What's strange is that El Capitan on my late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro is smooth as butter. Way smoother than Yosemite ever was. So Metal seems to be working exceedingly well on the OS X side.
I have the same model and I don't experience any speed improvement over Yosemite. What actually feel faster for you?

Many things feel faster and smoother. On Yosemite, the Mission Control animation would become choppy over time, which could only be fixed by a restart. On El Cap, MC is super smooth and I haven't had to restart once. Also, Photos (among other things) is noticeably faster to launch. On Yosemite, I would launch Photos and the beach ball would appear for a couple seconds every time. Now, it launches almost instantly.
