instead of F-Droid or stand alone apk. If Epic has their way we would need an App Mall or Play Mall instead of a store or side loading.

JMHO

In that case you are all for the coercion that comes with a company store. That is what we currently have with Apple.
