It's not valid it's just plain weird. People have private stuff on their phones. At the same time people have super useful stuff on their phones that kids, family members and others might want to momentarily use. That you think everyone, not just you, but everyone should be obliged to resolve this tension by clutching their phone like a guilty pervert and buying the other party a separate phone is super weird.
It is valid. That is why you are getting so defensive over my post/s. If it wasn't a big deal and didn't bother you, you would've just scrolled on. Anyway, go ahead and hide your apps. Have fun with that.

This feature could also come in handy if your phone was ripped from your hands unlocked. That would be my use case. Along with stolen device protection.
This has happened exactly zero times to me, or anyone I've known since cell phones came about. I'm not worried about it. If you are worried about it, by all means use these features though. That is more valid than just straight up being shady and hiding things from your family/friends.

Goodness, everybody's assuming the worst here. How about it's just another layer of security? Extreme example - my phone gets stolen, they saw my passcode or held my eyes open and forced me at gunpoint to unlock it (/s), and then they can't find a few key apps that I don't want them getting into because they're hidden. It's not perfect, but it's just another thing that will slow them down a bit while I log into iCloud and erase/lock/reset it. 🤷‍♂️

Your anecdotal opinion does not help those who it has happened to. If you believe it’s to hide stuff on your phone from others who may have your phone in their hands that’s certainly a valid opinion but clearly will help those who may have their unlocked phone taken by others.

I would argue that maps should 100% be able to be locked, because anybody who can open maps can see a history of places you’ve searched for

Only Face ID locking...
This sort of locking should absolutely require a difficult password
The whole phone is already locked with Face ID. How is this any more secure.
Hopefully they smarten up and add that.

FYI Samsung has had this sort of thing for many years.

Why are some people taking this so personally that someone else wants to exercise their right to privacy? It's really weird. People have a right to keep things private, even from a parent or spouse.
There are probably dozens of reasons to do this. Abuse victims can better hide the apps they are using to find help or support. Queer people who can't be out or aren't ready can more safely use apps that could out them with a prying glance. Must take some privilege to be able to scoff at a new tool in the privacy toolkit. Go touch grass.

Why are you being so defensive about a valid point?

You are oddly obsessed with this subject. If you don't want to hide apps on your phone then good news, that's already the default option. If you do want to hide something or make it inaccessible because you want to hand your phone to others then good news, this will soon be an option. Your ability to understand why others might want this feature is completely irrelevant to those who do want it and believe they have a good use case. Honestly, Your many many comments attacking this feature make it look like you're angry because you're worried about who might use this to hide things from you. If you're some overbearing control freak then I can see how this might be of concern for you. Otherwise its surprising how many comments you've made on this almost throw away feature that you are under no obligation to use.

Agree with the last statement to a degree, but there should still be some level of protection. "Just don't search for information" isn't how I want to live my daily life. We have come to expect freedom of travel and commerce within the US without anyone questioning or having the right to know. Now there are active attempts at changing that expectation.

"Just don't search for information" wasn't necessarily the point I was trying to make, but rather that creating a record on your phone and then protecting this information on your device is likely the wrong way to go about this.

Rather, you would want your queries just not to be logged server-side and no search history saved on your device.

It's a sad reality that people seeking medical treatment have to consider their opsec like drug smugglers, but it's the world we live in apparently.

Found a glitch. If you go to Settings>General>Transfer or Reset iPhone>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout all the apps that were hidden reappear on the Home Screen but are still gone elsewhere such as Spotlight Search and the list of apps in Settings. To make them reappear you need to select Don’t Require Face ID.

Edit: The Settings app can’t be Face ID protected so anyone could go to Reset Home Screen Layout and reveal all the hidden apps on the Home Screen. They still show in the hidden folder despite not being hidden anymore.
Did you report it?
Thats the daily mail. Its not really a good source of anything except claptrap.

Hey guys, quick one, im on the IOS 18 Developer beta, and i have tried the hidden app function, however once hidden, and in the hidden app folder, how do it get the app back out?

I was testing this out but cannot find any troubleshooting on this. Any help?

This is face id or passcode locking....either one of these two would work....not just face id.

how this is useful......when it still can accept passcode.

someone would casually ask us to give the password or can look at the passcode that we type, sometimes, while unlocking the device.

sometimes, if we give unlocked phone to someone, then they would look/ask for the passcode if phone gets locked...and the same passcode can be used to unlock any app.

this is a useful feature..but not 100%...I may be wrong
So all it takes to get your passcode is to CASUALLY ASK? Oh my.

Any system security is only as strong as its weakest link. In this scenario... the user.

I wish this worked the other way round.

Recognize if someone else other than myself looks at the phone, and then lock them to the app that they are in, i.e. I give someone my phone to look at Netflix, but they can't get out of Netflix and all notifications are silenced.

You can do that already, it's called Guided Access, though I'm not sure it blocks notifications.

Exactly - or, limit access to one photo album only, so you can e.g. pass your phone around the table and people would only be able to scroll through the pics in that one album. That's long overdue!

Not perfectly. The "guided access" only deactivates some areas of the screen, so all you need to do is to swipe the app up, rotate the screen or pretty much anything that even a 5-ears old manages to do in two seconds 😀
