Everything will come to an end, that means that advancement of technology will eventually reverse.

I think I'll buy it then.

I am in no way crazy about grammar, but I do find it ironic that you incorrectly use the word "feet" instead of "foot" twice in your sig.

Would someone explain what you would even do with a camera on an iPad?

I imagine the second gen will come out next year.

I don't get the desire for a camera. This would be one of the most inconvenient things to take pictures with. I'm not saying it would be a bad thing, but it's not like it would, dare I say, revolutionize the iPad.

I saw your avatar on my iPad and it scared the **** out of me

Lol I almost kicked my dog out for having fleas.

On topic, I don't think it was all that surprising the iPad doesn't have a camera. We all know Apple is going to refresh the iPad soon enough, IMHO the same time next year, which is when they'll probably put one in. Therefore creating an extra want for consumers and enticing some of those who have bought 1st gen iPads to buy the new one.

If people would just realize that everything Apple does is to do with marketing and future sales revenue then they would soon stop being so "disappointed" in features being omitted.

Fair call. I would say it aloud correctly, but type it out wrong. Besides, I live in Australia. I'll change it now :)

EDIT: see?

EDIT for staying OT:
Has anyone else restricted their thirst for the iPad in order to get a camera?

You mean the opportunity cost of getting an iPad is the camera?

Yes, I bought the 1st gen while fully aware that the 2nd gen will come out and have a camera and features that are missing from the 1st gen. I have been aware of Apple's pattern since the 3rd or 4th iPod came out way way long ago. I am quite aware of how the hardware cycle works, but I choose to buy the product anyway.

Why? Because I need an iPad now for work, and because a camera isn't something I absolutely need, so I can't wait a year. If you can wait a year, then great, do it, if not, then don't. Nobody really cares either way, since they will also buy it (or won't buy it) based on their own decisions as well.

Psst.... Video conferencing.

Yes, it's only use. Also, how the hell would it work? Which side on the front do they put the camera? I thought the iPad was supposed to work in any orientation. Okay so then they have to make an auto-flip orientation thing for video recording as well, similar to the iPhone but done live. Oh right that kind of thing needs testing, and it isn't likely to be 100% comfortable no matter what anyway due to the way most people use the iPad (in their lap).

All of these things are the reasons why there is no camera on the 1st gen. I don't doubt it will happen with the 2nd gen, but don't expect it to be an amazing feature, especially considering everyone will already have it on their iPhone 4Gs.

1. You can't restrict thirst. Either you're thirsty or you're not.
2. You can only remain thirsty for so long. A few days or so depending. Ignoring thirst for 12+ months is not recommended.
3. As stated here,

I could see a front facing camera being cool, but do we really need yet another device that takes non-chat pictures? My phone has a camera. My MacBook has a camera. Nanos have cameras. My 3 cameras all have cameras.

I can't think of anything more ridiculous than seeing someone running around a park with a 10" slab of aluminum taking crappy snapshots, then trying desperately to see the picture on the glossy screen outdoors, probably by putting it under their shirt. They will either get mugged or just punched; probably both.

Come on mate. I live in Australia too and I know the grammar problem between feet and foot. What a cop out lol ;)

I bow down to your clearly superior intellect. Surely living in a completely metric society means that you learn all the nuances associated with a word that you rarely use. Like I said, the distinction is made naturally in speech form for me, but I don't know the difference as a learned/mental rule.

It's like reading an ESL textbook, the content and rules of English are confusing to even native english speakers.

That serious stuff aside, I do in fact study a field of engineering that still requires students to work in both systems. So, maybe it is a cop out :p

Just a thought about the 2nd gen iPad... I really don't see it coming until 2011, and probably somewhere around March / April at that. Why? Well...

1) Apple is ramping production at the moment for the 1st gen and needs to get it into stores worldwide in decent quantities as quickly as it can. That's going to take time and it makes NO sense to launch in some later markets with the 1st gen product then launch the new one a month or two after that.

2) We already know that OS 4 is due sometime in the Fall. As that's a major functional improvement to the device it's the perfect trigger to kick off Christmas sales. It'll also be at a point where enough time has passed to let word of mouth (and hands on tests) convert a LOT of potential users in the same way the iPhone didn't really take off with the masses until they had a chance to try one for themselves. Both of those points mean Apple won't need the boost from a new hardware revision.

3) The limitations of technology will play a role here too. The 2nd gen iPad will, ideally, have a new revision of the processor and improved storage capacities to provide a tangible reason for upgrades and to attract new customers at reduced price points for a given capacity. That takes time to develop and while memory prices may allow this before Christmas I can't believe Apple would have the A5 (or whatever) ready to go in large enough quantities by then. If they wait until early next year to launch the new one they may be able to do significant changes like increasing the RAM and going with a dual-core processor without killing their profit margin or increasing prices.

4) Feedback is key here. Apple know this is a new product and it'll be crucial to find out how people use it in the real world, what they like and what they don't so that they can adjust the product as required for the second gen. Even if they started that process with feedback from the US launch it'd be pushing things (to put it mildly) to have a new product ready based on that feedback in six months.

5) This is the big one for me: Product Positioning. Look at Apple's calendar right now and you get some very obvious dates. iPhone has the summer sewn up right now with a launch in June / July and probably July / August set aside from heavy promotion. The iPod range has September as its launch window with promotion up to Christmas. Laptops and desktops are a bit more flexible as its reliant on other people providing hardware for upgrades but the stuff that's targeted at home users is ideally updated before Christmas as well. January tends to be a window to launch new products (and no-one's got money left after Christmas so no harm in pre-announcing if necessary) with March / April being the introduction of the next iPhone OS to give devs time to prepare for a Summer launch.

That leaves a very obvious gap for the iPad to slide into somewhere between February and April. They could choose to launch it alongside the new iPhone OS but that might get confusing so let's say they go with a March iPad reveal for the initial sales bump, then an extra push from the web-reading geek with the new OS reveal in April and a further bump when it actually gets released in the Summer (bet your bottom dollar the delay we see now between iPhone and iPad releases goes away ASAP). Apple can then focus on marketing the iPad without too many other distractions and it gives them time to check out the competition at CES just in case someone leapfrogs them and plans have to be changed. It also allows the iPad to act as a pointer to the hardware changes for the iPhone in some ways as I'd expect the two to share common internals, albeit maybe at different clock speeds, before too much longer.

Sorry for that being such a long post, just wanted to lay out some logic behind my thinking and got a wee bit carried away.

I strongly believe that the next iPad update will be in the Fall when they release OS 4. After watching the keynote - you can almost hear it in Steve Jobs' voice that something is up when he mentions the delayed iPad update - he definitely has a suspicious smirk... haha.

Whether this will be a price drop, a minimal hardware update (such as a camera), or new iPad specific features of OS 4 - I don't know. But I don't believe that they will release OS 4 for iPad without a cherry on top - it doesn't make sense and is not consistent with Apple's history regarding major iPhone OS updates.

With that said - I still think that owning an iPad for the sixth months preceding this announcement will be well worth it - which is why I'm going to be waiting in line come this Friday for the 3G.

What?! Only 128 rainbows? It should have at least 256 and have virtual rainbows enabled. What a piece of crap.

I'm buying an HP Slate.

MOAR RAINBOWS PLZ.

The iPad will be updated on a yearly cycle. Sorry to burst your guys's bubbles. The iPad 1st gen will still be selling like hotcakes in the fall. At most, you'll see a price reduction so that it is THE GIFT for christmas.

And don't forget:
6) A new version every 6 months, are you insane?!?

If it's a significant enough upgrade for me to want one, I just hope they're out before April so that I can let the buyer of my used one decide whether to pay for AppleCare.

Video Chat would be nice to see on the iPad, though if you holding the iPad it's going to be a bit shaky.

I use Video Chat on my MacBook Pro a bit so having it on the iPad would be nice.

I love my 1st Generation iPad, when the 2nd Generation is released then I will eBay that one and buy the new version, then when the 3rd Generation is released, well you get the picture. Isn't eBay great, if you sell to non scammers of course?

I thought about this briefly, but I went ahead and pre-ordered the 64 3G. I came to think about what the 2nd Gen might offer, and I can't think of anything that would make me regret the purchase. The 2nd Gen might be faster, or have more memory...maybe even a camera. However, none of those things would be a huge benefit to me or make me regret the purchase. My advice would be to get it now. Sure, there have been some minor issues, but Apple always puts out a decent product even if its the first release - unlike the PC world where that can not always be the case. Just my 2¢ :)
