Whats New in iOS18?

  • Maps now features topographic maps with detailed trail networks and hikes, including all 63 U.S. national parks. Save maps to your device to access offline with turn-by-turn voice guidance, or create your own hikes.
  • Save hikes for offline access - Browse thousands of hikes that you can save to your device — along with any notes you want to add.
  • Create and save custom walking and hiking routes with just a few taps. Choose different route options, including “one way,” “out and back,“ or a loop.
  • POI icons have a more 3D/gradient look to them

I’m still waiting for Apple maps to get the speed zones correct. They are correct in Waze and Google maps.

Same highway has incorrect speed listed north bound, but correct south bound.

Look around still pretty limited in the US. We’ve now blown past every gate I could think of that might be the release trigger. Nada.

I now predict it will be released alongside the WatchOS watch face store.

Well...I've been holding back (due to constant disappointment)...but ready to make my bold prediction:

LookAround and DCE features (trees, road markings, elevations...maybe some new POI's) pre-released countrywide in both the US and UK in August for full release at the launch of the IP16 in mid-September. Done.

Yea seriously hoping for some more clear signs they’re testing this summer with announcements at Sept event since they said nada at WWDC 🥲🤞🏼

I fear that nothing will happen before Apple updates the data in the Paris region. Apple collects images until June 24 so it may have time to process and update them on Maps. I also bet that Apple will add colorful buildings for the event so Apple must work hard right now so that everything is ready for the Olympics in Paris.

It's subtle..but there..and I immediately noticed it when running Maps after the update.

Here is Maps on my Mac running current software...POI icons are basically flat images.

Screenshot 2024-06-17 at 10.13.14 AM.png

And here is a similar shot off of my iPhone running iOS18. POI icons have a slight gradient on the lower right hand side giving them more of a 3D look.

Yeah…I’ve been testing this. Maps still automatically searches for the same search request as you love the map…especially if you don’t change the zoom level, so not really sure why this was implemented.

Maybe to let people know that they can still search if nothing shows up?

I just haven’t seen enough of a difference to see why the new button was added.

I have struggled to get the automatic re-search to work in the past, so I’m glad they added it! I live and work in different cities, so I am often searching both cities when planning things out.

It never did that for me in the past, it only searched near me. Now it automatically searches and has the button, which is strange, but better than before definitely

Not sure, as the whole of France has already been covered by Look Around and Paris in particular got it covered, with pretty 3D trees and all. So the landmarks in Paris are pretty much covered. Of course Apple may want to update/fine-tune stuff, but I am not sure it is their number one priority.

PS This is how it currently looks in iOS 17.5.1, btw.

I’m not saying that this is such an instance, but sometimes these seemingly oddball features make much more sense after the new phones are introduced.

There was an Apple Maps info ad in a Swedish newspaper (DN) today, informing that they will be surveying Sweden (again) both by car (whole country, starting today) and by foot (Stockholm, later this summer).

You will see. In my opinion, Apple will bring special attention to global events such as the Olympics and the Football World Cup.
