Life is too short, if you can afford it now and justify the purchase to yourself, go for it! Who knows what's gonna happen tomorrow, let alone next year???

Also taking the iPhone 3G/3GS as an example, the 3GS was released approx a year after the 3G...but many users didn't think it was a worthy upgrade so stuck with their 3G's.

Who knows what the iPad 2G is gonna be and whether it's worth upgrading to?

Just my opinion :)

For taking notes I recommend a proper keyboard. iPad on it's own is cool. iPad with a keyboard loses it's cool factor. Get a Macbook.
I don't mind using a touch screen keyboard, may take time to adjust, and with the ipad you can easily and quickly draw diagrams or symbols if you have a good app

I say buy it.

Your generation is going to be so financially and morally bankrupt by the time you all enter your mid 20's and realize how terrible of a shape we've left the world in, a $500 ipad will be the least of your worries with modern American civilization is crumbling around you.

Frankly, I'd get the ipad and enjoy the hell out of it! It's not like you'll ever have the chance to own property or retire in the future. I wonder how much food an ipad will trade for when America is a dusty, "Mad Max" apocalypse.

And no, none of the above is meant to be a joke.

In December, 2012 when the world ends, and technology fails us, he'll be able to sharpen the edges of his iPad and make a formidable weapon to fend off the post-apocalypse radioactive mutant zombies. Or perhaps use it to hack skynet and save mankind.

(I'm married to a Sci Fi author, so these thoughts come unbidden into my head...)

Just buy one, and while you're at it go all out and buy the 64GB. The fact is, waiting a year is a long time. And even if Apple lowered the 64GB to $500 next year (unlikely), the $200 difference in cost spread out over a year comes in at less than $20 a month. In exchange you're getting the ability to use the device now. I don't think the minimal savings are worth it if you're planning to buy it eventually anyway. And if you go for the 64GB, you won't feel restrained and will be able to resist the urge to upgrade.

Next generation iPad, plastic?

Since there have been complaints of poor wi-fi connectivity on iPad, do you think it is likely that Apple will move to plastic on iPad? Much like the iPhone whic started out metal and changed to plastic with the release of the iPhone 3G.

That's the not issue with the wifi problems. It's not a lack of poor signal quality, its the fact that the signal just cuts randomly. For somepeople, they lose their WPA settings.

Aluminum is the best compromise of strength and weight and cost. Carbon fiber? Yeah maybe on the iPad pro.

I'm sure it can be fixed by a software update. The MacBook Pro's and iMac's are all aluminium and they have no problem.

I'd be really happy that I got a 1st gen if that happened... I always liked the 1st gen iPhone better than the 3G. Aluminum ftw

i feel the same way. i love the look and feel of the aluminum. fortunately i have no wifi issues, mine works wonderfully!

Maybe they'll do something like the 2007 iMacs? Aluminum border but have the actual back piece be black plastic:

I only think they would do this though if it would provide a real improvement to wireless signals. They would probably much rather keep the aluminum unibody for rigidity.

if iPhone 4g is coming out soon?

The iPhone that is coming out is the 4th generation or 4G and not running on the 4G network (it will still be on the 3G network). Apple is partly to blame for this misunderstanding by naming the 2ed gen (2G) iPhone a 3G after the network. This causes people to incorecly call the original 1G iPhone a 2G.

In answer to the question I think the 2G (2nd gen) iPad and 5G (5th gen) iPhone will be 4G network. In other words next years releases.

Most likely the next iPhone will continue to be a 3G device. Only Sprint has rolled out 4G service (in limited markets) at this point. AT&T will not roll out 4G until at least 2011. Maybe then we will see an upgraded iPhpone and iPad capable of 4G speeds.

I suspect they will name the next iPhone something other than 4G (like iPhone HD) to avoid confusion between the device revision number and the type of cellular data service.

Hope this helps!!!

Sucks that it will probably go 4G next year

This summer! Well, kinda... If you get the Sprint EVO 4G phone and you tether it with your iPad and you live in one of the cities where Sprint already has 4G coverage. Though this is probably not what you meant.
