I am debating with myself whether to install the RC of 18.1 or stay on 18.0.1 because there the battery life is good with my 15 Pro Max…
What do you guys think ?

Sometime in the future I have to update - so what’s your opinion?
If you’re not experiencing battery issues on 18.0.1 and you’re not eager to rush to get AI, I suggest waiting a couple of weeks. Wait and see if there are any significant bugs or battery optimization changes that need to be addressed.

I personally made the switch to B7 and now RC because my 16 Pro battery isn’t performing well. The jury is still out on RC, but I believe it might offer only a slight improvement. However, I wouldn’t risk compromising good battery life by jumping on RC.

I have noticed a few purple arrows continually on in location services system settings. Might be as intended and cannot recall which were purple on my old iPhone. Eg alerts, compass, motion calibration, find my, networking and suggestions.
I have always had everything toggled on.

Having said that my battery drain in idle today has been so much better. No idea what has changed after almost 4 weeks. I’m still in 18.0.1. Maybe something Apple server side?

Can’t believe my eyes, iOS 18.1 performing much better.

6 hours of on screen time including almost 6 hours of music via cellular data. Now this is what I expect from

Is 5G available to you? Surely it would be the more efficient option? Your observation of how well 4G and 5G compare is not really a scientific analysis. Maybe 5G is too spotty in your area?

Curious to learn why you think 4G is best for you, as it's now older tech.
Unless I’m out of date 5G is still more battery hungry than 4G. My only data use is syncing calendar and contact entries, getting mostly text-only WhatsApp messages, syncing my reading position in Kindle, some banking apps and occasionally looking stuff up in Wikipedia or reading mostly text-only news. I never stream anything (all my media is stored on my phone) and I rarely surf the web on my phone. Basically my data usage is so low, I typically use about 1GB per month of my 5GB allowance, that speed (bandwidth) really isn’t an issue for me so I lock my phone to 4G-only to maximise battery life.

Anyone else noticed on 18.1 RC the background updating / indexing pop up notice no longer appears.

I conducted a little experiment over the past few nights. Since I got my 16 Pro on launch day, I've been charging it with the 95% limit. Last night, I decided to try charging it to 100% using optimized charging. Just as I remembered, this was even worse than the 95% limit. I really hope Apple resolves this issue soon.

What was worse about it

Under system services, do you have all the location intensive system services enabled and signifiant locations enabled? How about Find My iPhone, do you have it enabled? Do you have Find My Network enabled?

What do you mean by location intensive system services?

And yes I do use find my iPhone. I feel like that is a must.

It saves much battery! And all of the disabled you don’t need.
Don’t know the YouTube channel but I got from ex-employees of Apple the information

Edit: found it - everything’s explained here:

You can disable some like network search, suggestions and merchant identification (if you don't have Apple Card) as those won't degrade any functionality but I don't think disabling others would bring about any noticeable battery savings.
I'd only disabled handful of services and some of them don't even have the purple arrow most of the time so there's no real benefit to disabling them completely. Personally, I'd rather not rack my brain trying to fig out why a specific app or service doesn't work in the future.

You can disable most of them, saves battery !

I have the exact same settings and also have significant locations (at the bottom) turned off too (can't see in your screenshot). Yes, it makes a difference. The other post with the video is a good reference. He explains it really well.

Also to note, apple says for optimized charging to work you need Significant Locations and System Customization toggled on, I've found that optimized charging still works with those off.

I have the same services as you enabled + system customization and Apple merchant (I have an Apple Pay and Apple Card)

One suggestion, Enable system customization, it is said to be beneficial to optimized battery charging to function properly.

I’d be curious to hear if you notice any difference once you disabled some of these system services that we discussed in the last couple of posts in this thread
Which ones would you recommend disabling? This is peculiar to me because I’ve never encountered this issue before. Therefore, having to disable these settings to achieve good battery performance feels like a step backward.
