No it doesn’t. It means within a year from today. Which is mostly within the iOS 18 update cycle since we’re near the beginning of the year, and iOS 19 won’t be released until near the end of this year… Every single article that has referenced this has said the timeline Apple is talking about is this year, just later than expected…
"Siri helps our users find what they need and get things done quickly, and in just the past six months, we've made Siri more conversational, introduced new features like type to Siri and product knowledge, and added an integration with ChatGPT. We've also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps. It's going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year."

“…we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year."
That refers to the year starting from today. That doesn’t automatically mean 2026. It’s like someone says “I want to not eat as many donuts in the coming year” on New Year’s Day. That doesn’t mean the next year after the year you’re starting. People commonly use “the coming year” to describe the year that we’re beginning into…

Ok, so they claim that in the title, but the Apple spokesperson didn’t say 2026, and nowhere in their article do they prove or even claim it will be in 2026…. They even say the features could debut in 18.5. So, no, this doesn’t mean a delay into 2026…

Agreed. But 18.4 goes to GR in April. 18.5 beta will be GR in May/June. Then we start the iOS 19 beta cycle. Personal Siri may be backported to 18.x eventually to avoid a class action lawsuit, but it is definitely an iOS 19 feature now. Might be in the 19.0 or 19.1 beta, but wouldn't be at all surprised if we are getting this next Feb/Mar.

That is true however it doesn't make sense for Apple to take the bad PR of announcing a delay if it was going to come anytime soon.

Yes, but we still have most of a year until iOS 19 will actually be released to the general public. I don’t believe a feature added to iOS 18 after iOS 19 is in beta would automatically become an “iOS 19 feature”. That doesn’t logically follow to me… I’m thinking we’ll still see these features rollout in a later 18 update like 18.5, 18.6, 18.7, etc. 👍🏻

I don’t think it’s coming soon like in 18.4. 18.5, 18.6, etc. are all quite a ways away still, so I could see the features dropping in those updates or perhaps even later in 18.7, etc. 👍🏻

Just to continue playing Devil's Advocate: I will point out that Apple released iOS 17.7 on Monday, September 16, 2024, along with iOS 18. It contained no new features. Just security vulnerability patches and some optimization for battery and wireless issues.

Don't want to dump too much cold water on your optimism though. I wish I was a glass half-full person. Keep hope alive!

My money is on a lot of people being proved wrong and Siri not having what they said it would until 2026. I’ve read several articles over the last few weeks saying that. Even saw one that said it may not get here fully until iOS 20.

Apple got a late start and seems they may have bitten off more than they can chew. My opinion is that it’s more difficult to implement AI the way Apple wants to versus how Sammy and Google are. We will see

Kal you’ll defend Apple until your dying breath won’t you?

___

The way I read their statement is that they are so far behind that they can’t even give us an estimate, besides an entire year! Crazy.

A. How is pointing out that the statement doesn’t necessarily mean the features will be delayed until iOS 19 equal that I’m “defending Apple until my dying breath”?

B. Most here are Apple fans. Defending Apple isn’t a bad thing, and yes, I think Apple is worth defending.

I was being a little hyperbolic. I’m an Apple fan as well as everyone who is disappointed. I think Apple is worth criticizing, unless you want them to turn to 💩 then people can keep making excuses for them.

Sure, I’ve shared some criticisms of Apple before. I think there’s a place for some constructive criticism. I just don’t think this delay is a big deal, and I don’t think the features will necessarily be delayed into iOS 19. I think there’s a good chance that they’ll come in a later iOS 18 release. Note that the article even says that the features may roll out in iOS 18.5.

Gurman is now saying next year "at the earliest" in the article linked above.

Unfortunately that would mean that they would miss the timeline given on this advertisement which might get Apple into legal trouble for being misleading.

I don’t think so. Note how intentionally vague they were with “some features will be coming over the next year”.

Yeah but in any rational world that clearly would not include the feature being advertised lol.
Sure, but there’s common sense, then there’s legalese. I can almost guarantee you Apple is legally protected.

Here’s some Friday night reading for everyone to do-

There’s some eye opening stuff in here. People have every right to be frustrated with Apple here, it was dumb for them to advertise features far before they were ready. But a class action lawsuit would be a waste of time.

Just think about it. There’s a reason why a successful class action lawsuit was never brought forward over the disastrous Maps overhaul in 2012.

I think you are wrong. But assuming your statement is correct "It means within a year from today. " A year from today we will be on iOS 19 not 18.

He means “within the next year”. So anytime between tomorrow and a year from now.

Could these features make their way to iOS 18? I guess. But the fact that they’re giving themselves a year of leeway doesn’t make me feel good about it.

I absolutely love my 16 pro max, I would not be interested in a lawsuit lol. BUT, I bought it solely for the bigger screen size. I came from a 15 pro max, so I would have already had the (albeit laughable) AI features.

That being said there is no excuse for this, IMO.

Being legally protected has nothing to do with class action lawsuits. A class action is all about a group of people getting enough press and making enough noise that the targeted company agrees to a payout rather than see anything proceed to trial. Nothing will be proven in court and there is no admission of guilt. Apple pays out class action settlements every year. Just recently there was an Apple Watch one, a Siri privacy one, and the employee bag search one.
