There are going to be a lot of disappointed people when revision 2 shows up judging by people's expectations in this thread. ;)

I predict we'll see an update at this time next year, and it will include a slight reduction in the weight, same form factor, a 5mp front facing camera, 512mb of ram, and possibly a USB port or an HDMI out.

Plastic cover where antenna is.

What I want to see in iPad Mk II

FireWire 800
Camera (3MP min)
Microphone
Flash player app

Combined internet suite: don't want to have to keep loading a different app each time I switch from SKYPE, AIM, or Twitter.

FW isn't going to happen. Neither is Flash support. It already has a mic. So the only thing on your list is a camera. Dl you want front or rear facing? What is your planned use for it? I can see a usage case for both, just curious what you are thinking about.

Personally, I figure we'll see a slightly faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, a 128gb model added, 3G across the board, and possibly a front and rear facing camera (front facing use the iPod nano camera unit, the rear the 3GS unit). Dock connector to support HMDI with AC3 passthrough, no new ports added. Price points keeping the entry model at the $500 mark.

128gb
512mb RAM
Wireless sync, printing
File storage

I don't believe that's unreasonable, the 1st gen is as much use as mudflaps on a tortoise.

Buy an ipad now or wait for the 2nd or 3rd gen?

I was wondering if the ipad will be like the iphone. should i wait and get one a year or 2 from now with some sort of factory enhancements or what???

The iPad is already unlike the iPhone. Nobody knows what its update cycle is going to be, so your question is pretty meaningless. If you want (or somehow "need") an iPad now, might as well buy one.

let me clarify what i meant when i said like the iphone. i meant will the second or 3rd generation ipad be different from the 1st gen like the iphone 1st gen is different from the 2nd and 3rd.

This question is asked about every product since Ogg made the first stone axe.

Should I get the XXX or wait for XXX V2.0 ?????

If you have a 'need' now, actually want the product, and can afford it. Buy it. Period effin dot.

If you have any qualms, either for it's use or if you want to eat baloney for two months...DON'T BUY IT.

No one knows what rev 2.0, 3.0, or 79.4 is going to bring. Heck, knowing apple they will invent the iBrain for iDiots next year...implants into your spine.

"Usual" periodicity for a given product is 12-18 months. However, the XBOX has been out in it's current form for what? 6 years? It's based on 2003 technology and it's still kicking butt. So YMMV.

This is not a snarky post...but no one can tell you what to do with your money. No one can (realistically) even guess when or what the new revision will have. So it's an exercise in mental masturbation.

I will say I freakin' love mine.

Edited for added commentary....
I also waited a few months to get my iPhone 2g. When the 3g came out I saw no reason to upgrade.

What makes you think anyone in the forum knows the answer? If you are looking for an excuse not to buy the iPad now, there are plenty out there. Thinking of features on the next generation, when the current version is released less than a week, is not a good one.

IMHO, if you don't find a need to have one right now, then wait it out. While it's not guaranteed, Apple's 2.0 revisions are usually much improved over the original. I think it's pretty much guaranteed that the next iPad will have a camera, and I'm sure there will be plenty of improvements beyond that.

I know the answer.

Next year's model will offer more memory at the same price points.
If they still offer a 16gb model it will sell for $399.
You'll have your choice of 8 or 16 anodized colors, and engraving on the back.

Finally, the answer to your question is: What. :D

The differences on the iPhone so far were the 2G and 3G internet connection, that anyway people knew about when the first one was released. So at the time you could have wait for an eventual 3G phone. The 3GS has mostly a better hardware.

If you talking about the OS, that is "irrelevant" 'cause you may upgrade it later.

And if you want a console comparison:

Should I buy a Playstation? Or maybe a PS2 or PS3?

If you can have it and want it, buy one now and enjoy it. A 2nd gen iPad will be release in a year time or a year and half time, and think of a 3rd gen is brainache, is just a waste of time sit there and wondering. ;)

Seems as good a time as any to repost this ;)

When it comes to apple products I'm usually not worried about buying first ten products because apple product resale value usually is very good and because of the product cycle there is usually a new version announced before the warranty expires so my resale value is good I would buy the first gen and see how u like it because I doubt the second gen will be drastically different

If you wait for the latest and greatest, you'll be in perpetual waiting because the latest and greatest is always around the corner.

Seriously, I agree. Technology changes so rapidly that if you wait, you will always wait. That's why I've had all 3 models of iPhone. I sold them and bought a new one each time a new one came out. The same could be done with the iPad I suppose. As for laptops, I tend to keep those longer, 2-3yrs at least. :)

This thread did not live up to what I was hoping. Without commenting on the sensibility of starting a "Waiting for Rev B" thread I think it's an honest question to ask. When the iPhone came out, it was a revolutionary device but the real usability of it came a year later with the 3G came out as the speeds were significantly increased.

So I am also in the camp of wondering if there is a "2G to 3G" type leap that people expect for the iPad in future versions or is it just cosmetic-type stuff like adding a camera or SD card reader. I think it's a reasonable question to ask before plunking down ~$500+.

I'm not here to bitch or complain about the new version don't worry, I'm just going to wait for the second revision because I want certain things from the iPad. I won't buy one hoping software comes out for example as I'll be frustrated. Not buying this one will make me happier.

When I first heard about the iPhone I actually waited till the 3GS came out because it had the things I wanted from it

So who else is waiting for Rev B?

  • I'm interested in the possibility of a SD card slot.
  • iPad Camera. As much as people say there is no use for it, I envision little situations where I can.
  • The ability to update via USB3. It took over an 3 hours to update my iPhone when the last update came out and I had asked iTunes to down sample my mp3's.
  • More sophisticated software (from Apple or the 3rd party market) the ability to make photo books and publish them from the iPad. I don't want to just consume content, I want to make it.
  • A lot of books I want are not digital yet so I'm waiting for the content to catch up. I'm hoping that when the Rev B comes out, ebooks will have matured as well.

Has anybody else got similar thoughts and can resist temptation of the iPad for now?

You gonna Be waiting awhile.
