OK, that second picture is pretty obvious. But, here's the thing about this issue: unless you're comparing the two iPads side by side, you would probably not notice it. So to me that's a complete non-issue. What IS an issue is if there are uneven tints on the screen that you can notice even if you're not comparing side by side with another iPad.

This is a good point. If under normal viewing conditions you notice something that bugs you, return it.

Some are apparently experiencing a yellow tint in the lower half of the display

Screen looks excellent so far for me. No shadow bar on the left side. Can't comment on "color gamut" as I'm not insane.

I noticed the washed out color without comparing it. It can be very obvious to some. It's a great device but that screen should be much better looking.

Not a scientific test obviously, but another data point. Second pic is full brightness without the control center dimming the background. Take it FWIW, I personally don't find it to be that big of a deal but there is definitely a difference.

The difference that is bothering me on my mini is the same thing I see on yours. Look at the date...it's fuzzy sort of on the mini and sharp on the air.

To me it looks like the Mini is better in some ways because the colours are less harsh on my eyes, although that could be the effect of looking at it through a computer screen.

I have a feeling the screen in the Mini is probably a case of "this is as good as it gets" for a screen that small and such a high density.

It's known that they are having trouble even PRODUCING functioning displays at this size/resolution. Maybe gamut just isn't there yet. The Air obviously has a several year lead in terms of display engineering.

It has nothing to do with screen size.

Colour saturation is all about the display manufacturer.

Seeing the two in person with naked eye vs a picture of it my observation is the mini is very dull non vibrant just plain blah! I've owned every iPad released (kept old mini only a week). Really wanted to love rmini because I'm using it for home control of my theater, cameras, and Lutron radio ra2 lighting system!

To be honest it shouldn't/won't be a big deal for most folks, including myself. I still find my Air to be much crisper and better to look at, but that probably has a lot to do with the luck of the display manufacturer lottery and bigger screen size rather than some cost cutting measure by Apple. The color gamut or lack thereof has not made the Mini unusable or even annoying by any means

Yup - I have noticed this - but to be fair, my old Mini was just as washed out. I'd hoped that the Mini R would be along the lines of the vibrant screen on my Air but nope. And with full brightness on both - and varying levels in between.

The rMini is definitely sharper. When i was looking at it earlier I was comparing with my iBooks app. The colors definitely looked washed out on the rMini when when comparing the home screens.

The colors on the new iPad mini are definitely less saturated and compared with my iPad 3, the color profile is a little bit blueish.

Interestingly, the saturation is closer to what I see on my calibrated computer monitor when I compare the iOS icons on the Apple website with the retina mini (you have to scroll down a bit): http://www.apple.com/ios/what-is/

I rather like my iPad rMini's display. For those complaining about it being washed out...is this something Apple could update (color profile) in the software?

Just a few things to think about. I do see what you are talking about.

Maybe when Apple does the next software update it will get color more align.
I have seen not only my iPads and iPhone look clear sometimes after updates I notice it on my Mac and Macbook.
These can be two different types of screens (technology build) they will never looks exactly the same. Also I found by reseting all settings helps with small things that may or may not look to operate right included battery life.
The slight yellowish tint at bottom of screen will go away. When I first Booted up the rMini it had a slight yellowish tint at bottom I then increased my display brightness to full and on a all white screen for 10 to 15 mins and it started to fade. I barley notice it. This is the same thing from years past. Give a it a little time most retailer including Apple is giving returns extra longer time due to the Holidays.

Obviously....right now there are only so many manufacturers that can produce this type of LCD unit. That is the whole reason for the constrained supplies. I believe Apple is trying to ramp up other suppliers to producing an LCD this dense, but it is taking time.

I guess I'm the odd one. I thought the color on my original mini looked much better then the air. The air just looked over saturated to me. I'm one that turns down the color settings on my TVs to get a more natural look. So if the miniR looks like my original mini I will like the screen!

Wow

A lot of people are very specific about what they want. Others just turn it on and go

A rather wide swing on usage here. It's actually confusing and I'm now going to have to refrain from saying OCD and calling people completely freaking crackers, even though this pains me greatly :)
