Don’t upgrade first day, don’t upgrade first day, don’t upgrade first day, don’t upgrade first day, don’t upgrade first day…. Don’t. Upgrade. First. Day.

Heck, give it a month!
Public beta day1… do it 😀
You will.

Or ever. I’m still pushin’ iOS 16 and intend to keep it that way until entropy kills my current handset. BloatWare 18 isn’t even on my radar.

What I’m hearing from industrial chatter is that iOS 18 is complete re-write of OS.

And Apple is going to make security the biggest emphasis In addition to RCS And new Siri.

Reason: Sideloading.

Also, iOS 18 will likely allow sideloading worldwide, thanks to these security changes. (Chances are releasing sideloading to EU first on iOS 17.4 will allow Apple to refine security on iOS 18 using real world data) [EU won’t allow sideloading to EU only on iPhone. Regulators there will force Apple to make side loading available worldwide. And also make sideloading avalible to iPads as well. Apple wanted to make side loading avalible first on iOS 18, but EU won’t allow Apple to delay it anymore.][
Why would any of that require a complete rewrite? Not only would that be a massive waste of time and money at a time when Apple’s focus is clearly split (with the launch of Vision Pro) but it would likely result in a less stable OS for at least a few years.

Since I have had an iPhone 2G I have wanted to be able to put icons and now widgets exactly where I was on the Home Screen… Come on Apple, make me happy, no more snap to grid.

I have been waiting 11 long years from them to restore the look and feel of iOS 6. Maybe that will finally happen here and ditch this horrible design.
I think it would be great if they can modularize the OS a bit

Say you have the basic OS… its stable efficient and can run on older iphones

Then you have optional modules that can add features etc.. say different skins, different OS functionality or stock apps… or even say a Samsung DEX like module so that the latest Pro models can be docked to a monitor and bluetooth to keyboard and mouse etc….

At the moment everything is lumped in one big update whether you like it or not.

While I understand all the Siri hate on here people should be aware that Apple recently published one of the best multi-modal models out there. So it could be a super significant upgrade, particularly given that Siri could have access to literally every line of code in iOS along with every other Apple app. So the potential for deep integration/automation is significant.

My money is still on the bulk of "AI-Siri" being exclusive to iPhones 16 and beyond, if not completely exclusive to iPhones 16 and beyond.

If Apple makes the Siri Apple Health query questions exclusive to Apple Watch Series 9 then how is anyone expecting Apple to make the revamped "AI-Siri" available on any device that doesn't have an "AI Co-Processor"?

Would be a surprise for me if all iPhones running iOS 18 gets some or all of "AI-Siri". But then maybe the trick is that it's super slow unless you got anything older than an iPhone 14 or 15?

They'll find a way to make us want to upgrade. That much I know by now.

My other prediction is that, outside "AI-Siri", not much else will be different about iOS 18 compared to 17.

The potential and technology definitely is there. And they're going to use it in most post iPhone 16 products.

The only big question for me is whether Apple goes full out with it for iOS 18 and iPhones 16 or if we're going to have to wait several generations before we see the full "AI-Siri" revamp.

I'm hoping they aim to make a leap ahead the competition and give it some kind of edge even now in 2024.

all i want is SiriOS, powered entirely by Siri. everything is customizable because Siri just does it.

and yes, it's absurd that you can't customize this yet.
The sad thing is that Apple has had the blueprint for an actual useful Siri, the Knowledge Navigator video THEY produced in 1987. Yes 36 years ago!! The technology now exists to do almost everything seen in that video. Yet we sit here with Siri, the dumbest personal assistant ever.

"Smarter Siri" isn't hard to do when Siri barely left the warehouse with a single braincell and hasn't improved much since.

Siri has improved massively, but you've refused to see it. It's not yet in the "generative" realm that we keep hearing about, but in terms of improvement, Siri of 2024 is way more powerful than Siri of 2010.

For those that think that Siri is not powered by AI, it definitely is powered by the Machine Learning subset. Here's the Wiki description of the 2010 version...

Siri is a spin-off from a project developed by the SRI International Artificial Intelligence Center. Its speech recognition engine was provided by Nuance Communications, and it uses advanced machine learning technologies to function.

But the Siri of tomorrow will catch up to the ChatGPT's of the world now that generative AI has matured.

I appreciate that Apple has played it safe. ChatGPT is an opt-in technology... users need to go to it. Siri is built into iPhones. It could be disastrous if done incorrectly.

That wasn’t a blue print. That was a concept video. That’s like watching Star Trek and wondering why we haven’t colonised the universe.

I would like to see:
1. Theme store
2. Manual icon placement
I keep forgetting that it's still not supported to to arrange the home screen. It's such a basic feature - the first & most accessible screen that the user opens should contain what the user finds most useful.

It's wild how the iPhone is the user's deeply-personal constant companion, but Apple doesn't want to give these personalization options.

If people think RCS support and Siri upgrades = the "biggest upgrade" in the history of iOS... We're in trouble for the future of the platform. Even if Siri were to be completely redesigned and have the same ability as Google Assistant and ChatGPT (plus some additional functionality) it's still far from being the biggest upgrade.

Let's not forget iOS 6 to iOS 7. It literally changed every visual aspect of the operating system. That's an upgrade that affected 100% of iOS users... Siri changes? That'll affect maybe 40% of users.

Most likely iOS 18 will not support iPhone Xs, Xs Max and Xr. So since I am still using an iPhone Xs Max, I will not care about what Apple has planned for iOS 18. I am planning on waiting for an iPhone 17 Pro.
Maybe it's better to wait for the 18 pro. The next one will always be better!

You will.

Don't do it!! I quit checking out betas two or three years ago; they give nothing but headaches.

These days, I just let my phone auto-update when it decides it's time. No reason to get in a rush.
