The company said it was supported, that would be one reason.

My rule of thumb is 1 iOS update max. My iPad 2 is on ios7, and that was pushing it. My iPhone 4s went to 7 as well, and that was too far. My air is on 8, and there it will remain.

The company's motivation is to sell more (new) iPad's - not keep existing customers happy. So, they have no incentive to maintain your experience as time goes by, in fact they have a strong financial motivation to take every tacit opportunity to frustrate your experience and nudge you to buy newer hardware.

It's wrong to intentionally cripple a device that would've otherwise worked fine had the customer not upgraded to an ios that promised "improvements."

I live by the rule, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The same applies to my iPad's as well as FW updates to my PC's. Just because a firmware update is available for my BIOS doesn't mean I update my motherboard. I read what the changes or improvements are. If it doesn't apply to me, I skip it.

I treat iOS updates the same way. I've read enough complaints regarding iOS 8 and seeing Apple react by pulling one update due to it was causing problems. Not everyone has the same tolerance levels to system performance.

All my iPad's (3) ore not running iOS 8 because either I don't want the system performance hit or I don't care about the new features. In some cases regarding Safari, I don't like a couple of features listed in iOS 8. It's the same reason my iPad 3 is running iOS 5.1.1 to this day. It has certain features that I want that were removed in iOS 6.

I have gotten past the update badge displaying an update is needed on my iPad's.

Of course, that is why they only sell soldered in crap. If you choose incorrectly at purchase time, you are screwed. But that is different than intentionally causes useable iPads to have a horrible user experience. That is simply decpetive, and I hope apple is forced to pay for this reprehensible action.

Not sure why anyone would want to upgrade an almost 4 year old iPad with the latest iOS. That is just asking for it. I kept my iPad 3 on iOS 6 and never upgraded it. Smooth as butter.

That does pose a security issue. Unfortunately Apple refuses to serve 6.1.6 to iPad.

Forced by whom? The government struggles to go after insider trading, financial manipulators and other more egregious deceptive practices. There is no chance that anyone can successfully prosecute Apple for "slow" OS - whether it is intentional or not. They know it.

The manufacturer says the product is supported by the OS upgrade. The product becomes unusable(can make a reasoned argument) when the upgrade is applied. QED

Defend all you like. Courts should say apple must make restitution for lost usage of product.

I had the same issue.... the best thing you can do is restore your iPad and set it up as new . It now feels like I have a brand new iPad.

Your "reasoned argument" will the toughest thing to prove against the army of corporate lawyers.

Just need a judge who isn't bought and paid for. So you are correct, it would be difficult for the truth to be recognized.

The GPU failures did truly make the device "unusable" - it would just not work - not just slowly or sluggishly; it would show no display whatsoever.

However, a slow "OS" update can be argued that will not make the device "unusable". The device still works, albeit milliseconds, or even seconds slower. And even then there are people who claim that they perceive no difference.

You are right, no one can ever beat apple. Apple is blameless in all they do, and people should be thankful for Apple allowing us to buy their products.

I concede, you are a tireless apple defender, and have bested me. Congrats.

Enjoy your horrible ipad 2 experience folks. Just be happy you were even allowed, by apple, to buy one in the first place.

This is really less true for Apple than most hardware manufacturers, when you consider that they're selling not just devices but the software and services to run on those devices too. Many older iPad owners may have no desire to upgrade their hardware but will happily keep on buying new apps, music and other media, iCloud storage and so on for the iPad they already have - income which would all stop if they make that device unusable via an update.

Many other hardware vendors on the other hand literally have no interest in people actually using their devices. Once you've bought one, the only time they're going to see any more of your money is when or if you buy another.

The new update helped a lot. It is really back to being speedy again!

Same with my Sister's iPad 2. After the update it is not hesitating when opening apps, etc. Seems like it was when on iOS 7 last year. Yeah!

You know, instead of trying to undermine someone's credibility by calling them a "tireless Apple defender", why don't you just admit that it's okay to have a different point of view? And really, "people should be thankful for Apple allowing us to buy their products"? Please.

8.1.1 is out and addresses some of the issues with the ipad 2. I suggest snagging that now. I've seen some little usability improvements on my Air as well.

:)

Undermine credibility? He was simply saying that since some don't have issues, then there is no problem. I run into this a lot on these forums. One example of a working mac/mobile device, with the OS/iOS version in question, will yield lots of folks coming out of woodwork saying that there is no problem.

Another example is the tab reload issue on the iPad Air. Some people would defend Apple to the highest mountains. It didn't matter that others were able to produce videos of our issues.

So when the "credibility" is simply saying "There is no problem because some don't experience it", then I don't feel so bad in not really recognizing it.

Something tells me that iOS 7.1.2 is still better than iOS 8.1.1

Where does he even remotely imply that because some don't have issues, there is no problem? He says that a slow update doesn't make the device unusable. It obviously doesn't run as well as at did, but still being able to use it means it still works. He goes on to mention that some people won't even notice it, which is very true.

Of course, "not quite unusable" is pretty bad for an Apple device. Despite what some people seem to think, Apple doesn't want to make any iOS devices slow- doing so makes people not want to buy iOS devices in the future. But so does not providing updates, and so does letting people choose to downgrade to older versions and complain about new features not working on their device.

You win as well. Because some people don't notice an issue, there is no issue for those who's devices are pretty much unusable.

Congrats again, you win.

Much appreciated, but I think you're the winner here. A slow device is not necessarily an unusable device, and you insist on implying that any device that was made slower by an update is unusable.

Kudos, and a gold medal to you.

Anyone running 8.1.1? Is it ok?

I am running it on an iPod touch, and first impressions are that is it "ok".
It might be a hair faster, but still a steaming heap of ..

Still slow and buggy, and not a patch on 7.1...if you are still using that (or 6.whatever) then I recommend staying on it.

My feeling was that as I was on 8.1..how much worse could it get?
Also downloading it onto my iPad mini (1st gen) now.
