So u mean to twill me, 4.2 beta is working flawlessly and we still have to wait a whole month and a half. This is some ********.

Oh for gods sake!

There are still issues in the basic os and apple need to do wide scale testing to identify, fix and test bugs, hence the beta release. At the same time developers need time to upgrade and test their apps, again accomplished via the beta. And some functionality, specifically airplay and printing, clearly isn't ready yet.

Does that make it clear why we have to wait a while? Honestly, a little patience wouldn't go amiss here.

Nyone test printing?

on an iPod touch; it didn’t recognize my printer shared from a Vista computer. It’s possible that the computer is sleeping though. I’d have to go downstairs and check. My MBP doesn’t recognize that printer either, no matter what, so that could be the problem.

4.2 might be smarter than me. I can't seem to enable AirPlay.

Yeah, if the MBP isn't seeing the printer, there's a good chance the iPad won't either. I assume it's using some Bonjour magic to work over wifi.

Woah, I don't know if I missed this in the presentation or what, but the brightness control is now right in the multitasking bar (far left, next to iPod controls). Amazing!

Apple can make this into a full out replacement for SBSettings if they add a few more toggles...like wifi on/off switch, 3G switch...*drool*. :p

im hoping mobileme calender beta support has been added (eg.push calender, invites...)

magic trackpad

I realize it is probably wishful thinking, but can someone try the trackpad and see if it will operate in 4.2 please?
I'm curious to see if there might be an outside chance of it being able to be used as an ipad device.

thanks

I just tested out printing a PDF from Safari on an iPod touch. Everything worked....except for the printing part.

AirPrint doesn't work unless you installed the Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta. I don't know why you need that because it seems like the iPad can send print jobs directly to the printer, not to the computer, which then sends the print job to the printer. But that's what people have said, just read the front page of Macrumors.

Yeah, I installed that. If I hadn't, the printer wouldn't even show up.
I'll work on it more tomorrow, I hadn't looked into it that much.

I chose to print the PDF I was viewing in safari, chose the printer (which was shared via a wired connection to a MBP running 10.6.5 Delta) and then pressed print.
It said it was "sending to printer" and then that message went away, leaving me with the PDF open in safari again. The printer sat unresponsive. The same PDF printed fine from the MBP.

Edit: anybody notice the new Voice Memos icon?

Having problems with WiFi on iOS 4.2 on my iPad WiFi only. Works for about 2 minutes, then craps out completely. Nothing fixes it but a "Forget this Network" and a hard reset.

Could be the cruddy Netgear router or the equally cruddy Time Warner cable, but obviously I've got to be posting this somehow...

I lost my Angry Birds save file for this!! How could you do this to me!!! :D

It's a beta, expect bugs. I only installed it on my iPad because my iPhone is very crucial and critical to my work. I can't have it running beta software or a jailbreak because then I am prone to bugs and crashes. Unacceptable for work. Yes, jailbreak does cause problems. Lots of problems if you really know what is going on behind the scenes.

Yea, I expect Apple to address this soon. I can't keep losing my game saves with each new release. Not if Apple wants to use the "handheld gaming device" angle for the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

Something I noticed (or missed) -- I can't see my 3G usage any more when I go to Settings --> Cellular Data. Hmm... I keep my 3G off unless I actually need it, so I won't go over my 250mb, but I can't actually see or change my usage plan. Aah the joy of beta. :) I'm sure it'll be back in the next build.

Everything else works beautifully. Fast, smooth, no crashes.

Does the mute switch not work for anyone else? All this hoopla and it doesn't do anything on my iPad.

The switch that was screen orientation lock but has since changed to mute in iOS 4.2 works for me. It mutes and un-mutes the volume for me on iOS 4.2 beta. Is it different for you?

Yeah it does not work. Odd.

I get the overlay but audio continues to play.
