iOS 5: All the Little Things (Undocumented Features)

To enable the Emoji keyboard go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Add New Keyboard

Choose Emoji, then whenever you're typing, you'll see a globe beside the space bar allowing you to access emoji.

OMG!! Thank you so much for that tid-bit! I just came from a BB and was kind of missing a few of it's features. Now I'm getting back on track with all these "Little Things" which are BIG things for me and my new iPhone!

The dictation feature is my favorite new feature. It works really, really well. You can say various punctuation symbols to insert those (e.g., comma, period, colon), but I had a tough time figuring out how to insert a line break. I did some searching and I think I came across a manual for Dragon Dictation which uses Nuance and I believe that Nuance is what's used by the iOS dictation. Sure enough, the commands they use worked for iOS. So to insert a line break, you say "New Line" and to insert two line breaks, you say "New Paragraph".

I came across this in regards to sharing iCloud Reminders and Calendars that is not documented and REALLY cool. Created a Grocery list and shared it with my wife and we could both add and check items - just the way it should work.

I think I just found a feature that hasn't been posted, yet. I noticed that the alarm feature has been caching the past few alarms that I've set. I remember in iOS4, it would remember the last date/time of the alarm, but iOS5 seems to remember the past few different alarm times that have been set, making it easy to set multiple alarms and/or setting past alarms.

ok, so i have a 32gb fourth generation ipod touch, i had ios 4.1 on it and i had never upgraded it since i bought it, i jailbroked it like last year using greenpoison, anyways i wanted to upgrade to ios 5 so wat i did was to try to restore my ipod first, however when trying to resetore i got error 1602 and now it just says connect to itunes, i allready tried putting into recovery more and restoring it once again but it didnt work, and i tried jailbreaking it again wit the exact same greenpoison as before but that didnt work either!

wat can i do!?

You can now assign colours to Exchange calendars

Go into the Calendars app, click on Calendars and Edit. Only 7 colours but better than how it was previously!

At last! I can ditch CalDav now & go with Exchange.

No they aren't. The app switcher displays all previously used applications, whether they are currently open (occupying memory) or not. This is how it has always behaved.

If you have duplicate contacts in your iCloud Contacts List and your Exchange Contacts List, and you are viewing "All Contacts", it is displayed as a single contact under the heading "Unified Info" and it identifies the "Linked Cards".

It is not 100%, but close. I wish there were a way to force it to link the cards for the ones it missed, but I can't see how to do that.

You actually can manually link contact cards. Just go into the contact that you have duplicates of that have not been linked, click to edit the contact, scroll down, and then where it shows linked cards you can choose "link contact" and choose the contact you want to add to the list. Save and voila!

I just had to do this with a bunch of my contacts, as my transition from Android to iOS left a lot of duplicates in my address book

but now instead of the globe that button is now for dictation??

You can use the split keyboard on the iPad. Settings general keyboard spli. Then select through the keyboard arrow icon


You can "swipe" to advance through the days on your Calendar on the iPhone (this might be old)

You can tell if you are texting or iMessageing vie the blank line right before you start typing.

Split Keyboard is a Setting lol...it was set after the update and I thought it was a bug...PHEW!

I don't know if it's a new feature or not(or whether it's done through the OS or iCloud) as I have just now added a second iOS device but bookmarks on books are synced across devices. I can start on my iPad at the house and pick it up in the waiting room on my iPhone. Very very nice feature.

Autocorrect no longer tries to change hell to he'll. I HATED that. This alone was worth the time/hassle of upgrading to iOS 5.

I was sending an iMessage to a friend... and while it was still sending, I wanted to copy it so I can send it to another friend. I noticed the option to send as text message.

I don't have this option how did you do this?

u can copy pics in the new album but then u cannot delete the original pics out of the camera roll

I wish you could delete them after moving them to a different album. I take a lot of pictures of my dogs and would always delete them after going through iPhoto and what not to put them in their own folder.

I'm pretty sure you don't need the WolframAlpha app..Siri uses WolframAlpha when she needs it. Both of these examples work on my phone and I've never downloaded their app.

I have iCloud set up on my iPad and iPhone 4 and my games nor data is synced between the two how do you get that set up

think i just found another one, well at least i havnt seen it written anywhere...

If you tap any key on the keyboard with 2 fingers, it types it twice...

i.e
2 fingers on backspace goes back 2 spaces not 1...

i.e
letter O pressed with 2 fingers types OO on the screen.
