I really hope that tonight (GMT8 0200 19th Feb) we'll get our hands on the 18.4 beta 1, and hopefully, it will offer a sneak peek of Apple Intelligence with local language support for CN and EU users (ahead of the official launch with the 18.4 release). However, there's a chance the beta could be released after Apple's launch event on the 19th. Either way, it’s highly likely to happen this week!

Seeding is available at 10 am pst. What is it about this that requires a time delay? Tim is talking up the SE and some other products, and after that we are supposed to wait? Strange?
Yeah, I think today is more likely. Dropping iOS 18.4 Beta 1 the same day as the new hardware could split press attention between the two. I think a beta today to create some pre-new hardware hype, and then new hardware event tomorrow. 👍🏻

Not "feeling it" today again...Don't know. Again, I think we would have more "leaks" and chatter on X about 18.4 if we're about to get preview of it today. This beta cycle has been weird.
That assumes Apple would provide advance development details when they never do except with WWDC developer preview for devs the first month. I am saying follow up point release details rely mostly on the WWDC documentation not any particular grouping with a point release.

They will not drown the new iPhone announcement with negative news surrounding missing Apple Intelligence features in 18.4.
People interested in a lower cost phone aren't a huge overlap on the venn with the people who are aware of beta cycles or reading tech news. Furthermore, Apple never said those features were part of 18.4. That was all Gurman. The Apple Intelligence page has just said "in the coming months" since September.

i wanna test the alpha builds of iOS 19 already

I was thinking tomorrow also, but didn't realize the SE announce is Thursday.. could that imply there's something additional to say about iOS 18 plans for AI? If not, doesn't need to be related really. If so, it makes sense to drop 18.4 beta after the announcement

I think today is pretty likely. I think we need to start beta testing for 18.4 this week. So then it’s just a matter of figuring out what day this week. Monday was pretty much ruled out by being President’s Day, and tomorrow is also likely ruled out because I don’t think Apple usually drops first betas the same day as they announce new hardware. I can’t imagine that they would want split press focus between the new hardware and the new beta. So I’m guessing it’s either today or possibly Thursday, but I’m leaning towards today. Wednesday is a possibility, but I just think it’s less likely that they will announce the new SE and 18.4 in the same day, unless there’s some special feature that the SE will support in 18.4, but I doubt it because the SE is a base-model budget device, it will likely be fairly similar chassis to the iPhone 14 or maybe the 15. So it wouldn’t likely have any new hardware buttons or anything like the iPhone 16 lineup did.

Also, 9to5Mac said today was likely the day. 👍🏻

Outside of sites like MacRumors, how much press does a beta release to developers usually get?
Quite a bit, especially with the rumored scale of this update. I think 18.4 could actually possibly even get more press than the SE given the number of features it’s purported to bring. The SE is a budget phone, it gets some coverage, but not near as much as a full iPhone flagship release in the fall…

Also, consider that this will be the first update to bring Apple Intelligence to the rest of the world, so it will likely be a pretty big deal and attract a decent amount of media attention just for that alone… 👍🏻

Gurman will put it in his newsletters, but not on the main Bloomberg page. But that means sites like The Verge and Engadget and such start posting about it too. So if you regularly read tech news, you come across rumors reported as news a little too regularly. They occasionally cover the actual betas, but usually just the same rumors you see here.

I would think, most users, unlike the ones on this forum, would be largely unaware of beta releases and only concerned with the final releases.

Yes, but most tech news outlets will likely report about the first beta for a major update like this. This will be the first update to bring Apple Intelligence to other parts of the world, which in and of itself is a big deal, but it’s also rumored to add quite a lot of new features. It’s not because it’s a beta that draws attention, but because it gives us our first glimpse at all the new changes that 18.4 will bring when it releases.

Most people I know don’t know there is an update until I tell them.

Neighbors phone was having issues and she asked me to look at it. It hadn’t been updated in over a year. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Yes, but most people probably will also not know about a new iPhone SE model on day one either by that token. But virtually all of the tech news media that would cover a new iPhone SE would also cover the first beta for this update…
