I think I see what you mean. For instance, I think it’s handy that if you’re religious about calendar appointments, Maps can suggest what’s up next and directions to that place, but you’re saying, why can’t Maps write to the calendar to block off transit time? 🤔
It is an interesting idea for integrating app.

Currently, in map app, it will prompt the next destination per the event in calendar or Siri suggestion. Map is supposed not a scheduling app though.

The map integration to stock apps that I am long for improvement is the integration to Contact app.

straightforwardly, clicking the addr field in contact should bring you to map app showing the location. However, while Map app supports POI (though not as many as that supported by Google), addr in contact does not support POI but street addr only! It is so stupid!

On the other hand, Apple Map app is too street addr centric rather than coordination based. Hence, even a location of coordinates or POI entered on Map would somehow refer (mapping) to a street addr, which causes too much issues, for examples, locations on the same lot of land shared the same street addr, or a pinned location inaccurately mapped to a nearby street addr causing issues upon future referral.

1. Still no Music integration in Maps. Le sigh. I just want to be able to see the currently playing song, be able to pause/play, and skip to the next song. Google handles this really well.

2. Apple has been doing better about listing businesses but they need to step it up. I can zoom in on a strip mall with say 10 stores and Apple Maps will have one listed. So then I have to use Google Maps which will list everything. Businesses tend to not register with Apple (which is their fault) but Apple needs to pick up the slack here.
While the music stuff is nice, the number one thing I really don't get, is that they haven't made a Maps-view in the Apple Watch workout. Hiking, running or biking with navigation of routes can be a mess on Apple Watches where companies like Garmin has it build right in. Also would love Apple to use some of that AI power on automatic calculate routes for running when on vaccation like Garmin do. Select how long and generate. Or at lease import GPX files to Apple Maps so I can import my Strava generated routes for navigation on my watch?

It seems like Apples Maps team is doing some of the lifting here and not really speaking to the other teams :)

Almost all of Apple's built-in apps are getting new features in iOS 18, and that includes the Maps app. The Maps app isn't getting any fun new AI additions, but Apple does have some useful changes in store.

Hiking Trails

Apple added topographic maps to the Apple Watch last year, and now detailed topographic maps are also coming to the iPhone. The Maps app features detailed trail networks and hikes, including all 63 U.S. national parks.

You can do a search for "hikes" or "hiking routes" in the Maps app to see nearby trail options, with Apple including hike length, elevation, ratings, and other details.

Hikes can be filtered by length, route type (loop, point to point, or out and back), and elevation, and can be saved for offline access.

You can zoom into hiking areas to see specific trails, or search for trails. If you tap on a trail, Apple has information that includes length, highest point, lowest point, and distance. You can also see a full overview of the trail's path and get lengths for each section.

Trails and hikes are separate entities in the Maps app. A search for hikes essentially brings you to the general area where specific trails are located, and you can zoom in with the Maps app to find the trail you want to take.

Custom Routes

Apple Maps supports custom routes in iOS 18, so you can plan out a specific hiking route that you want to take. At a trailhead, you can tap on the "Create a Custom Route" option to initiate the custom routing experience.

From there, you tap on the map to begin setting points for your route, and the Maps app will provide length and elevation details. You can also have the Maps app finish a route automatically by tapping on the Reverse, Out and Back, or Close Loop options.

For hikes and trails, the Maps app will not let you create an unsafe route that does not stick to existing trails, so it's difficult to make a dangerous map out into the middle of nowhere.

Route creation is not limited to hikes and trails. You can add a pinned spot to a map, tap on the "More" option and choose Create Custom Route.

Search Here

Apple made it easier to search in locations you might be thinking of visiting or those you want to explore by adding a "Search here" button. If you look up a place, such as San Diego, and then tap on search, it'll search in the area that's on your screen rather at your physical location.

If you search for something and then pan around the map, the search will update reliably in the new location. When you zoom in, you'll see a dedicated "Search here" button that gives you more control over where you want to search.

Saving Favorites

If you find a favorite hike, trail, or custom route, you can save it to your Library to save it for later. To do so, find the relevant hike and then tap on the "Add to Library" button.

You can rename hikes and add specific information that you might want to revisit later, as well as download the route for offline usage.

Tapping on the "+" button when viewing any location on the map, including a hike, will also add that location to the library.

Favorites are stored in the Maps app and can be accessed by tapping on your profile picture and choosing the Library section.

Library

All saved content from the Maps app including locations, routes, guides, and pins are stored in the new Library section of the Maps app rather than in separate sections as in iOS 17.

The Library also shows all of your Recently Added content.

Notes

You can tap on any place in the Maps app and select the Add a Note option from the menu. From there, you can make a note about what you want to remember about a location.

Notes are private and are kept on-device. They are only visible to the note creator.

What I realy would like to see is the option to import GPX files

I feel like Apple, as an institution, doesn't understand that them re-inventing the wheel instead of being compatible with existing and established formats, only works when what they're doing is miles ahead of what came before.

None of the new Map features nor the service in general justifies refusing to interoperate with GPX files.

I'm sure Apple's lawyers have their hand in it. What if the AI routed you through a sketchy neighborhood and something happened to you? And, are companies even allowed to define sketchy neighborhoods? If I had to guess Apple lawyers forced them to back off on features like that.

Can I get Maps to suppress all the "apple map content"? I dont need guides or news in my maps app (or weather app).

The solution to this for everyone is user crowd sourcing of information and you can vote to agree or disagree with peoples recommendations and when enough high level reviewers agree then it get pushed to the maps.

I don’t think this is it at all. Other major players like Garmin, Strava etc. does this now. The issue might be Apples lack of data here?

Strava has millions of miles biked, run or walked all the time and can calculate routes based on others most run sections. Guess it’s the same with Garmin. Apple should have a ton with all the Apple Watches but maybe still not enough

I wish they would just improve the basic functionality of the app. If I'm searching for an address, why does some random place I've never been to come up before an address I've searched for 100 times? Why do I need to press close multiple times to get rid of a previous address (even after I've closed the app entirely and re-started). It seems like the app has just gotten dumber over the years.

i didn't see news in map, but those guides from commercials are fine as they provide the info the users may look for.

what i hate about the recent rev of map is prompting for installing another map app (amap from AutoNavi) once i turned off ride options. i like the map prompt me to use the apps i installed, in this case, Uber, but what the point they prompt me for installing an app i don't want.

to get rid of prompting for installing an unfavorable app, i have to turn off ride options, effectively unlinking the map integration with uber.

One thing I would love to have is automatic downloading of the maps around the route I'm on. Like say.. 3 miles on either side of the route. Dragging out a box to download is quick and handy but for many of the routes I travel that have spotty internet, it would have to download *wayyy* more than is really necessary. I just want to make sure my driving route is always available to me.

and yet google maps doesn't know that if i get in the car at 10AM, i'm most likely heading to my 10:30 appointment.
perhaps you have that information disabled/not integrated, google maps does do things like that for me.

YES! I thought I was the only one.

I have a contact who's house I go to about once a week, and happens to live in an area with some construction going on. There are two different ways I can go depending on the flow of traffic. I'll enter first name, last name in the search box and he's the third entry. Number one and two are over 200 miles away from me in Canada, I'm in the US, and both have an Irish "O'" in front of the surname that my buddy DOESN'T have.

There were times the 4th entry was placed higher than my buddy, who's on the other side of the country. Seriously?

Library and Notes alone are welcome additions. It's been a little bit hard for me to organize information in Apple Maps, this will help a lot. Google Maps has gotten worse in this regard, and seems to want me to make everything I do public by default.
yes, note is a nice addition. however, list of notes are not displayed under library, hence it is a bit hard to manage the notes if a few notes among a long list of locations.
