What would happen if I tried to install 4.2 Beta 1 on my iPad without having my UDID registered?

Nothing so far.... I received my copy from a non Apple source, not UDID stuff.

My iPad is running 4.2 Beta and hasn't crashed yet. That's in contrast to Safari crashing 3 times this morning on iOS 3.2.2

Yet to have any crashes in my most used apps.

So you just grabbed iPad1,1_4.2_8C5091e_Restore.ipsw from the internet and it installed without a problem?

My first impression is that AirPrint does not find my Brother DCP-770CW on the network :-(

Happy with multitasking though :)

Dont believe this. You need your UDID to be added to a developer account to let the firmware install, else it fails at the verifying point.

Cellular data issue

Hi all,

Has anyone had this problem?- After installing 4.2, the ipad thinks i don't have a cellular data account. Also, the APN settings and the 'view account' buttons have gone from the cellular network settings page.... I have cellular signal, but no account settings

Anyone?

I too have had this, I'm on O2 UK.

Someone here mentioned on the first page about either restoring from backup or setting up as a new iPad, I did the latter.

Whilst I still can't see account settings, I am able to use 3g now after using the unlockit.co.nz site via WiFi.

Has any functionality been added to the built Photo's app which has always been more "Eye Candy" than really useful?

I and others have been waiting for two very basic, but obvious requirements.

1: Can we create new picture folders on the iPad in iOS4.2

2: Can we drag photo's into folders (arrange them how we want)

So very basic things I'm amazed they were not in place from day one.

I'm hoping they have addressed these two things.

1. Nope, not that I see.

Yes, in the end I found that site and made a custom settings file. For anyone else doing so, the details need to be:

address: ibrowse.o2.co.uk
user: browse
password: password

I can confirm that my USB keyboard still works with the camera connection kit in iOS 4.2 beta 1. I just tried it in notes :).

Also 4.2 is running great for me as well. :)

Thanks very much for letting me know.

Must admit I'm a little disappointed they did not add some extra basic functionality here, but I knew I was being very optimistic.

I guess I shall now move my optimism that The ability to make a new folder and drag images into it (so they don't all end up in one clump that you can't to anything about unless you are docked back to a actual full computer) is added to the iPad v2 early next year.

I do so hope Apple cut, or at least trim the umbilical cord a little as the iPad matures, so it can be used more to create and edit things, without needed you to go back to a PC or Mac to do some basic things.

Thanks for reminding me. Using my USB keyboard as I type. Nice to have delete and arrow keys!

AirPrint doesn't work unless you installed the Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta. I don't know why you need that because it seems like the iPad can send print jobs directly to the printer, not to the computer, which then sends the print job to the printer. But that's what people have said, just read the front page of Macrumors.

There’s two parts to AirPrint.

Your printer has to natively support Apple’s new AirPrint standard in order to print directly from the iPad. HP is calling this ePrint. The way it works with Blackberry devices is the device would send the printed document to HP’s servers (via the Internet) and then HP’s ePrint server is transferring the document back to your Internet-connected printer. HP likely has local-only versions of this also. I’m sure Apple’s AirPrint works differently and probably uses Bonjour instead of HP’s technology.

The indirect method (and the method most iPad owners will use) is for the iPad to use Bonjour printer sharing where it sends the printed document to your Mac to do all the work. Your Mac takes the iPad document and uses the installed printer driver to communicate with the attached printer. That’s why 10.6.5 is required.

Only just noticed there's an option to turn off the picture frame on the lock screen. Good call.
