Really needs to be noted in this article that the custom route feature is NOT specific to walking/hiking. It also applies for driving routes as well where it is VASTLY more useful and more widely appreciated.

Not sure why this was written as if it was specific to the hiking feature. C’mon macrumors editors!!

Right now it is implemented in a really weird way. If I select a final destination (“A”), AM finds it, then I choose “Custom Route” from the “Plus” menu and add a point I would like the route to pass through (“B”), then the AM creates a route between the points A and B, not considering my current location (“C”) at all. To make things more complicated, it would route me from A to B, so I would need to change the routing directions. Super messy!

The one basic feature I’m really missing in maps is typing the address. For my work I’ve to visit people. When I enter the street name and house number I’ve to type the whole street name before I can enter the house number. Dutch street names can be quite long. So when I’ve to visit someone living in the same street, I’ve to type all over again. Would be very basic if you could alter the house number instead of typing everything again. Google maps does this very good. You could select, while typing, the street name. Enter the house number and voila… you’re ready to go. Saves tons of time. Is there a possibility for I’ve overlooked?
Alas, you havent overlooked anything. Apple Maps just isn't a very good mapping tool, especially outside of the US. And the added features are being rolled out so freaking slow...it's mind-boggling how Apple is going about it.

Look at the feature availability list...it's pathetic:

Hiking maps is a cool feature for short stints or well-marked paths, but it's going to take a lot to dethrone AllTrails. There needs to be some more competition in the hiking map arena.

When I'm backpacking, I print my maps out and put them in a waterproof sleeve as a backup, and then use my phone or handheld gps, if needed. I don't see any export/print options with Apple. Hiking with a buddy today and he is running the beta. We"ll see how it goes!

I know different countries do things differently, but have you tried putting the numbers in first?

Not sure the goal is to replace trail apps, but it’s great for casual hikers like myself. I don’t have to pay fees for mapping anymore.

So custom routes is only for hiking? I stopped using Apple Maps years ago because it would change my route mid-way through on its own. I often would specifically choose a path because I knew they traffic would be bad, for example through Orlando, and about an hour into my trip it would just change the route without notice and decide it was going to take me through there anyway.

Apple Maps is ok for local, but not for long distance trips. Also, the suggestions are ok for going to work or going home, but the fact that it put in a suggested destination EVERY time I got in the car was annoying. I had to turn the feature off.

1. Still no Music integration in Maps. Le sigh. I just want to be able to see the currently playing song, be able to pause/play, and skip to the next song. Google handles this really well.

2. Apple has been doing better about listing businesses but they need to step it up. I can zoom in on a strip mall with say 10 stores and Apple Maps will have one listed. So then I have to use Google Maps which will list everything. Businesses tend to not register with Apple (which is their fault) but Apple needs to pick up the slack here.
You can basically do everything you mention in point 1 using the dynamic island.

Can "Custom Routes" feature work for driving too? Must the route from start to end be put in before commencing the route? Would love a feature that can track a route I'm about to start driving, and then add it as a custom route to share with people I know (would be very handy for both walking trails and doing on a nice drive).

It really needs live alternative route suggestions to avoid traffic. Then it’d be really useful. Until then I have to listen to Karen via Google giving me orders.
I want a feature added to maps which tracks the route I'm about to drive where I can instruct Siri to “track this driving route” and “end tracking”, rather than manually going into maps and painstakingly preplanning a route. Then I could save and potentially edit a driving or hiking route with ease. If I'm mostly familiar with a driving route and wish to save it as an Apple Maps route having the app track my driving rather the needing to first input it manually into the map would be much easier for me. Both tracking en route and custom pre-trip direction instructions are needed. It is my understanding route tracking is not yet a feature in Apple Maps 😢

Maybe I got you wrong, but doesn’t Apple Maps do this already (iOS17)?
On my last weekend trip (~1200km in one direction, drove from Austria through Germany to Belgium), I got rerouted twice because of traffic. I just had to confirm it when it told me that there is a faster route.

Been doing it for a while. I am in the US. Not sure about rest of the world.

Thanks for the tip. Didn’t know this was possible and just tried it out. I’ve still have to type it again (part of the street name) but it solves the problem half.

Google maps handles this a lot easier and I wish Apple takes a look and copy this.

It does that for me, too. US, as well.

Have you checked out any of your local trails? How up to date are the hiking maps?

I wonder where they are getting their trail info?

BTW, sorry yesterday for my responses to you on the EU Epic story. I was pretty jazzed up and acting like a jerk. No excuse, just wanted to apologize.

To this day I believe that the Apple Maps team all drive teslas and don't use the maps app outside of work.. I still use it as I wouldn't trust google maps with my data but simplistic things like taking public transit with Apple Maps in the Bay Area still doesn't recommend using SF airport's own AirTram instead some random bus that barely comes.

That’s all very well, but what really tees me off is that, in particular while driving, is that the orientation at the start of the drive, is all over the place. Example, it’s showing go left, or right? So I have to guess, and sure enough I go the direction I think it’s trying to tell me. But after 5 or six seconds, the map flips 180 degrees and I’m going the wrong way! If apple could integrate the compass, at least at the start, in order to get the map sortet. Is this problem due to the satellite orientation? The other bug for me anyway, is if you drive past your destination, lets say 20 meters, instead of telling me to turn around, it tells me to continue straight on and essentially reroutes me to make a huge loop, adding another mile or two to the journey. I really wish Apple would fix this.

What I want is to search for gas stations and rest stops along my route. At the moment it’s not working at all, showing stops 20-25 minutes away from the highway while there are plenty of suggestions to be made along the highway. Weird.

And yes: after all these years, business info is still total crap compared to Google.

I live by a large local park system and all the trails are there.

Edit: No worries, I generally try to get people to think bigger picture.

Regarding hiking. Will Apple Maps record a track? That is the reverse of plotting out a route to hike. I may hike a bluff line, for instance, and investigate several areas not on any specific trail. And later, I might want to take friends back to those areas to show what I discovered. The ability to record my tracks and then use them as a future route is really why I have GPS apps now.

Really? I have travelled all over the country using only Apple Maps in my RV. Or maybe a 2500 mile trip is not long distance to you.

I just wish Apple would focus on readability. If one pinches to zoom, the features are magnified by not the ****ing labels. Google maps is the same. Some of us have vision problems, and in traditional maps magnifying applies both to features and to labels. What is the purpose of a map if it isn't readable?
